Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers NRL Live Streaming
VENUE & TIME: Hunter Stadium – Monday, June 25, 7pm AEDT, 9pm (NZT)
HEAD TO HEAD Played 16 – Knights 7, Tigers 9
LAST TIME: Tigers 17-16 – 2011
Referees: Gerard Sutton/Phil Haines
Round 16 concludes with Monday night rugby when Newcastle welcome the Wests Tigers to Hunter Stadium. The Knights are in that log-jam of teams trying to create space between those below them, while similarly attempting to make up ground on the teams above. The Wests Tigers are honest if nothing else and will look to claim an away win.
MISSING IN ACTION: The Knights have rep pair Darius Boyd and Akuila Uate back on deck after missing the last match on Origin duty. Tigers hooker Robbie Farah has been named but still needs to decide if he wants to play following the death of his mother Sonia last weekend. Five-eighth Curtis Sironen (knee) is out for at least another week with Blake Ayshford to wear the no.6 jersey again.
FORM:
Newcastle finally got some relief last weekend, picking up two competition points thanks to a bye. But their form has been woeful of late with five straight defeats. Another loss to the Tigers on Monday night and Wayne Bennett’s side can already start planning for 2013. The Tigers were losers last-time out but they have been the hottest side in the NRL over the last two months with seven straight wins before the defeat to the Roosters. Tim Sheens side may have had their minds on other things than football last Sunday but should be back on track by the time this game comes around. The Tigers have won the last three encounters between the two clubs.
FOR THE KNIGHTS TO WIN: Newcastle need to muscle up in defence. The Knights have conceded an average of more than 34 points over their last four games which is far too many if they hope to win matches. If they aren’t on their game against the free-scoring Tigers they may be on the end of a cricket score. Newcastle’s forwards will also need to dominate. The Tigers have a strong pack and unless the Knights’ big men match them up front the likes of Jarrod Mullen and Darius Boyd won’t be able to do their thing in attack.
FOR THE TIGERS TO WIN: Props Aaron Woods and Keith Galloway have been in sensational form, laying a tremendous platform for the Tigers backs. While their minds may have been elsewhere, they switched off for a large chunk of last weekend’s loss to the Roosters and can’t afford to do that against what is sure to be a fired-up Newcastle side. Benji Marshall will benefit from having Robbie Farah back alongside him and if the dynamic duo are on their game then the Tigers will have no trouble scoring points.Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens will have forgiven his side for their defeat to the Roosters last weekend under trying circumstances but he won’t be generous again if there is a repeat. The Tigers may have shown of late that winning is a habit, but with five straight losses under their belt earlier this season losing can be too, and Sheens will want to nip any such streak in the bud immediately. The Knights have been dreadful but something tells me Bennett will have them primed for this one.
TEAMS:
Knights: Darius Boyd, James McManus, Dane Gagai, Timana Tahu, Akuila Uate, Jarrod Mullen, Tyrone Roberts, Kade Snowden, Danny Buderus, Willie Mason, Chris Houston, Joel Edwards, Neville Costigan
Interchange: Chris Adams, Zeb Taia, Adam Cuthbertson, Alex McKinnon, Zane Tetevano
