DLC is downloadable content but what i think Minecraft for the xbox should have right? for example mods its basically an add on! and those add ons should be the very popular mods like aether airship clay soldiers millenaire those are great mods and should be mine crafts DLC
what I'm asking for is a lot but it probably will not happen but i might as well tell others my ideas. but think how cool that would be to get these packs and have fun it will be pretty cool to see!
I'm pretty sure by DLC they mean the updates for the game. They could also later mean texture packs and skins. I highly doubt mods will ever see the light of day on a console legitimately.
I do see Microsoft pushing for Mojang or 4J to make something specific for the XBLA version and then sell it for Microsoft points though.
DLC can be free it is setup by the company that puts out the game. Take for instance ace combat for xbox has some air plane skins that are free to download. Also I would rather have mods as free dlc rather then updates so i can choose the mods I want. I like the aether mod but clay soldier is not my cup of tea.
What I am worried about is if they charge for dlc that is essentially mods others created, since they will be making a profit off some one else's work that can not make a profit for themselves since selling mods is illegal (at least in the united states it is since it is seen as you are making money off of a game that is not your creation)
I've been saying this for a few days now to people saying that microsoft will not allow mods. DLC for a lot of games ARE mods, just official mods with a different name.
Consider what has to be done and the issues that could occur.
1- They would have to get permission from every mods creator. That may be difficult to do.
2- Exactly, they are official. Made by a huge company that has the go ahead of Microsoft.
3- The compatibility issues would be horrible on the Xbox 360.
4- Mods need to be updated after every Minecraft update. This would create significant difficulty with how slow Microsoft's update process is.
They have to look at all the potential issues and then choose if transferring the mods from Java to what ever C style langue they are programming with, is worth the effort. Something in me says Microsoft will not deem it worth the effort.
Will you support mods or peer-created stuff? The main focus is doing the updates. We're investigating bringing more Xbox stuff with every update as well. We're obviously aware of the crazy things people do in the Minecraft world, and we will look quite seriously at what we can do and what we can't do within the Xbox Live world. No promises, but it's not a "no" either. source http://www.oxm.co.uk...updates/?page=3 So if the leaked version of minecraft is not the full version it would be understandable to think that they kept hopes of adding mods. Most convenient way would be dlc. Also mods have to be updated with minecraft because minecraft does not update with these mods in mind they focus on the game and not what some one may or may not have downloaded. The most common update to mods is usually a item i.d. code update so the items dont conflict with minecraft when they add new items or change the item. with dlc they know what i.d.'s is in use and can update the game according so it wont conflict with the dlc it takes up time but not much to make a difference. how do you think other games do it. you think COD releases a map pack then never updates thier game? No, they simply work around it.
Edited Also mods are freeware you do not need permission to use them they would need permission to make a profit off them or use them in advertisement.
I'm well aware of the potential issues, but do you honestly think that 4J studios are not aware of the issues too? If they thought it was insurmountable then they would have said no to mods already, which they have not.
The bottom line is that if DLC comes out then it will only be a few distinct pieces (possibly bundles), with such a small amount, updating the mods will not be that difficult. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe arcade games are only allowed 4 lots of DLC? though that could just be 4 lots with achievements.
As for compatibility, the same issue is apparent for many games that currently exist and there are a variety of solutions. Peggle and Magic the Gathering for example use an allow if the host has the content. Battlefield 3 etc. use separate servers for those with and without DLC.
Finally I personally doubt whether it would be microsoft who decides if it is worth the effort, I think that would be 4J studios call and for now the devs have said they want to look into it.
I'm not talking about compatibility between players, I'm talking about the incompatibility between mods.
Microsoft owns 4J just in case you didn't know. And it all comes down to the fact that they said they will look at mods and nothing beyond that. No promises at all.

Well i guess we will find out in the coming days (figure of speech) what dlc they are planning and about mod support of lack there of.
I dont see it as far fetched as you do but it would be a stretch to add all mods but the big ones I wouldnt see it as difficult.
But if it's not mods makes you wonder what kind of dlc we could look foward to. hopefully an xbox exclusive items or skins/texture pack? dunno but at least something else to look forward to after minecraft release.

Theres going to be a subscription system made by clowns that will cost $50USD and you'll get gimmicy conetent drops over 9 months.
It's called Minecraft Elite.

It even haves clans. You get these call gimicy yellow clan tags infront of you're name. One you're clan gets to level 10, you get these. Also if you're clan level gets to 20, you get 10 diamonds each! And instead of buying the pack for 1200msp (and two crappy side missions) you get them all before in gimmicy content drops. The first item will be villiages and Villigers.
I don't want to be a downer. But just because they have a DLC option in the menu doesn't necessarily mean that there will be DLC. There were many XBLA titles which had this option that never even came out with a DLC. Take D&D Daggerdale for instance. Has the option of DLC, yet it was never used. I'm hoping for DLC though. Even if you have to pay for it, any addition to Minecraft will be a good one.
If I was a modder:
1- Would I want to spend hours, days, weeks, or even months rewriting my mod to another language, and then give it away for free after putting in all that work? How dumb can you get? Modders who don't charge for their hard work are idiots.
2- IF MS or 4J decided to make mods available, they would have to get the modders permission. They would also have to compensate them for their use (or get permission for free- see above). Either way some kind of contract would have to be signed. Then 4J would have to rewrite the mod themselves.
Either way, it's looking bad for "free mods", not to mention there being a bunch of mods available. Their may be a very few available, and don't be surprised if they charge for them in a "expansion pack".
I love it when people say exclusive to the xbox, because it wouldn't take any longer then a day for a mod on the PC version to repeat that, same goes for skins or texture packs. Guys honest to god mods aren't gonna happen.
