Not sure if 1.9 has anything to do with it, but I have had this particular world a while and just started playing in it again. I was minding my own business in my village, touching up the basement of my town hall. (Note, my village is totally mob proof so night is not dangerous) Suddenly, a burning dog spawned next to me and started running around.. and then another one, and I was like "wat?" Until I realized, my house must be on fire and my pack of dogs is burning!! I ran outside and sure enough, my beautiful wooden house was burning down. I managed to stop it and none of the dogs died. However, I have no idea what happened and half my house is gone. I have one lava square in my cellar but the only flammable thing in burning range was a ladder, which is still there. Anyone know what could have happened?
As tuts said, on Normal difficulty and higher, thunderstorms can start fires.
if that is not the answer, we would need more details about the house. Are you absolutely certain there are no flammable blocks within range of the lava? Take a look at this thread for more information on how fire starts and spreads, it is a very informative guide.

This is a test, this is only a test.
boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...
Very helpful thread, Aura. I do not remember any thunderstorms that might have happened. But from that thread it seems that fire blocks can refresh even if they didn't burn anything for a while. The lava block is actually a hole into my obsidian bunker. I went down there and got stuck so I had to dig my way out. That might have refreshed the block and lit the house on fire(still only seems like a ladder is in range of the lava). Or I was in the town hall longer than I thought and totally missed a thunderstorm... Thanks again!
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Meaning to say that not all wooden items are flammable by any incendiary materials, which is unnatural in real life.
Yes, that's true, but all I meant was that lava doesn't burn ladders; since the OP mentioned it several times, I wanted to clarify.

Ah, Ok. That means that the ladder won't burn only if it is not made of wood, just to make it realistic in nature.
What do you mean, "only if it is not made of wood"? There aren't any non-wooden ladders in Minecraft.

Was there a recent thunderstorm? I have actually seen lightning start a fire in a jungle.

Oh, I see.
I don't. Please elaborate.
