Yes, you only need three iron (plus two for shears), then you can just use diamonds; like I said, I have no use for iron ore after my first tools/armor and can easily get what I need afterwards from chests (an anvil only uses on average 1.24 iron ingots per repair, I mostly use shears to clear cobwebs from cave spider spawners, and mineshafts of course have iron in chests, far more than I need).
Hmm, that's true, but what if you don't find a mine, village, dungeon, etc.? I know that's highly improbable, but I have spawned in worlds that I still haven't found any of those, and I've been playing on and off for about 2 months. Rare, but not impossible. xD

Mineshafts and dungeons are actually pretty common; I have multiple double chests of mineshaft rails and find at least one dungeon almost every time I play and have probably explored at least 100 mineshafts and an uncountable number of dungeons since I started playing (when people say the underground is like Swiss cheese they really mean it; here is proof, and that is just one of my worlds, only showing explored caves over an area 4,000 blocks long. Of course, the size of cave systems was reduced by a factor of nearly three in 1.7, along with a 2.5 fold reduction in the number of mineshafts, plus a halving in the density of dungeons, the last possibly inadvertent since they doubled the y=range from 128 to 256 along with the max height of terrain, but didn't adjust cave generation to suit).

Wow. I was expecting a crap ton of people saying that diamond was their favorite ore. I'd have to say diamond ore is my favorite, mostly because...well...it's diamond! It provides good tools and armor. It gives you an opportunity to get obtain obsidian and go to the Nether. It also provides you with the materials to make an enchantment table, which entirely enhances and improves your gameplay. For me, I'd have to say that my favorite aspect of diamond is so that I can mine obsidian and go to the Nether so I can obtain more materials and further my progress in said world.

As Caver said, mineshafts are pretty common, although if you're ultra-desperate you could probably get your diamonds but luring a creeper onto some diamond ore and making a pick with it ASAP.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
My favorite ore is Iron because it has a high durability for the stage of the game it comes into play, and it is also extremely common, being the second most common ore after coal. Iron is my mainstay throughout my games because I save my diamonds for weapons and enchantment tables for the various bases I create throughout the time I'm in my worlds.

I am the biggest Minecraft nerd in the group. I've spent so long researching the game and looking at the code that I will know almost anything about the behavior of the game. As a derivative of that, I am also a great authority on how to play the game. So if you're the biggest noob on the server, given time and practice, I can help you get better than the admin. My IGN is ArcFighter300.

TBH, coal ore will probably be quite useful up until I manage to create a simple but fast and safe wither skeleton farm. Nether quartz ore is epic for redstone (necessary for comparators and daylight sensors) and diamond ore is quite good for most armor and tools (but not hoes, axes, or shovels! I make those out of stone, sometimes shovels out of iron).

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
BUTTER IS NOT AN ORE!
You don't make a pickaxe out of butter
