It can be 4 dirt wide and then you need 1 water block next to it. make sure its out in the sun. Then use the tool and seed.

Always put a fence around it that animals can't jump over!!! They will eat your wheat. Greedy Bastards!!

putting fences underneath each dirt block will prevent walking and jumping from uprooting the crops

bonemeal to make them grow instantly

Here's a short video of how I do my Wheat farms...

I know it isn't the best, but it is compact and works well
