Yes, every map ends in water. It would be kind of disheartening to walk to the edge of the world and see further land while not being able to go to it. I like the ocean, water edge idea better.
On xbox version every map will be one giant island basically and always have water borders only PC has "infinite" landscape
Actually, I do believe the PC version used to end in infinite water as well on 1.8. Now, when the world ends on PC, it's just fake non rendered ground.

I wonder if they did this so they could enlarge maps by just adding another 1024x1024 map. It would be an easy way to not make things look weird when moving between each "zone"
