Being on PC, players have a lot more control over their experience (E.g: Mods). Think of "Java Edition" as a bonus subtitle. It's up there with "Director's Cut", not the same as the more commonly viewed film, but with more content in return.
I can see what you mean, but Mojang wants new customers to understand that when they buy "Minecraft" it can play with "Minecraft."
Plus, whether you like it or not, the Win10/Pocket/Console Editions are becoming more polished than Minecraft: Java Edition. Also, it's easier to explain to people why, for example, BUD powering works, as, "That's how it is on the Java Edition" than, "That's how it is normal Minecraft. You have to get the special 'Pocket' edition if you don't want that."
Yes, Mojang could have just called the newer versions something new, but it doesn't look like they're going to change that at this point. If you're still upset, well, then take this cool Villager:

And that means the JAVA version will be forgotten. No thank you, i would rather have a great customer who plays REAL Minecraft.

Nope, the JAVA edition will forever be the superior and the original version.

Think about it, they can add all the stuff they can to Minecraft: crossplay, but Minecraft: PC/MAC will always have it own unique feature, it can be modified.
Minecraft Java is a bad game. It's fundamentally flawed, and highly unoptimized. Why do you think you need a fairly beefy computer to even run the game properly, unless you have Optifine installed? Minecraft's code is a mess, and that's really shoot it in the foot in the coming years. It's very hard for the developers to keep updating the gaem because it is such a messy bunch of code.
Minecraft: Bedrock (as the crossplay versions are also referred as) was built from the ground up to be as succesful and big as Minecraft: Java now is. And as a result, it's incredibly more optimized. If I run Minecraft: Java I get a framerate in the single digits. Running Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition on the same system gives me a solid 60 fps, without having to downgrade the Video Settings at all. Not to mention the Bedrock version being almost on par with the Java version, especially after the Better Together update releases.
But all of this doesn't matter. At all. Because the game's gonna be renamed Minecraft: Java edition. You know, the name the community has been using to differentiate it from the other versions since the day the other versions were released. Literally nothing is changing, it's such insignificant of a change.
I can see from your comments that you're very elitist about the Java version of the game and I recommend you to stop that. Because Minecraft Java isn't the best version of Minecraft, or even the best selling version of Minecraft. Minecraft PE is superior both code wise and saleswise to Minecraft: Java, and has been so for at least a year.
Even as someone that highly prefers the computer edition over mobile or console editions, seeing as the Java Edition allows for a much more community content and software freedom in the form of mods, maps, etc, I can still agree with this. Minecraft Java no longer runs smoothly on a 2GB RAM computer (Although it seems Minecraft 1.4.5 works pretty well on the same computer...).
To be fair, though, games built for consoles and phones aren't meant to be made for such a wide variety of possible computer designs. You have people with little to no money running a computer that a relative or a business gave them for work, as well as people building bleeding-edge computers that cost thousands of dollars and expect peak performance from their games. And that's not counting different Operating Systems.

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
Source? I have trouble believing Mojang would jeopardize the very large modding community Minecraft: Java Edition has by re-writing the entire game in a different language.
(Although it seems Minecraft 1.4.5 works pretty well on the same computer...).
That is because of code rewrites in 1.8 which significantly deoptimized the game (even as they claimed the opposite; system requirements say otherwise); I have no issues running modded 1.6.4 (using my own mods, which are actual optimized, unlike most mods) with just 512 MB of memory allocated (with only around 2/3 of that actually being allocated). Actually, even 1.12.1 did not have issues with that much memory the last time I used it; the main issue with 1.8+ is the rate at which memory is allocated and deallocated due to all the short-lived objects and this depends more on memory speed and type and CPU speed (garbage collector throughput).
I don't even need Optifine to get good performance in 1.6.4 - this is at all maximum settings (albeit the internal server limits view distance to 10 chunks) and modded (note the memory used/allocated; there is no difference between a max of 512 MB or 1 GB if it isn't even using 512):
As far as the name of the game goes, I still think of it as the PC Edition although I don't have any issue with the "official" name change (which, as mentioned before, has been used to describe it for a while now), or even if the other versions overtook it (which they already have in terms of sales). Modding? A rewrite to C? They aren't going to rewrite older versions; modded 1.6.4 is no longer really 1.6.4 so it doesn't really matter if they stop updating it (there are games with thriving modding communities long after official updates ceased), and isn't PE/Win10 a rewrite anyway? If they rewrote Java to C you'd have the same thing, just with some different block/item/entity IDs (e.g. fences; the PE implementation is also much better since they did not waste block IDs), which is the main reason why it is not going to be part of the "better together" update (the programming language does not matter as long as the data is interpreted in the same way).
As far as the name goes, I don't care too much which is which. Minecraft is Minecraft to me. What I do worry about is whether this might mean eventually that the Java version is given less attention and not kept up to parity.
As far as which is better, I think some of the comments are silly. Sales alone don't indicate which is better. The mobile and console versions could be more accessible, the Windows 10 edition could have been pushed more, etc. There's too many variables. I also don't care which is better "code-wise". As a player, that doesn't matter to us. Performance DOES matter however, and yes the Windows 10 edition or whatever it's called now is better there, but I'll take a version that needs more to run, that I can run at 60 FPS+ anyway, to a version that performs better but is inherently more limited as far as what I can do with it (this is my personal stance on it only, I realize not everyone can run the game smoothly although honestly my old and weaker laptop can run even the recent poorly performing versions decently). That being said, the one comment about "pro gamers" (this is being said about Minecraft here, right... ?) or that you have to play the Java edition to be more of a player is silly. Elitism either way is wrong. Both versions have their perks that appeal to different players and which one is better will therefore be subjective depending on who you ask and what they want from it.
Oh yeah, I know about the 1.8 thing, but I also feel like they did something around 1.7.10. I dunno if it's just me or not, but when I play a light modpack in 1.7.10, it feels just a tad laggier than a 1.6.4 pack. (Although to be fair, that could be because I normally set my FPS limit to 30 when I'm on my laptop, and 1.6.4 doesn't have a Max Framerate setting.)

