I have to say im very dissopinted to read this thread as the team or Total miner are working on near infinte maps (I understand this is very hard to do on the 360 due to system limitations) but i thought Notch would of had his best boys on the case 1000x1000 is really small guys considering the cost of the game.
How ever i will still buy the game seeing i pirated it for the PC and i love it i also i have faith that eventully they will increase this because why would people pay 1600 for a game they could pirate the better version on the pc and get total miner on the xbox for 240
He's simply trying to point out the fact that theres another game that poses better value for money than what we are all so hyped about. You cant ignore the fact that an indie game of similar (almost exact) style is recieving infinate world.Yet the original cant even do the same.
The question should be asked. Why the hell cant it match an indie game that costs almost around 6 times the amount ?

Having an infinite world isn't the only factor here, I've played the trials and those games don't approach the quality of Minecraft in my opinion. Also, this version of Minecraft isn't the only thing we are getting, there are many great additions to the game from the PC version that will be added.
I believe your point is that Minecraft should cost the same as some cheap knock-offs, right?
I'm not familiar with all of the features that these other games have: do they have redstone circuitry? Will they have pistons? Do they have the same variety of mobs? Can you grow wheat? Breed mobs? Do they have Minecraft style water and lava physics?
again, all they have to do is to enable traveling from one island to another (afaik you can create as many worlds as you want). so only thing they have to do is to save inventory gamewide, not mapwide (+ add a direct traveling feature and an overwolrd grid map if they want). all problems solved. you just have a small loading time every ~5minutes (if youe xplore new maps) and that's it
Thats..... a very intriguing idea.... That might be do-able, you build a portal to travel to another world map...
I love how people are saying total miner is better .
Facepalm. Total miner is not better in any aspect.
Sure they are "going" to update it sometime , to infinite or near infinite worlds. But at the moment Total miners size is terrible, even if there are large caves , the land mass is just tiny.

I haven't played Total Miner for awhile, so I can't give an entirely accurate answer, but when I last played it, the game didn't have redstone, pistons, farming, or breeding. The game also only had one aggresive mob(a spider that has an ear shattering scream), and no non-aggresive mobs. As for water, and lava, I know they're in the game, but I don't think they have physics, but I could be wrong.
I've heard they're adding a duck and sheep as a non-aggresive mob in a future update, and a skeleton for a new aggresive mob, but that update has apparently been delayed for over 5 months, with no confirmed release date(this info is from a quick google search, so sorry if it's not accurate).

His point is that if an indie game, operating with a very small amount of people, is capable of bringing infinite maps to console, why can't Minecraft have them? They both generate "chunks" so in principle execute in a very similar manner. The world size limitation is not a hard limitation of the consoles, it is the lack of effort on the side of the developer. In this case, that is 4J Studios.
I started Minecraft in 1.6.6 and I know I didn't use that much landmass. I probably explored roughly that much land but I never went all too far from where I spawned. Even if there isn't a limit on the PC version, I naturally wanted to stay relatively close to my original spawnpoint. I can get wanting to explore a lot but Mojang is more concerned with performance. I'd rather have an enjoyable limited world than a giant laggy piece of crap. That's something that I'm expecting out of the 360 version because I don't own a good gaming computer. Well, that and a lot of nostalgia from when I first began
To the haters, relax, I think you're making things out to be a lot worse than they are. If you really can't stand a limited (Which is still pretty damn large in my opinion) world, then stick to the PC version.
What is the problem with 1024x1024 for eight players? That's 125,003 surface blocks for each person.
To be honest its big enough for now but I can see a problem when they update it for npc villages and strongholds. Infinite maps can be done numorous ways; i.e. the constant unloading and loading of chunks that gets updated to player changes based off the save but it has to be done smart or lag might become an issue. (nothing that a little player testing/trial and error couldnt solve) Im pretty sure this is what developers probably had in mind but since the code was in a different format (shockwave if im not mistaken) it probably didnt translate clean.
Total miner is able to do it because this is the only code they are working with so addapting it to suite any idea just takes time and not a new way of thinking. Mojang/4j has the pc basicaly running off one engine and xbox running off another (not exact but close enough) so what works for one may not work for another in the exact same way.

And my point is that there is more to the game than the size of the world. The Xbox has to generate the world, yes, but it also has to generate water physics throughout that world - something Total Miner does not do. It also has to maintain different mob AI's - which Total Miner does not do. Complex mechanisms with redstone - Total Miner does not do.
Minecraft is doing more with the memory, and that might be a big reason why the world has been limited.

This. Guess what Total Miner can do that Minecraft can't! Crash my Xbox... twice...... in two minutes. I deleted it instantly.
But how is height? Is that the same as the PC version?
I'll probably wait on buying this until they update it to the PC's version

No, they aren't. Just because they look similar doesn't mean that they are.
I doesn't matter, I'm done discussing it. 1000x1000 is plenty big for me, so I don't care what the knock-offs do.
