Before I start I did play this at PAX East and I asked lots of questions. I found the review on the home page a bit shilly so I am writing one. To be clear, the guy demoing the game did say the game is not really for people that play it on PC. Let me repeat that. THE GAME IS NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO PLAY IT ON PC.
The Good:
The graphics look great. The lava is really awesome. It was notable. Within my first minute of playing it I met up with some wolves which I decided to battle. I killed one before going down.
The co-op on one xbox splits for 4 people. It worked well.
The controls worked well on the controller.
In Conclusion:
For a ported game, graphically, and being the 1.6 beta version, it is done well.
The Bad:
It is 1.6. And while they are not hiding it, 1.6 was a long time ago. It feels very stripped down. You cannot sprint. So it feels quite slow. There are a lot of options you don't have. And there are things that might drive you crazy. So you don't have a food bar. Okay, but you can't stack bread. You won't just not have some biomes, you also won't have the mountains or the high ceiling... All in all it stinks. 1.6 was almost a year ago.
The multiplayer isn't really a multiplayer. It is one person's world. I was quite concerned about this. Basically if you have a world you are building with your friends, it belongs to one person. This means that this person must be in the world in order for others to play. If that person signs out then everyone is booted. That person must be on. Otherwise you must host your own world. They have no plans to integrate it with servers for the PC version. They also have no plans to ever host their own server for worlds. This is a completely separate game from the PC version. The only way to get around the ownership issue is if someone decides to run an Xbox as a server. That is a pretty pricey thing to do.
Making items is slower. What I mean by this is that you click on the workbench and you can see all items you can make in the world. If you have the ingredients you place them on there and it shows through a slide menu what you can make. I see why they had to do it this way but I also see clicking on the wrong item as a potential problem. It is slower if you know the items you want. And it is a bit of a cheat in my opinion.
In Conclusion:
So when he said it was for people that do not play the PC version, he also said it was for people that have heard of the game and want to play it, but cannot run it on their computers. I am posting this because it may be $20 spent on a game you won't play. I thought I was going to get it but after playing it there I don't see me getting invested in it. It is just too old a version and doesn't have enough of what is available on PC to bring me to it. I also hate the fact I can't have a shared world, but a world I can just invite people into for an evening. I would not get invested in someone else's world since all would be lost if he or she decided to stop playing. And I think everyone else would have that attitude if I owned the world as well. It isn't like a typical Xbox video game where there is a completed end to it. Therefore, I think getting it with single player in mind is the only way to go. But being such an old version, I think I will stick to it on my laptop.
You're focusing mainly on the fact that its outdated, It'll get updated over the months and eventually catch up to the point where Xbox gets updates about a week after PC.
Basically if you have a world you are building with your friends, it belongs to one person. This means that this person must be in the world in order for others to play. If that person signs out then everyone is booted. That person must be on. Otherwise you must host your own world.
4J has gone too far...Cutting the map size by 1/10th I could deal with but why on earth did they have to do this?!!!!
Christ, I thought this game would be somewhat descent, I was even planning on buying this for my friend too but now there is really no incentive to do so.
Minecraft is a game all about creating massive structures that take hrs upon hrs of accumulating resources and placing blocks. So now that town that you and your friends spent a day building will be all for nothing if the host quits the game. Tell me 4J, what happens to the town we built when the host takes a vacation or runs out of xbox live gold for god knows how long, what then?
I was expecting at least some sort of save feature to allow anyone in game to save the map, but alas, we are presented a game about making worlds that does not even implement a feature where worlds can be shared, even halo 3 got this right....
Minecraft isn't a game where you jump on and build a new town every other day, it is a game about building in the long run and seeing your creations out to fruition after long periods of time.

They confirmed that you could save the world you are playing on, idiot.
Stop jumping to conclusions.
I'm mainly buying it because I have a few friends who don't have computers that can run the PC version, who want to play it. I probably wouldn't bother getting it if it wasn't for split-screen mode, where I can play with my friends and have fun building with them. Though the 1000x1000 map ordeal is a bit of a letdown. In fairness, that does give a million blocks to play with; but what if I want to go through a couple biomes to find one I really want? I'd have to traverse a majority of the map just for that.
All of you need to stop jumping to conclusions. 4J Studios confirmed on their twitter that within the first week of release they are going to start updating the game to the most recent PC version.
And IMO, I like the 1000x1000 maps. It is more realistic, because on Earth the resources are NOT infinite and have to run out sooner or later.

Yes I know that you can save the game, if you are host that is. If you aren't host than can't save so that means only the host can have a saved copy of the map and when he gets offline you can't play on the map till he starts up the server again. This is the whole point I'm trying to make here, and it completely defeats the purpose of building a town.

Also, the crafting is faster for me. You don't need to individually place each block into a crafting square. It was also created so people didn't have to pause, go on their PC, and go to the Wiki just to learn how to craft things.
I didn't just focus on the fact it is 1.6. I focused on how the game felt. And considering all the people going OMG I can't save and blah blah blah, it is obviously an issue. It is why I posted this. It is really a single player game. They are not going to integrate this and they are not going to have independent servers. This imo is important information. I asked the questions and I shared what I was told and what I thought trying it out.
And I know they are going to update it. But all the updates in the world will not fix the host problem.

I can see that. I got it so my brother and I could play together (meaning I really got it for him). I was reading somewhere that I could join regular servers, but I'm bummed about the conclusion I've arrived at. All in all, two fruits of the same labor, really. I can still enjoy both in some way.
My PC is pretty crap. I have to run short render distance and i only get about 18 fps, but its all I got and I'm happy with it. I was definitely going to get MCX360 to play with my friends who dont have it on PC, until i heard it was 1.6, now after hearing a bit more I dont think I will be buying it.
As said in an earlier post, it will be updated to catch up with the PC overtime, and I do believe they will also add some Xbox exclusive updates as well.

You don't, you can only join friend's games.
