Hey people,
So I'm attempting to make my first mob spawner - I'm not just copying a youtube video I'm trying to cobble out as much as I can myself.
I don't want spiders to spawn as they tend to be difficult with their climbing ability and all that - I read somewhere that people recommend putting half slabs down in each 2X2 section so that it is not possible that they spawn.
What i wanted was a work around so that spiders would not spawn - but you wouldn't lose the spawning space due to the half slabs. (Just a full block instead of a half slab - so it's still an active spawning space.)
Would spiders still spawn if the active spawning areas are uneven? I know they need a 2X2 so I hope this is a decent work around.
The space they needed is air blocks of space with one 1 solid block for which to spawn upon. For your work around to function correctly, you'd have to build from the ceiling down a block here and there to prevent the 3x3 area needed without reducing spawnable area for mobs needing only 1x1x2 spawn areas.
Stalagmites vs Stalactites.
Honestly, though, as long as you have every nearby cave/mine/dungeon/etc. 100% lit and your above-ground area is also well lit at night, you shouldn't have to worry about losing spawnable areas as the mobs will cap out anyway and as long as they find the water elevator and death chamber(s), you should be fine.
I once built a double-decker spawner based on Etho's design with a total of 32 6x6 spawn pads with only 4 of the 32 allowing for spiders to spawn. The upper platform used suspended flowing water that lead to drop points at the + intersections to drop mobs down to the lower area, where they would be lead to the water elevator.
If using water to move mobs, I suggest you keep in mind that you might sometimes get squid spawning in your mob system unless you build above Y=62.
BTW, I didn't realize that witches are smart enough to use potions to prevent death from falling. I find my new death mechanism needs a redesign. Luckily I'm still in the planning stage (I have a mob grinder I modify in a flat world to test new designs...where I found witches surviving...grrr). It's okay, I'll figure it out. Lava perhaps...they definitely don't drown.
I also forgot to mention that I redstone-wire my spawn chambers, so I can turn them off with a switch using lamps built into the platforms. They don't take away from spawn area asaik, but even if they did it wouldn't really matter. That thing pumps out unlife like you wouldn't believe.
Also spiders are stupid. They will climb up a wall into a ceiling of suspended water and drown without a complaint. I happen to have a spider dungeon in one of my worlds that is attached to an underground hub. I might do a conversion at some point to see if I can take advantage of this.
I'm thinking a 9x9 room with 6 layers: Ceiling with redstone lamp connected to switch > 3x3 water source blocks at center > layer of signs > air > 5x5 spawning platform > spawner surrounded by a 5x5 ring of half-slabs (bottom) > floor consisting of a 2-wide ring of hoppers around the outer edge all interconnected to a double chest. Perhaps the corners of the platform could be posts going up to, but not into, the water layer to help facilitate the spiders going up. I'll have to build and test what works best.

I've found that witches don't survive a 30 block drop for sure, so not sure what you think you're seeing. Lava will not kill them because with their regen potion effect plus a fire resistance they can't die.

What about this as a solution?

Mind your Craft.
I'm pretty sure they'll just spawn on top of the blocks, they only need the center block to be solid and space to the sides.
The Wiki says they need a 3X3 space to spawn so you probably only need one half slab per 3X3 space.
Just testing.

Great post Deykhal!
Yeah except for my run-on sentences lol.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
