So, having had nearly a week to chew my way through MC360, I thought, hey, why not review it? I'll just break this down easy like, nice and simple.
So.
Pro:
It's Minecraft. On your 360! Yes, that's actually a plus, because lazy folk like myself who don't feel like hunching over their desk's can finally slouch about on their couches and be comfy
It runs smooth. Real smooth. We're talking "Greased feet across a buttered floor" smooth. So far, I haven't run into a single framrate dip in single player, and while the blocks pop in on occasion, well, that happens on the PC. Multiplayer is a case by case basis, sometimes the host lags, sometimes the players lag, either way, it's more of a connection problem than game problem.
Local MP. Yep. It's fun to bring your friends over (Or cart your 360 off to their homes) and go wild. Especially if they're dastardly folk that plant traps in your home. Sets off a nice arms race. But that's just personal experience, 4 player co-op, it's awesome.
Older version of Minecraft. I'm going to toss this on my cons list as well, just for fairness. I enjoy that it's around Beta 1.6.6, it's nostalgic, it's simpler, it's hard to describe. It's like playing the previous game in a series and enjoying the classic gameplay before the sequel updated it and added new features.
Cons:
It's buggy. Real buggy. Thankfully, I've only the occasional problem, like a crash on exit, or when transitioning to the Nether. Other people have had it worse, and I really hope 4J patches it in their next update.
HDTV required Co-op. Yeah, I know I'm on the side of "Upgrade, you're behind the times", but this is apparetly a pretty hot button issue. Just tossing it on here as a con, because...yeah.
Older version of Minecraft. While I'm enjoying the nostalgia, I know it'll wear off quickly and I'll look back to my PC tower slowly gathering dust and sigh. While the older version is fun, it'll eventually pale in comparison to the PC edition, with all it's flashy new features, items, game mechanics. Stuff like that.
Lack of texture packs/skins. I know, this is a deal breaker to some. Not really for me. But coming off using a custom Painterly pack, it's a little hard to adjust to the classic style. I hope 4j releases texture/skin packs as free DLC in the future, just because, it's nice to have fanmade touch ups to make Minecraft look the way you want.
I'm not going to touch Mod support since, unlike Texture/skin packs, they change how the game is played in minor to major ways.
Small worlds. I know, 1k x 1k is enough for some people, but I play Minecraft to explore just as much as to build. I miss that feeling of a huge world, all set for you to explore, explore delve for resources required, and build in. That's another thing I hope 4j works on, increasing the map size.
All in all,
MC360 is a really good port. While it lived up to 95% of what it was made out to be, it's not without it's flaws, but with 4j promising to update it to PC standards, I have high hopes for the future of the game. 9/10
