I'm having some trouble with Redstone circuits and I'm not really sure if this should be expected or not.
A basic circuit, like the oscillator made from two repeaters and one torch, will randomly appear to burn out. Busting/replacing the torch will restore the operation but it's really inconvenient when I'm using circuits like this for rail carts and stuff. My redstone circuits will just kind of die with no explanation.
I am also having some trouble with the redstone dust "snapping" to weird directions and blocks with one or more redstone torches that will only light up dust on one specific face of the block.
Anyway, I have no idea if these were known issues in this version or if it should be expected. Bug or known inconvenience?
This is likely the cause of the XBOX version being 1.6.6
Among many inefficencies of redstone in that version, one of the most preminent one was that redstone would not snap to redstone repeaters, causing the players to have to take up additional space in their mechanics in order to have them functional. I am not very well experienced with redstone myself, so I cannot give an alternate schematic for your contraption's purpose, but I hope this clears up the problem you are experiencing. The redstone change came in 1.7 of the PC version, so it should be next for us. We don't know when "next" is sadly.

Actually we do. A 4J (or whatever the studio is called) guy has confirmed several times on the forums that the next update will be 1.7.3 (which is the one before 1.8)
I believe that if redstone torches change states they are susceptible to burning out.

Redstone torches will burn out when switched between the on and off states too often (8 or more off-on-cycles within 100 ticks or approximately 5 seconds)

that doesn't exactly cover the "when" aspect now does it?

Thanks. That's not quite the same as what I was asking - these circuits certainly don't fire 8 or more times within 5 seconds. I've even made versions with extra repeaters (16 with 8 per side on the 4th delay and one torch is the highest I've tried which is 6.4 seconds per cycle, right?) and they still stop working. Sometimes, they'll seem to stop "half-cycle" and it appears some of the redstone is charged while the torch is dead - but this usually only happens in multiplayer so I thought it was just a sync issue.
Try use this clock repeater, it seems to burn out on 1/2 ticks, but 3 & 4 ticks continue to work.
If that's the whole circuit... I don't think that would work once. When I try configurations like that, the repeater won't light up the redstone that is shown perpendicular to it and the torch will never go out. Additionally, adding redstone to the front or back of the torch block seems to always work but the sides don't always make circuits for me. Is that from the PC version?
A local buddy mentioned he thinks that the circuits may stop updating if they're far away from a player. He's having trouble getting an automatic rail working. That might be why I have failed or "half-lit" circuits - a lot of my circuits are pretty far away from where I usually dig and maybe they just don't update correctly after not being updated for a while.
I was able to do some more experimenting yesterday and I'm still having weird issues.
The configuration RobgersHabit posted just doesn't work for me. The torch stays "on" and the redstone lights up, but the repeater stays off and nothing ever cycles. If I use significantly more tiles to trail the redstone out I can eventually get it to work. As mentioned, it does burn out, but that's expected.
The trouble is the clock doesn't start when the game loads. It feels like the same problem you'd get if you had manually cranked a simple repeater clock, but in this case it occurs with fully functional 5-clock pulsers each and every time I leave and rejoin my own game, whether it is multiplayer or singleplayer.
I'm having the exact same issue, except I end up with circuits that are either all out or "half cycled" and stuck until you pop out wire or a torch and reset.
The buddy I mentioned previously that was having minecart issues.... he showed me something pretty weird. He had a track that was probably 32 tiles long with powered tracks at either end and 3 more along the middle. You could set a mining cart at one end and plant down a torch/hit a switch to send the cart on a trip back and forth like a pendulum.....
.... except if we left and rejoined, the cart would be completely stopped at some random location. If we went really far away by foot and teleported back (via Nether) we would return to the cart stopped or completely missing (?!).
Thanks for everyone's help, but I think I'm giving up on Redstone in the current 360 version with the exception of simple switches. :\
I wonder if these things not functioning actually count as bugs? I'm not familiar enough with the PC version to know if this is normal for 1.6.6 or whether these kind of problems can even be addressed with the way the game is coded on the 360. Perhaps Pistons will sort it all out, anyway!
That's pretty much my position on the whole thing at the moment. It's weird that they stop and minecarts sometimes disappear, etc, but I have no idea if this was normal for this version or not. That's why I made the thread.
Anyway, here's hoping it all works right in the next update. If not, I won't be too discouraged. I can do some work-arounds for the Survival related things I want to build. It makes more sense that if I plan to build something seriously complex (MineCraft counters, etc) to use the PC version.

Here's a link from the wiki of the circuit I mention that just kind of dies. Illustration A.

Excellent. I assumed the wire placement was the version of the Xbox, but I wasn't 100% sure. Sounds like it definitely is.
Now if I can get them to stop burning out randomly.....
