Unfortunately only 4J can truly answer this question, but my thought is that we should take this as a sign that 4J is doing well and can hopefully afford to hire more people to update at the same or better rate that they have done in the past.
It's stupid enough it takes so damned long to update just the MC360 version, but now with the XboxOne out, and then stretching even more resources to create the PS version, it's going to take quite awhile for updates. It's sad how long it takes already anyways, this will only be a problem
They probably will have two teams. One working for the Xbox 360/One, and another team for the Sony platforms.
Hopefully this. If they were smart they would only work on multiple platforms if it didn't hinder their progress. The updates are already slow as it is, they definitely will need more people working on it.

Well you try programming a 3D game and tell me how long it takes to get an actual playable version :). I have no idea why people think its so easy. It takes years of learning and practicing to learn a language. Half Life 2 took I think over 4 years with over 20 people working on it. Now I have never programmed on a XBox but I'm guessing its either the same difficulty or maybe even harder to make a 3D game.

Honestly what you just said is stupid. obviously they know what they are doing so that no excuse for being slow. honestly they can take the same amount of time for the updates but sense its the PS4 I expect ALOT in each update.
There's such a thing as a 'contractual obligation', and we're not privy to it. Sony decided they want the PS versions to come out... and when. Sony decided how often the updates are to come out and put it in the contract.
4J signed a contract with Sony to put it out and to provide X number of updates/year. They're in the process of hiring enough people to meet those 'contractual obligations'. As long as Sony pays for it, 4J will hire all the people they need to get the job done that Sony specified.
If you have a problem with the number of updates/year that comes out- take it up with Sony. They made the rules- 4J is just playing the game.
(The same thing applies to MS's One contract, too.)
Hah, I guess I must have clicked to stop receiving notifications from this topic. Anyways, I know programming takes a bit, but this is not something that they are making up on the spot. These things are in a game that they just need to convert to XNA and C++. Now that they are developing for 4 systems all with different architecture, the process of maintaining all of those different versions will require either a 3x boost in staffing/productivity or outsourcing to another developer under 4J's name, and that's just to maintain their current release standards of an update every couple of months. It's not like it truly matters to me though. I own the 360 version, but have since, stopped playing it because of how far behind it is and how limited it is. It's just not as fun with limits. The only good thing I noticed about it is the redstone actually works well due to the C++ coding.
As of right now, you can expect Xbox updates to be late and delayed, or not as packed as you thought.
But, when they get a good running start on the Sony systems, expect multiple teams handling the seperate consoles.
Minecraft is already a beautiful and awesome game on console and PC. Don't complain be happy you have it at all and make the best of it!
Games are as fun as you make them. They will only give back what you put in. Don't rely on 4J to make the game more fun; perhaps some of you should rethink the perspective you hold while playing games.
The last time I checked, Black Ops 2 has made fewer than half as many updates as Minecraft in the time it has been out... And a single one of those updates costs more than the ENITRE Minecraft game.... Or close to it.
It already feels like it takes them too long to produce an update.

Its sad that a lot of people don't understand that programming is hard work and take time.
Simple version
We buy it= 4j gets more money=4j hires more workers=upadates happen quicker

Like you know.
