I'm here to give my take on the Xbox version of Minecraft (I got an early copy, btw). I've played for several hours now, so I've gotten a good taste of it.
So, let's start with the good news: the controls. My concern a while back was that the controls would be sloppy and inaccurate. My concerns are gone now. The controls do work well for the most part. You will probably need to increase the sensitivity the first time you play though. Moving your items in your inventory is a breeze. Crafting is also very easy with the new system. Anyways to put it simply: the controls work.
Another good thing about the Xbox version is the online. Running an online server is very simple, and you do have the option of making it invite only. I haven't noticed too much lag, so for the most part playing on an online server is very smooth. I wish they would allow more players, but I guess they don't need to because of, well, I'll save it for later.
The leaderboard feature in the Xbox version is awesome as well! It's fun to compare your stats with the rest of the world. Achievements are cool as well, however, I feel like they should've been a little bit more challenging to get. That's probably one of my minor disappointments. It is cool how they reward you with avatar items and gamer pictures if you complete certain tasks.
Now, the bad part. The map size. It takes about 4-5 minutes to get from one side to another. You may think that's a good enough amount of space, and you are absolutely right. The world is big enough to house a few of your friends. It's not a small world. There are plenty of resources after all. However, the one thing that makes the map size seem horrible is in your head. The one thing I loved about Minecraft for PC was how the worlds seemed like they were almost infinite. You could never see it all. Just having that piece of information in your mind made it so much more of an adventure. Since you know the boundaries are so small in the Xbox version, you cannot have that seem effect in your head. Just the thought that the world your in is tiny sort of ruins the Minecraft experience. You don't feel like you're in a vast world, you feel like you're on a small island. That, at least for me, pretty much ruined the experience.
Obviously, I cannot tell you whether to buy it or not. It's an awesome game, as well as an awesome port. I truly hope that 4J decides to fix the biggest issue. Personally for me, I would've been more than happy to purchase it at $20. There is really only one thing keep the Xbox version from being good to great.
You have something like demonstration version, you don't have most features(I think) like big maps for example, 4j still have time to add this, or it is in full version all ready.

Are you saying that the map will be bigger? Sorry, it's map size. Been confirmed many times.
Can you turn off the controls display at the bottom of the screen (hud)?

There isn't an option to turn off the HUD or the help tips. However, from my experience they don't really get in the way. The help tips might be a little bit annoying and unnecessary for experienced players, however, you only see them once for each block you see. They'll go away quickly. It seems like they will be very helpful for newcomers.

I know on the surface, the world edge turns to ocean and then an invisible wall: what happens when you are digging underground towards the edge?
Are there still large caves?
What about the Nether? Same size as overworld? What happens when you build a second portal as far as you can get from the first?
Think my post is helpfull, hillarious or just plain likeable? Freaking hit the green UP arrow down there, or else.
You can't adventure on an island? I have seen many great adventure maps on islands, some smaller than 1000x1000 blocks.
