No. This is the very reason why there are 4 times more accounts than there are people who bought the game. You can create a skin without a premium account. (I think)
Well... I do hope too... Roger Carpenter said something about this but I don't remember what. It could be as simple as putting your gamertag in at the minecraft website and it just link your account to that gamertag.
As far as I know, they said they're going to TRY to add skins at a later time. I don't see why you'd be mad about using the default skin. If you're playing by yourself, you won't even see your skin. If you're playing split screen, you'll only see it occasionally when looking at someone else's screen. It doesn't effect the gameplay what so ever. Custom skins will probably be added later.
Repeated this elsewhere, but the new videos today already show people with different skins. So maybe it's already implemented? I'm guessing you'll have to link accounts or something similar.

It kinda sounds like he's implying that there is more then one default skin, because he says "Skins are pre-set"
Um...if you've seen ANY multiplayer videos of the game, you'd know that already. lol. There's 4 different default skins. Steve, Steve tennis player guy, Steve in a suit, and one I can't remember. I believe from what it looks like, first player is always steve, and the other players that join on split screen get chosen a random skin from whatever 3 are left.
Have you seen the trailer? The players in the trailer all use different skins.

Yes, the game comes with at least 8 skins - although I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few more but we don't have any offical conformation about that. Also if you will notice in the videos: when people join the game in split screen - they don't choose a skin. So either you choose a skin to use in the main menu beforehand, or you get one at random. In the end, it really doesn't matter that much; as TXF said, you don't really look at your own skin anyway. I would be just as happy with Steves with different colored shirts, red Steve, green Steve ect.
Its just a form of self expression and creativity. Minecraft is a creative game right?
edit: It's a creative element of the original and it would be nice to have the possiblity create skins.
True, well 4J has said that skins will be supported in the future, we will just have to see how. Perhaps they will release an XBL Arcade game that is a MC skin creator - you pay 400 points or so and can create skins to use.

On the Xbox Minecraft Wiki, It says "mods, texture packs and MORE skins will be available MUCH later"
Hopefully this doesnt mean more presets unless they are free.
