I made a farm. It seems you can place the mushrooms anywhere. All you need is one mushroom for it to start mulitplying.
As for where to put them I just scattered them around my house. Although I plan on makeing a second basement for them. My first is for my sugar cane farm.
Not sure about future versions , but for right now they spread in any environment lighted or not. This is good because it gives you a pretty much endless supply of mushroom soups.
