Heres the wiki page. It doesn't really state how many maximum there are. There are some confirming videos on the matter I just can't find them right now.
It does. You must have accidentally skipped over the third and fourth sentence of that wiki page: "A maximum of twenty portals can be generated for each world, arranged in a circular fashion around the island at Y-level 75, approximately 70 to 100 blocks away from the center (0,0). Killing the ender dragon afterwards will not generate further portals."
There is also a graph showing 20 portals and a picture at the bottom showing the same. So, it is quite firmly established.

Just finished our Guardian farm on our server. It is epic and produces over 100,000 items per hour when no players are in other areas of the overworld. It took quite a while too.
This picture below is from another guy on our server. What a beautiful sunset! In case you're wondering, those spruce leaves are for increasing the rates. Guardians spawn more the less light there is (or is it skylight?). We have a prismarine and prismarine brick crafting station, as well as a custom sea lantern crafting station designed by the server owner, xMistaBeastx. And of course we have storage for all those items. Oh, and that diamond beacon you see? It's all diamond. No iron or gold or emerald blocks behind the front ones. Just all diamonds.
Here is what we will work on as one of our next HUGE projects (it's a hint )
Again, not my picture. A member sent it through skype.

Dang, that server looks really fun to play on. Wish I could join. Jk I'd probably end up being everybody's digging and gathering slave, as redstone is not my strong suit. Anyways, that farm looks amazing, very well done. I can't wait to see what the new Mooshroom farm will look like. Is this one gonna be smaller than ZipKrowd's mega farm? Those farms will feed everyone on the server for years. Well, I see you are enjoying this server so have fun.

Thank you. Um, it will be underground since mobs spawn better there. We plan to dig out the area within that giant rectangle. But yeah, it will be smaller than Zipkrowd's version. And just to let you know, I don't consider myself a redstone expert or anything like that. Our server owner is better than me.

Let's see... Just recently finished a blaze farm, an AFK fishery, and a throne room, and brought back my fifth dragon head. Upcoming projects are a brutalist-style ankh-skyscraper, modeled after the ankhs on desert temples but at a massive scale, a guardian farm, and a villager auto-breeder.
Well, I started a new survival world a week ago, I wanted this world to be a total no-cheats world. In my past worlds, I did several small cheats like /give, /xp, /time set. I do not want to do any cheats in this world. As it ruins the whole survival experience. Anyways, I started my world, and I spawned in a plains biome right next to a swamp. Interestingly, there was a witch hut that was halfway in the plains biome right next to spawn. All the pics are located in the spoilers.
The witch doesn't seem too happy about this newcomer:
I collected some basic starter items, like wood, cobble, and food. (Apples) I then set out on a short journey to find a nice place to settle. I ventured south, through a large birch forest, and I came upon a beautiful hilly flower forest next to a plains. And even better yet, a jungle! I used some dark oak wood to build a small entrance to a temporary underground home to live in while I do my beginning projects.
I put some furnaces, a crafting table, and a bed in my new home.
Ok, that was the beginning of my world. Let's fast-forward a week. Here are several pics of my progress throughout the week.
The results of my first mining trip:
The results of my second mining trip:
My farm:
Whew! That was a lot of things! I hope the pics were self-explanatory. Feel free to ask questions. Right now I am going to build some mob farms and other bigger assets. My first project is going to be a double chunk slime farm. Once I get a lot of assets up and running, I will be working on building an enormous kingdom with cities, villages, history, temples, roads, aqueducts, walls, and much more. For my main base, which I won't get around to for awhile, will be a HUGE castle around 5000-10000 blocks away in the future great city. I am still scouting for locations. I might include a pic sometime for plans of my kingdom.
Anyways, I started work on my slime farm. Only about 100 blocks away from my home base:

5000-10000 blocks? I hope you have a good reason for going that far to build a castle. I like your crop farm by the way.

