Did they have powered rails in 1.6.6? Maybe we can still do the glitch with a track+cart next to it to push it fast.
Also, no, it specifically says travel 500 blocks in one direction.
Yeah, just realized you're right. I did find this however to answer the original question:
Travel by minecart at least 1km from where you started
In Minecraft, 1 block = 1 meter. So it will take 1000 rails to travel 1 km.
It will take 375 pieces of iron to create enough rails to travel 1km.

I think it will take me about a good 6 hours to get them all, if I am lucky with ores
Difficult Achievements to get (in my opinion):
Leader of the Pack
When Pigs Fly
On a Rail
I would just wait for creative mode to be added for this one
Not including that rail one.
Me too. I plan on getting all of the achievements just by playing the game. The rail one will be something I'll do when I'm really bored.

It will take 188 iron ingots to get all the rail you need. So, it will take a good chuck of your time, but it's not super difficult.
I found out that if you hit the pig off a cliff while riding, you still get the achievement.
