As it stands now the maps a '5 minutes' in legnth (1024x1024)
Rodger Carpenter stated that they had to sacrifise map size for FPS.
Do you agree?
Do you want bigger maps or higher FPS?
I voted for higher frame rate (rather than the only other choice) and I'll tell you why:
1) One of the reasons a lot of us are so excited about minecraft coming to xbox is because we don't have PC's that can handle the game properly. Lags like crazy, low frame rate, etc. How many times have we see the "Can't wait- now I'll be finally able to play it!" posts. All of a sudden "world size" seems to be the Big Thing To Panic About and you guys are talking like you will sacrifice anything to increase it. Duh! It's not like those here don't have the PC version to play if world size is that important to you.
2) What a bunch of self-centered jerks. Did you ever think that MCX360 wasn't made just for you? You're only looking at from your own little POV and not looking at the Big Picture. Maybe it was made and designed for the millions of brand new players who've never played it before! Maybe a super large world would perplex newbies, that they don't need one to enjoy MC? Have you completely forgotten that the main focus of the game (and what newbies will concentrate on) is surviving, creating, building, and mining- not exploration?
3) You guys are spoiled rotten. If you just have to have infinite world size, you've got the PC version! It's been said that the xbox's one will be the "map size". Get real- that's pretty big! (Yes, it is.) Last time I explored a map fully it not only had all the different kinds of biomes in it, it had several of each. The world on a map is usually like one big continent with maybe a few islands. If you go in any direction chances are pretty good you'll hit the ocean within your map size- a big ocean. There might as well be a wall. And what would you see if you crossed the ocean? Another continent just like the one you left. All the deserts are alike, all the forests alike, etc. You've seen one, you've seen them all. There's really nothing to new to explore anyway. You don't need more than the map size to build on, and all you're doing when you go exploring is looking at the terrain generation. But there's plenty of terrain to look at within a map.
4) Give 4J a break. This is just the first version- it's not like it's not gonna be upgraded! All that really mattered is that they get a properly working version to market that they can build off. Who says you won't have bigger worlds later?
OMG can people calm down about the map size! Im sure plenty of players dont care about it, if you want map size go play the pc since half the people complaining have the pc version! I do as well. But im not just buying it to buy it, im getting it for splitscreen and the fps.
And if people dont stop complaining the realease date might get put off......
Of course I know what FPS is- I'm not 10. I also know FPS isn't all that important. It's usually not "lag", it's skipping frames.
Anyway, found it on Twitter. (Why do I have to do all the work?) Thanks, Naelo.
Question: "Question, is the world size in Minecraft 360 essentially the same as PC? Do you basically cut off the world at the Far Lands?"
Roger's Answer (April 3rd): "Essentially yes but based on 1.6.6 in the initial release. We have made changes to world sizes they are not a big as PC, still big."
He also said that it will run 60 FPS, all the time, in HD. (see twitter link above)
...I admit you have some decent points mixed in with the abuse and guesswork but when you take away those things the only thing I can agree with is "One of the reasons a lot of us are so excited about minecraft coming to xbox is because we don't have PC's that can handle the game properly". I agree completely. I have to play with the graphics as cheap as the game allows (Tiny view, no shading, etc) and my framerate often falls to about 5fps (around 15 normally).
Nonetheless despite the fact that I agree with your primary point the others... fail to convince.
Your point regarding "what newbies will concentrate on" and how we are "self-centred jerks" is hypocritical. You just assume that for some reason what you prefer is what they will prefer. If you look at the results of the poll in fact you will see that the majority would prefer bigger maps.
Moving on to your next point, If your opinion is in the minority then how can you attack the majority claiming that they are the ones who are "spoiled rotten"? The game IS made for the majority. Players have a right to voice their opinions and the opinion that is most widely supported is the one the developers will take note of. You argue that if world size is so important we should play the pc version. To be frank that's probably what I'll end up doing. To me one of the best things about mincraft is exploration. Sure, if on the xbox version it was proclaimed that worlds would be near infinite but mining was to be removed along with caves and any underground exploration I would be pretty put off.
If however... let's say the fps they are aiming for is around 50 or 60, as is typical for xbox, but it were possible to reduce it to around 30 and increase the world size considerably then that would, for me, be ideal.
For me a compromise would be best. For me the game is more about exploration than it is about fps.
As for your last point... I hope so too. Let's end on that.
Well, if you want 30 fps and big map in SINGLE PLAYER, what about split screen? Many lags?
All of you guys are complaining about the world size when you don't even know how big it is yet in the full release. I played the game yesterday and I thought it was really good, world size was really big.
I could live with 30 FPS honestly, assuming they could make the world a bit bigger. But really, I'm not THAT bothered by the smaller world, I don't usually go out that far anyway. I tend to build a house near spawn, then build everything else near my house.
You gotta realize, you have the above ground stuff, as well as all the underground stuff.. and the nether to build in. I think I'll live.
I've seen the video of a guy moving from one end to another. It really does take only about 5 minutes and about 20-30 to reveal the entire map surface. After that, it appears to be endless ocean but I think there's invisible walls to block you from going out there.
It's not horrible but it does leave much to be desired. On the PC, I have explored far past a single map, especially when my world has a lot of water.
I think this was done because of splitscreen (makes sense and it was suggested in that Tweet). Since running 2 or 4 copies of MC on a single console is very technically taxing (hence why more modern games don't tend to have splitscreen), they may have made the maps small to help in that regard.
Splitscreen is a great idea but I don't think it justifies the map size at all. Perhaps they could add a future option at create-a-world: small map size (supports splitscreen) or big map size (doesn't support splitscreen).

Edit: my bad, read it wrong.
Thought you said that Roger said they would sacrifice fps.
If you don't like what you've got, restard for a new map or use a seed.
Mines asking the direction question. Plus the more topics the more notice 4J take. (Hopefully)
Atleast put it on minimum 5000x5000. I would be soooo happy.
We dont need 60fps. The human eye only needs a minimum of 30-40 fps for a smooth experience. PLEASE 4jStudios. MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!!!

I hate posts like this, where we have to ask.
Source, people!
Where and when did he state this? Do you have a link?

I can run it without lag, but I want back good ol' times! And not only, also just because i'm fan of minecraft
