One of my dogs died in lava, I had a water bucket but I was too dumbfounded as to how stupid it was to get the water to it on time. Then when I went to another lava lake to get more obsidian I brought another dog with me thinking the first death was a fluke. Surely all dogs wouldn't be stupid enough to swim in lava like it was water would they? I was on the opposite side of the lava lake to the dog but instead of walking around it decided to swim across the lava to me. I was quicker with the water this time but now my dogs stay at home
I once had a fireplace in a hotel I had built. I brought all (counts) 8 of my dogs in there because there was nowhere else to go. Before I sit one down, he runs... RIGHT INTO THE FIREPLACE. It was a block up and I was like "OH NO!" smacking out the fire, spawning in a water bucket... and he got off fire before I could save him, but he lived. I fed him a lot of porkchops from creative mode after that and covered my fireplace with glass.
He was also a pup, and don't pups have less health than adult wolves unless you feed them? (I was using Damage Indicators once and it showed a wolf pup having 15 health and an adult having 20.) He had to have been at around 1 health. I was just glad he lived. (It was then when I taught myself to type faster.)
*Jumps too much* ow!!! *no respawn screen* What?! *5 seconds later* *respawn screen shows up
This is on the dropper again.
My computer only says it has allocated memory is at the maximum 499MB
My computer only has 499MB total lol. I also play 1.8 and get about 1 FPS, which makes a lot of nonexistent bugs appear on my game. Or I can play on 2 render distance and get 100 FPS (with Optifine and everything as fast as possible) but as soon as I load another chunk, it's 4 FPS. I have a weird computer.

This is because you have 32 bit Java and didn't check the JVM arguments box in the profile editor (which allocates 1 GB), one of the biggest factors in performance in 1.8 (older versions may also not be happy if you use 32 bit Java on a 64 bit OS, due to the OS having to emulate a 32 bit environment); basically, you might as well just do what I do and mod an older version if you have a 32 bit computer (which probably doesn't meet 1.8's system requirements anyway, and I can't even see how people play with 1-20 FPS and server lag).
Memory itself isn't the issue though, you can allocate up to 1 GB on 32 bit but it doesn't make any difference; see this post showing that 500 MB of RAM is more than enough to run the game, so long you don't try using 32 chunk render distance (vanilla actually prevents this but Optifine doesn't):
So regardless and conclusion what bit version of the JVM, memory allocation is not an issue here. A fault belies elsewhere between 32 bit and 64 bit. However it is not memory nor machine specific. It could be GPU display driver level, or if want to say LWJGL itself. So yes there is a performance issue when running Minecraft on a 32 bit java environment, but as to true cause, it certainly is not memory related.
Also, people often talk about mods eating up gigs of memory but those must be some badly coded mods or they have a memory leak; a sizable mod I made only requires about 250 MB of memory; not kidding (any additional memory that is allocated is due to garbage collection, which will eventually use up all of the available memory but is not actually used for anything; some people think allocating more lets "more of the game fit into RAM" or use it as a disk cache for chunks but those are wrong; the first will be pretty obvious if the game can't fit into RAM (out of memory) and the second is done by the OS (cached memory in Task Manager), which is why you should leave free memory in your computer):
It is also interesting to note that the "64 bit Java recommended for Far render distance" warning in 1.6.4 and older versions is not so much because of the amount of memory that can be allocated but because of the total memory required by the Java process, which contradictorily means allocating less memory is the solution (you have 2 GB to play with, of which the heap memory, which is the part you can control, takes up a part of, the rest is used by the JVM and native libraries, especially OpenGL). Note that vanilla 1.6.4 doesn't even properly render "Far" anyway since the internal server only loads out to 10 chunks, just two more than "Normal"; you are just wasting resources (even with nothing to render the game still uses more resources) and making chunk rendering bugs more common (apparently caused by the game trying to render an empty chunk, then not updating it even as new chunks render around it; one of the more annoying issues in older versions, next to the black shadows bug).
A similar out of memory situation can happen when using HD texture packs - with allocating less memory again being the solution, as noted here (with a 256x texture pack 256-768 MB worked, 1 GB crashed; note that the moderators are clueless to this problem and just tell you to allocate more memory - explaining the replies that it didn't help). Even the shaders mod recommends not allocating too much memory for a similar reason:
ShadersMod and OpenGL requires a lot of memory outside java heap.
Make sure you have enough memory remaining outside java heap.

