I am trying to get grass to spread to a castle on a sandy beach and I noticed that grass doesn't seem to spread diagonally. I am used to Pocket Edition where grass can spread to pretty much any block touching it.
So how exactly does grass spread in this version?
It has to have enough light though. And for the best results you might wanna make a 2x2 or 3x3 trail of dirt to where you want your grass to go. And don't make it go up more then one block at a time.

I'm usually not trying to be rude. So if a post comes across that way then sorry :]

This is correct, and I'm sure it is true for the PC version as well. It seems weird how the PE would be different.

Dirt just needs sunlight it dont need to be under grass or dirt for it to grow. Atleast from what i just saw it only needs sunlight
It needs any light source(torch, sun, fire, glowstone, jack-o-lantern, or any others), an adjacent grass block(left, right, above, or below. Not sure if diagonal works but that's counted as two blocks away. So I don't think it does), and the adjacent grass block can only be one above or one below it. Anymore and it won't spread(that I know of. If grass will grow diagonally without spreading to adjacent blocks then it probably will spread up or down two blocks).

Torches work for the lighting
Bonemeal can be used on grass to make flowers and tall grass grow. It doesn't actually make a dirt block into a grass block.
