Is there a limit on how high one can place lava? I'm trying to make a lighthouse (redstone blocks aren't available), but after ground level, I cannot place lava. Anyone else having this issue?
Still a credit to your ruse, what a beautiful excuse, To never open up your eyes and see the things you lose,
Just climb the beanstalk when you die and meet the giant in the sky.
I think lit netherack reaches even further. I can literally see my tower from half the map away
I may use that after an update that fixes trips to the nether. (My console freezes every time I try to go, and I have seen others having the same problem)
I had the same problem. I created a new world, marked my spawn point (I had "moved" my original spawn point with a bed in my other game, still close to the original point.)
Tried to place a bucket of water at my spawn point- it disappeared.
Moved 10 blocks away- water disappeared.
Moved 20 blocks away- water placed normally! (And I suppose lava will work the same way).
(BTW, there really is a water/lava placement bug- in my original world I couldn't place any water even when I was over 40 blocks away.)
So, two questions:
1- Just how big is the "set area of your world spawn"? What's the radius in blocks? I don't think they've ever said "officially". Does that include vertical blocks? (I actually spawned in my new world about 10 blocks up in a tree). I'm guessing it isn't. You have to be a certain distance away horizontally. Otherwise you could place lava 50 blocks up in the air right above your spawn point, but it would flow down and still cover the spawn point- not good.
2- So far we've only been taking about your original spawn point- what about any new spawn points you make when you sleep in a bed? Does the placement limitation then apply to that one too? Does that free up your original point when you make a new one... or not? (Can you have only one area you can't place water/lava, or can you have several places where you can't place any?)
I know I'd like those questions answered before I start planning and digging out my mob grinder.

1. can't say, i'd assume about 20 blocks if thats when you could place normally
2. beds do NOT effect this spawn area, i have seen lava placed on a building with used beds in it

1- I didn't measure how many blocks away the ban lifted. I do have an automatic wheat farm next to my spawn though so I'm guessing no more than 20. I think it only counts horizontally because I was about 50 blocks above my spawn and it still didn't work.
2- It only counts for ORIGINAL spawn points (the one the compass always points to). Any other spawns made by beds are free game.

Oooooh, that's bad news.
You make a new spawn point with a bed.
You wipe out your new point with lava (or blow it up, whatever).
Now when you die, since the new one is gone, you spawn at your original one, even if it's clear across the map?
Hummmm....
edit: ah, found it
Just climb the beanstalk when you die and meet the giant in the sky.
That must be it because I made a house where I spawned and the lighthouse is above it.
And yes, it also appears and quickly disappears.
I would, but lava lighting reaches further.

Yep. Happened to me on PC before