Playing on an vanilla server, just being afk to take something from fridge. I was in my house. It was locked. It was... locked.
I got back with a "You died!" message and all my 4 stacks of diamonds already vanished. That was stupid keeping them in inv. (I didn't think that I would die, because yeah, I almost never die).
That is the BIG disadvantage of servers. (when people mess with you)

I meant fails where you die and lose your progress and start from scratch. In fact, I haven't touched the original world since I fell into the lava!!!
That's why I always wrote down coordinates of where my stuff was (in SMP mode, that is). I would always make sure to have two different caches of treasure/mats/useful items.
I used to play online until these really young kids kept griefing me and then after a while of me putting up with it (because they never found my secret base with tons of items that I stored there), I befriended them. I played with them abit but they always played dirty to other players so I quit multiplayer....and they used something called notus or nodus or something, which gave them a ton of illegit hacks.
The only reasons why they wanted me to help them was because I was good at hiding/being undetected in multiplayer servers, and I could gather tons of mats in a short amount of time.
Now I only play Singleplayer survival, and basically I make a giant fortress where I store everything, and then for half a day I go out with some food in my inventory and mine for more coal/iron/gold/diamonds/emeralds/redstone/lapiz, etc..,
I make sure to reinforce my fortress with stone bricks, after I have already carved out a good spot in an extreme hill, usually. When I played multiplayer my fortress was always something like 15,000 blocks away from the spawn point and it was underground, underwater, across a large span of ocean lol. I trusted nobody.
Then I make sure to deposit most of my findings in the fortress, maybe keep a couple diamonds on me if I have a surplus, just in case I need to make an extra sword or use towards making an extra pick. I almost always never make diamond picks, just a ton of iron ones, iron everything, so its never a major loss for me.
Although there were times I really hated myself for failing so badly. One time I ran across a spider spawn area, and I got caught in a spiderweb and couldn't move. There were like ten or twenty spiders that were in the area and they mauled me. I didn't know at the time that my sword could cut the spiderwebs easily....I just tried to kill spiders and died.
I've fallen in lava plenty of times. The worst was when (I already told this story in a different thread), I was about to eat a golden apple I made that was in my inventory and I accidentally threw it in lava right after I jumped in to go after some diamonds. I died.
I usually fail from falling from high places. Almost 100% of the time it is when I think I can safely jump down a water elevator, or if I have feather falling boots, I underestimate the damage I'll take from falling.
If I go out to mine, I usually bring at least three stacks of ladders and a stack of dirt to maneuver around a cave and get out of/into difficult to reach areas. I'll also bring like 40-50 steaks and porkchops after I have hunted for a long time.
I haven't played SMP survival in a while though, I'd probably suck at it unless I played on a specific seed.
Working on my first world! (my house IRL). Still working on it solo, would like some help soon---it doesn't need to look like my house, framework of house still supports custom-size, shape, and layout of most rooms.
Changelog 9 May 2015:
-carved out more space from y=66/normal-y-height to y=20 to allow more room for 1st floor
-designing landscape outside of house on paper for now, will use WorldEdit to make large, smooth and life-size looking shrubberies and plants, working on a good landscape gradient from ~y=30 to y=bedrock for dirt, grass, stone, brick, etc. (walkways, driveway, greenbelt)

I use 1.7.10 (Modded), so when I comment that I like a 1.8 mod, I will comment to downgrade to 1.7.10. I support no pics, no clicks. Suggestions that I think that are the best deserves a banner!
It is almost time to say goodbye to 1.7.10 because of the recent surge of big 1.9 mods.
Why MCreator sucks: jcm2606's file (doesn't open a new tab) He allows/welcomes anyone to link the file, so I put it here in my signature for people to know how MCreator functions. I thank jcm2606 (he's awesome) for creating the document/file and I'm just here to spread the word.
500+ huggles? U wot, m8?