I want a prime location for my castle. There are several locations I have scouted out, and on average they are 4000-7000 blocks out. I am still looking though. What I am looking for is a plains biome partly surrounded by mountains next to an ocean. I like long distance projects.
Well, new update, I have been making progress on my slime farm, and I killed my first enderman. I am gonna go to the end once I have enough ender pearls for the portal. I am not specifically hunting for endermen, I just kill them as they come by. I mined out quite a bit in the slime farm, so here are some pics:
Here is a view of my base from the slime farm:
I decided to enchant a new pick, and I was happy to get prime enchantments on a silk touch pick.
Do the all have different stats/speeds? Perhaps you've only done a little testing with all those saddles, but is there any difference at all?
I have yet to encounter a skeleton trap despite playing on hard and never sleeping during thunderstorms. I rode around an expansive plains during a storm looking for one (I play large biome).

In the past couple of weeks I've mostly done planning for my new town, my new castle, and my new Wither Skeleton farm. I started building the Wither Ripper back in 1.8 and I finished the spawn platforms, but then 1.9 rolled around and I've been designing a new method of bringing all the mobs down to 1/2 a heart, sorting them into different killing chambers, and adding toggleability for each of them. Admittedly I haven't made a finished model in creative or survival, but I do know how I will do it. (to come later)
Screenshot of the planned area for my new castle:
Put your spoiler here.
It's the first castle I've ever built in Minecraft, so I don't expect anything spectacular. Nonetheless I'm spending time in creative and on paper creating designs for it.
On a much more boring note, I built a nether tunnel and a room for the portal to my squid farm:
I just so happened to be trying out a "Beta textures" resource pack when I took the screenshot
The netherrack marks where future tunnels may be built.
And finally, today I finished building the Panda, Spire, Casper, and 2No2Name's new sand duplicator. The bedrock breaking took a frustrating amount of time for some reason. I think it was because my singleplayer world lags really badly since 1.9 came out.
I broke the outer layer of bedrock using the dragon egg, and the lower one using ender crystals.
I don't plan on using this so much for anvils and dragon eggs as for sand and red sand. I already crafted a ton of anvils back when the Iron Titan was running in my world, and I don't have any use for dragon eggs aside possibly breaking bedrock.

Dajum! Not bad bro! Not bad! What's with all that AFK fishery's? You got to click for fishes right? Or am i'm missing something?
Btw what's the fun part of 1K items each hour?
AFK fisheries are actually a bit of a confusing thing, and it's not really obvious how they work, so yeah, you're missing something, and it's to be expected. The AFK fisheries work by exploiting (technically; it's not really an 'exploit', per se) two things: fishing bobbers activate tripwires, and iron doors can be interacted with. The system uses a tripwire to detect the fishing bobber, which then opens an iron door into the player's line of sight. When a fish gets hooked, it pulls the bobber down out of the tripwire, closing the door and making the player pull in the line. The door is on a clock, which makes it close periodically while there's no bobber in the tripwire's path, so all the player needs to do is hold down the 'use' key while aiming into the door, which can be done in the background with a little bit of key-rebinding trickery. NimsTV has a video on it here: The design uses an iron trapdoor, but is functionally identical to the one I use. EDIT: Somehow I always mess up video links.
Also, 1K items an hour is nice when you want to go ditzing around in the End for a while, and don't want to worry about falling to your death and losing valuable resources. It's a long way down if you misstep, or if your bridge lags out from under you as you're building it.
My sister and I explored a Nether Fortress on Saturday. It was her first. It had some really good loot. The best I've ever found. We were most excited about the two sets of diamond horse armor we found. Then we got mobbed by several wither skeletons and a few blazes. We had back up armor where we respawned. After a couple attempts we finally were able to retrieve some of our stuff, but not the horse armor. So Wednesday we are going to explore another fortress and if we find some really good stuff, we are going to put it in a chest until we are ready to leave.

Ooh, Nether fortress runs are quite a favorite pastime for me. Two tips: One, once you've got a blaze rod, fall back and make a brewing stand, then get yourself some potions of Fire Resistance; blazes become a non-issue after that. Two, make two-block ceilings wherever you can, and wither skeletons won't be able to follow you.

Nether Fortresses can provide quite the harrowing experience, especially for a first-timer. I've not liberated one in more than a year. I need to clear one out in 1.9.
I've only found one suit of diamond horse armor in my vanilla SSP world, began July 2, 2014, and can't bare the thought of losing two sets! The Nether has swallowed a lot of valuables. I carry fire resistance potions on my hot bar every time I visit. Not having potions makes the adventure more exciting, but the chance of loss greater. You got burned this time, but the Nether holds more treasures to discover!
