I got an extra controller hoping to play minecraft splitscreen. The problem is, I don't know how to turn it on. I hope this doesn't affect it either, do both account have to be LIVE?
You need the sync the new controller to the xbox, I could tell you how but its better if you read the manual that came with your system!
Seriously people need to read manuals No offence but 80% of problems are resolved by knowing basic system stuff.

Somewhere on the front of your Xbox is probably a little circle that makes the green ring flash after you press it(at least on the older ones. Never owned a slim one or whatever).
There is also a little circle on the top left of your Xbox controller. Right next to the slot that you can plug a charger for the controller. Press the circle on the console first. That will get the ring flashing or whatever on your console. Immediately after that hold the button on your controller and a couple seconds after that both should stop flashing and your controller should work :]
