VENUE & TIME: Allianz Stadium, Sunday, June 24, 3pm (AEST), 5pm (NZT)
HEAD TO HEAD layed 119, Roosters 39, Sea Eagles 78, draws 2
LAST TIME: Sea Eagles 18-10, May 20, 2012
Referees: Shayne Hayne, Steve Lyons
MISSING IN ACTION: Roosters coach Brian Smith has made just one minor change with Jake Friend to start at hooker, meaning Anthony Mitchell will revert back to the bench. Kiwi centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall is still missing but they are otherwise at full strength. The Sea Eagles do get their New Zealand centre back though with Steve Matai returning after a two-game suspension. Dean Whare shifts to the right-wing to accommodate his return, meaning Roosters-bound flyer Michael Oldfield drops out of the team. Utility Jamie Buhrer will start at lock in the absence of the injured Glenn Stewart. Full-back Brett Stewart will play his 150th game for Manly.
FORM: The Roosters snapped a four-game losing streak with their shock 42-28 win over the grief-stricken Wests Tigers last Sunday. Brian Smith’s side raced out to a 30-4 lead early in the second half before holding off a late fightback to notch their sixth win of the campaign. It was a victory that keeps the Tri-Colours in touch for a top eight berth but a loss here would almost certainly end any hope they had of figuring in finals football this season.Manly’s inconsistent season continued as they went down 26-22 to runaway leaders Melbourne on Monday night. The defeat has seen the Sea Eagles drop back to eighth spot as one of three sides on 18 competition points. With a bye to come after this weekend, victory here is paramount for the premiers if they are to make a push for a top four spot after the Origin period. Manly have lost just twice to the Roosters in their last 13 clashes.
FOR THE ROOSTERS TO WIN: They just have to bring the same attitude and intensity they did against the Tigers last weekend. The performance showed they can still have a say in this season’s competition and have the firepower to put plenty of points against one of the NRL heavyweights. Jamie Lyon will need to be shutdown and he will be looking for a big game in the absence of partner-in-crime Glenn Stewart. Young forward Lami Tasi will want a big game against his former club while Mitchell Pearce will hope to keep building ahead of going into to NSW Origin camp before Game III.
FOR THE SEA EAGLES TO WIN: Impressive halves Kieran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans have hardly played any football together this season due to injury but now they are re-united they will need to lead from the front. Manly were a bit off the pace against the Storm on Monday night and they must bring more energy. Several big name players had uncharacteristically quiet matches and they’re unlikely to play two bad ones in a row. Expect Manly to target the home side’s suspect left-hand side defence.
This looms as a real banana skin game for the Sea Eagles. By rights Manly should be too classy for the young Roosters outfit but there is a real sense the Tri-Colours will be right up for this game. It will be interesting to see if Bulldogs-bound Sam Perrett plays despite not training with the club this week.
TEAMS:
Sydney Roosters: Anthony Minichiello, Adam Henry, Joseph ‘BJ’ Leilua, Tautau Moga, Sam Perrett, Braith Anasta, Mitchell Pearce, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Jake Friend, Martin Kennedy, Aidan Guerra, Mitchell Aubusson, Frank Paul Nuuausala
Interchange: Anthony Mitchell, Boyd Cordner, Lama Tasi, Mose Masoe, Tom Symonds, Tinirau Arona, Daniel Mortimer (three to be omitted)
