Thanks again. Counting out resources like this will make it a lot easier to know what I need for my upcoming rail project, but first to figure out how to a water elevator working for my cliff side lair.
No problem.

I can't figure out how to do the achievement get thing, so.... yeah
I will be the one dissenting opinion. Use some gold to make a few gold swords. gold takes the best enchantments. It is easy to get several good enchantments including the best "Looting 3". I use looting 3 swords on endermen to get extra pearls. then use the pearls for the end portal, enderchest or for teleporting.
I do use a lot of it for powered rails and stack gold blocks in my bank.
Use it for powered rails. I know you've been told this 10 times but heres why. There is an achievement to go 500m in a single direction by minecart without stopping. You're going to need about 10 stacks of iron and about 3/4 of a stack of gold. For every stack you place down of rail, put 1 powered rail and a redstone torch beside it. If you want to count out the rail you can put 80 normal rail and then a powered one because a powered rail will push your minecart 80 blocks. I just do it because going by stacks is much simpler and faster. Super easy. The hard part is finding the iron. You need so much it's ridiculous. Hope i helped
My friends and I found a new (for us anyway) use for gold fairly recently. We're making Golden apples out of it! We started a new world only to find that it was all winter biomes. Normally we'd just trash the seed and move on, but with the One version coming soon we figured we'd hang onto it and see how far we could get with the very sparse resources available in those biomes, then when the map expands go out and find a the biomes we're missing or a village to trade with like we normally do to get the items we want.
After a while we hit a wall, having collected and farmed every different available type of renewable resource. It looked like it was time to shelve the map just when we were really staring to enjoy it. That was when we began paying attention to the random zombie villagers that'd appear from time to time, despite the fact that there are no villages that spawn in winter biomes (Mojang & or 4J, please fix this - Igloo villages would be SICK!).
Turns out there's a 1 in 20 chance that any zombie that spawns, even from a spawner in a dungeon, will be a zombie villager! these zombie villagers can then be turned back into regular villagers by first hitting them with a potion of weakness, then hitting them with a golden apple! The process takes a few minutes, during which time the zombie villager can still attack and kill you, and will burn and die in daylight, so we made a zombie detox center with strong walls, a thick roof and a nice iron door so they can safely wait out the shakes until they're cured.
After that we built a new village for them to run, play, and breed in after being ushered out of the detox clinic. We have a functioning village now with new villagers being spawned all the time that we can trade with to get, i think, anything else that we would normally not have access to! So far this has become the greatest use for gold that we've come up with!
What I do with gold is get lots of levels, then I use all of the levels to super enchant the sword, but not the armor because it breaks too quick. The sword has a 0.01 chance of getting sharpness 5, while other swords have a 0.000000 chance of getting sharpness 5. a sharpness 5 golden sword is as good as a sharpness 3 diamond sword, and it definitely isn't that bad! If you are on a server that is survival and you are being hunted, I always have my sword, <<The Golden Arc>> to back me up, which I got lucky on to get sharpness 5, unbreaking 3, and fire aspect 2. It does 10.25 attack damage, 50 away from a sharpness 3 diamond sword! So yea, either that or powered rails or clock!
I realise the OP is an old post, but gold certainly isn't rare now, just build a gold farm in the overworld. I have one next to my house and I now have more gold than I can actually use. My main use for it is similar to others, powered rails and enchanted apples, gold carrots for making night vision potion, etc.
On servers, one could use gold nuggets as local currency, maybe possibly perhaps. Not only that, but if you are in one of the accursed "Ocean Biomes" (like myself), then Golden Apples can be used to create Villagers. And Golden Carrots are the only way to breed Horses and Donkeys. Gold is used to create Powered Rails, which are necessary for an Xbox achievement. Golden tools are dissapointing, they go fast and end fast (ok that sounds a little dirty). However, Golden items can be enchanted far easier that other tools, so if you have a Gold Farm, Golden Tools are indeed useful, somewhat, although Golden Pickaxes will always be rubbish despite it's flaunted speed. I didn't mention Gold's use in creating Beacons because Iron exists.

100% AGREE!
I also liked the idea of "Golden Arrows" (Maybe do a little bit more damage than regular arrows.)

True you have to go pretty deep down to find it in most cases, however, ive found it fairly abundant in every spot I've found it at.

make a bank with blocks of gold stored inside.
