I'm going to propose a solution for podzol spreading forming that resembles "spreading". That way, you have to have collected some podzol before you can grow form more, and it won't take over landscapes. But first, let me make what seems like a foolish and illogical assumption:
Dead leaves only fall on podzol.
Well, I tried to warn you. But let me explain myself. Every time a block of podzol got a random block update, it would check for a [possibly only spruce] leaf block above it. Every so often, podzol would check if extra dead [possibly only spruce] leaves fell onto it.
There might be a random chance of it spreading or not, and that should happen right now, before any more time is wasted on calculations.
It then checks for regular dirt in all the blocks one block away in the x or z direction, up to 5 blocks down [for example - this number might have to be tweaked] , and picks the topmost block. It then checks for regular dirt in or below the adjacent blocks, and selects the block least likely to be covered by other dirt. If the dirt block has air above it, it changes into a podzol block; if not, it selects the next topmost block and runs the check for air again. The extra dead leaves fall off the podzol and onto the nearest block of dirt, changing it into podzol.
In conclusion, this method:
shouldn't cause any more lag than grass.
causes podzol to somewhat realistically form under/near trees and only under/near trees, but
doesn't cause podzol to come where there isn't any podzol and also
doesn't cause podzol to take over grass.
simulates dead leaves falling down [this is why I would check only the blocks below], not spreading up.
So let me know what you think! (sorry if "bumping" or "necroing" this topic)
I would only support this if it spread like how it is made in real life: fallen leaves at the bottom of forests. It should only spread if there are multiple leaf blocks directly above it. It does not need to spread like grass or mycelium because that would make no sense. I know Minecraft isn't based 100% on realism but it doesn't need to be made more unrealistic. Do we need cracked stone bricks to spread to adjacent stone brick blocks? Does Chiseled Sandstone need to spread to adjacent Sandstone blocks? That's why it's completely ridiculous for Podzol to spread like grass.

To those of you suggesting new uses for Emeralds in the suggestions forum: Emeralds have enough uses. You can trade with villagers to get diamond armor/tools/weapons and enchants. Stop suggesting that Emeralds are useless, and learn to play Minecraft. Thanks.
To all those who think that podzol should form under trees, or that it should be craftable: Currently, podzol is only obtainable if you find a mega taiga and have silk touch, and I want it to stay that way. I want it to be renewable, but I still want it to be rare. However, a crafting recipe that required podzol, dirt, and leaves to make two blocks of podzol might work - but seems a bit unfitting for vanilla.
Total support for making the block possibly infinite, so you can create with it in another way than being in creative. Also I making that the block only spreads in mega taiga is a great idea, as it makes it pretty complicated to get there every time you want to reload your blocks. I saw a video where it took gold pressure plates, the principle of making them expansive with renewable blocks could be interesting also. It wouldn't be OP to have an infinite block for creating things. I don't believe this saves so much for growing mushrooms as it is easy to dig a cave to grow some, knowing that harvesting it already takes silk touch. The challenge would also be there if it couldn't grow elsewhere than in mega taiga biomes, hard to find in the first place.

Howabout it spreads underneath tree leaves...you have to place podzol in the first place, but as long as there are any kind of leaf block above it, it can spread.
I would also like to see a full podzol block in addition to the currently existing block which is drawn as if it is dirt with a thin layer of podzol on top. Perhaps in some parts of the mega taiga, the podzol layer could be much thicker, formed with full podzol blocks.

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).
No. Mycelia spread like wildfire, faster than grasses. Podzol forms very slowly over decades and only in densely forested taiga, under evergreen trees such as spruce, fir, or douglas fir (which isn't a fir).

The biggest issue with the Podzol spreading is that podzol is an ID of dirt. Grass and mycelium spreading are simple- just replace the dirt with either one- but Podzol spreading would be more complex. No support.

Watch out for the crabocalypse. Some say the day will never come. But it will.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.

You can change the dirt's ID just as easily as you can replace the block. Furthermore, you don't need to declare your lack of support for the proposal when responding to a comment that isn't supporting it.
I'd say Podzol should spread but only in the biomes it naturally generates in and if there is at least one leaf block in a 3x100x3 area above it
That's a good idea.
There are parts of biomes in which grass is unable to propagate across dirt--or at least there was once before coarse dirt was in the game, and there might still be. There could be places like that where podzol is able to propagate, while in most places it can't.

I don't support, because it's unrealistic but what you said fine enough.
Did the OP edit his post? Then how come he made a suggestion about podzol in 2013?

I think that Podzol should spread AND be craftable. It'd make gameplay better for a lot of us.
^ Nuff said.
Not enough said. You haven't said why.

How about just making it craftable with a dirt block and a leaf block?
You can change the dirt's ID just as easily as you can replace the block. Furthermore, you don't need to declare your lack of support for the proposal when responding to a comment that isn't supporting it.
That's too easy. Many players have voiced opposition to making it easy to obtain podzol without visiting a Mega Taiga biome.
