The only thing to fight is Ghasts, And they dont drop anything.
Theres no blaze men spawners and zombie pig men drop pork chops.
The only reason one would possibly want to go there is to get Glowstone... Or easy lava buckets.
It just seems like a lot of work for 0 pay out imo.
Sounds like you knew the answer to your question already lol, Glowstone, Souldsand & Netherrack are the only point at the moment, but as we all know... Nether is needed for Potions/Fortress etc once its added
Unless it's different on the PC, the dude explaining his nether transportation is wrong. There is a ratio to the Nether/Overworld. It's 8:1. So, if you build a portal, go into the nether and build another portal next to it (moving forward or backwards) you'll have traveled 8 blocks in the overworld. You will not come out of every portal at the original one you've crafted... again, unless it's differing from the PC version.
I go to the nether for things already stated. Netherrack for fireplaces, glowstone for ceiling lights, and soulsand for a different type of building block. I think it looks awesome when combined with sandstone. Eventually, you'll be able to make a blaze XP farm and build your enchantment table there. It makes for easy level 50 enchantments.
Soul mud - One way doors and minecart only doors
Glowstone - Small biomes on the 360 means that not everyone will find pumpkins in the wild. Glowstone is the only other option for underwater lighting.
Netherrack - Fireplaces, lighthouses or any other build that needs fire, needs Netherrack

Why are you even asking us to explain a reason to go to the nether when you already outruled all the reasons.
It's stupid and pointless topics like this that waste space and lessen the chances of a good topic being seen on the front page.
its what these forums are for... asking questions and discussing the game, if you want to bury your head in the sand then don't go on the forums of a game.i use nether rock because it stays on fire a long time, i use it in the bottom of my animal spawners so when the pis spawn they fall onto flaming nether rock and i get an unlimited supply of cooked pork without any work or hastle.

Well, there you go. Those are pretty good reasons. I think going to the Nether is more of a milestone, something you can say you did, at least on the Xbox. On the PC, it's more for the potion stuff now.

The following statement is true. The previous statement is false.
Going for cooked pork chops, Netherrack, and Glowstone is a good reason if you need them. The teleporter idea and easy lava buckets are some of the most helpful uses for going there.

Xbox is not 8:1. I think it's 3:1.
And go try it - I use my portals to teleport exactly the way I described. If it doesn't work that way for you, I'd love to hear about it.
Glowstone - Excellent underwater light if you just wanna brighten up a lake or whatever.
Soul sand - Slows down mobs, could be used as protection for your home if done well.
Netherrack burns forever, can be used for many things if you're creative.
Cooked pork chops - Easy farming for foods
(plus, playing tennis with ghasts is kinda fun lol)
Why does it have to have a purpose? I thought the whole point of minecraft is that you didn't have to do anything. No story to weigh it down, just get out there and build, explore, or what ever.
If you need direction.
-Fight ghasts for fun
-make a base
-harvest lava, glowstone, soulsand, netherrack. mushrooms.
- cover great distances quickly
-explore with your friends

How do the portals work on the PC? Please see this page: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Nether_Portal
