1. Get alot of wood
2. Build pickaxes,swords,axes,shovels, etc
3. Prepare for night (BUILD A HOUSE OUT OF WOOD)
4. Get wool, build a bed for night so you can wake in the morning to build some more or explore.
Or, you could just use the tutorial and hints that Minecraft Xbox Edition provides. That's kind of why they put them in the game.
Yeah, it seems really approachable to new players, tutorial level and help tips pop up when you look at things. I think you will be able to just buy it and play it and be just fine.
I suggest getting a LOT of cobblestone
Make a house of course' cobble
Make a wheat farm
When in the nether use
Cobblestone and ONLY cobblestone
Don't make minecarts' there a waste!
Don't dig straight down
Always carry wood with you*
make sure to always make trips back from the mines to your house
Never fight a creeper neer your house
Don't put lava close to wood, wool, chests, trees, or farms
Stay cautious of what is under you
Don't mine Iron with a wood pick
Don't mine redstone, diamond, gold, or Lapiz with a stone pick.
Don't hit zombie pigmen
But one thing I can highly suggest is early on, finding a decent amount of food. Whether you find a bunch of pigs and get a lot of porkchops, or make a wheat farm. Food isn't as important as it is in later versions, since the 360 lacks the hunger bar yet. But it wouldn't hurt to have food ready in your world anyway, for when it's updated to 1.8.
But I've seen a few let's plays of the 360 version already, and one thing I keep seeing them do, is waiting till last minute to get food. They'll wait till they're about to die before looking for food or making a farm. It's always good to have food before you need it.
My tip #1: play on peaceful for a bit while you get yourself situated with a home and weapons. It will be hard enough to get a grip on the basics of the program without those hostile mobs hassling you. You can always turn them on later (and "practice" on them).
My tip #2: think of your first world as a temp or learning world to get used to the game. Don't bother trying to build a big project. You'll make "mistakes" at first so do it in this world. When you're ready, start your "real" world. You'll be better off in the long run by starting a world off "right".

1 always watch your back. Creepers always come out of no where and blow up in your face!
2 Make sure you have a lot of wood on hand. You never know when you might need it. (Ex. When mining and your pick breaks) and also to have a few wood logs too. if you cook wood logs you can make Charcoal, the same as coal, if you cant find coal it self.
3 Have a shelter with an easy way to get in, because when running from mobs sometimes i miss the door a few times before i open it because i am rishing. So maybe an abvious placeing, so you can see it right away and make steps leading straight to it.
Those are just some basic tips that i always use on Single player, but i would suggest not placeing an obvious door in Multi-Player. that means other players (Greifers) will see where you are living and steal your stuff. I hope i helped just a little and have fun with your Minecraft experience!
Also, as has been mentioned. If you can't find any coal, cook logs/wood to make charcoal. It works exactly the same as coal.
I'm just re-mentioning it because it seems a lot of people don't realize you can do this right away. I didn't even know it for a while.
Put 1 log in as fuel, put 1 log in to cook. You'll get 1 piece of charcoal. Then put the 1 piece of charcoal in as fuel, and cook more logs, to get more. Then keep going until you have as much as you need. I usually do that instead of scrambling around trying to find coal right away, I just collect extra wood to cook.

You're right!
You deserve +1
