Hosted or private server?
How many people are playing at the same time.
If it's a privae server, you may not have the up/down speeds to effectively host a server AND/OR you have two many people connected at one time.

I don't know. It's happen to me and my friends a lot of times
It's only the guy that host a server had no problem. May be it's because of internet connection too (I think)
If everyone in the game is having issues, then it's the host who has the internet issue I'd think. The host won't notice the lag since he's hosting, but it will cause the other players to have lag.

That was a fail in every aspect I can think of.
1. A private server can be defined with a whitelist.
2. A Private server means it's closed to all but a small community, I.E. it isn't open for public use, it's used or you and a group of three (or 'x' number of friends.
Have whoever is hosting the server check with the link I gave you, if he/she is not able to effectively host, check with someone else who plays. If none of you are capable, seek out a paid server.
Its insufficient upload/download speeds. It depends. If everyone in the server is having bad connection issues its the host with the insufficient internet but if its usually just you its probably your internet. If its everybody in the game, find someone with good solid internet, 15 mbps download can hold a good amount of people. Sorry if this has been said before, just didn't feel like reading all the earlier posts this time. Hope I helped in some way.

This is on XBOX. This is an XBOX Edition forum and every thing in here is all specifically about the XBOX 360 Edition of Minecraft. There are no whitelists, and there are no "paid servers". You can have 8 people in your game at once and the game is open to everybody on your friends list unless you don't choose an online game or you make it invite only in which only the people you invite can join the game. Hence no whitelist. There is not an option to only allow a certain list of gamertags in the server. Although that would be really cool. Sorry if you already knew all this but since you used pc slang a lot of people will get really confused. Just making this clear. Dont wanna start a fight.

This isn't in the 360 edition category for me... it's just in Survival... o.O
