Minecraft Pi seems to be hardcoded to never connect to a survival mode server. I had this problem using Pocketmine.

If anyone is still here I have made an improved version of the Survival Patch as part of my MCPI-Docker project. The MCPI-Docker project allows you to run MCPI on desktop Linux. It can probably be coerced into running on a Raspberry Pi as well. My patch supports attacking mobs, joining MCPE 0.6.1 servers (including PocketMine), translations in the Crafting UI, fancy graphics (clouds and transparent leaves), placing signs, enabling/disabling the hidden MCPE touch UI, setting a new username, a fix for the bow, the ability to disable auto-jump by default, selected block outlines, and more! Another feature is that it will detect what game-mode a world/server is in rather than forcing Survival. So your creative worlds can stay creative.