That's just one of Microsoft first step to kill off the Java version so the community would move on to the crossplay edition which... guess what?
has the "community" marketplace. I wouldn't be surprised if they banned maps and mods distribution without paying Microsoft.
This is the reason why i hated Microsoft bought Mojang. They're just a greedy company who squeezed a franchise and then throw it in the garbage.
Good bye Minecraft, you'll suffer the same fate as Rareware.
That's a nice Conspiracy Theory you got there. Care to give us any proof, and not just insults? (As much as I dislike companies with little passion or moral for their work too, shouting, swearing and insults are the results of having no arguments to give.)
Now, of course, this mission could fail miserably, but have some hope. If Microsoft wants to devote themselves to this cause, then maybe giving them money through the form of a Marketplace, or buying new copies of the game is exactly what we want to do in order to make this a reality.

Like others have said, you seem very elitist concerning Java. But soon, it's only advantage over other platforms will be with mapmaking and partially, lack of a marketplace (whether that's an advantage or not is debatable). So people will still have a reason to buy/play Java edition... for now. If you and your pro buddies want to stay on Java just to say you don't associate with the ""inferior"" clones, then go ahead.

Console Battle is two games rolled into one: gambling (whether or not you get one of the OP weapons) and betting (which teammate won't turn on you, since teaming is pretty much a requirement to kill off another team)! Of course, it's not all chance; at its core, Battle is about triumphing and defeating other players... by kicking them out if they win to make yourself feel better.

Well, Microsoft ruined the company Rareware by buying their company. Link
So i highly doubt Microsoft won't screw this game.
Heck Microsoft are even the ones who did controversial things to Minecraft which could be a sign to the franchise demise:
1. Notch left Mojang
2. controversial updates (like 1.9 combat which no one asked for)
3. how lacklustre the update become (cough... 1.10)
4. Minecraft story mode which is just a terrible cash grab for Microsoft
5. the Marketplace (oh hey! you got a content that was for free in java. Well guess what, Microsoft is greedy enough to make them PAID)
6. server blacklisting (seriously microsoft? arkham network was a good server. Oh well, they made a custom launcher which bypass the blacklist. screw you microsoft. you deserved it.)

Did Microsoft say they wanted any of those companies to last 100 years? Did they make any promises with any of those products?

4. Minecraft story mode which is just a terrible cash grab for Microsoft People enjoyed it, though. What's the difference between a cash grab and a reasonable way to make profit?
5. the Marketplace (oh hey! you got a content that was for free in java. Well guess what, Microsoft is greedy enough to make them PAID) I don't like the Marketplace either, but to be fair, Microsoft does need the money to run the Marketplace, and if they want to make Minecraft a 100 year game, they need to sell more content to people that have already bought the game.
6. server blacklisting (seriously microsoft? arkham network was a good server. Oh well, they made a custom launcher which bypass the blacklist. screw you microsoft. you deserved it.) Likely not because of Microsoft.

I am shocked when Mojang tries to change the original java version of Minecraft name into Minecraft: Java Edition.
And that other platform gets the appropriate name 'Minecraft' only because... crossplay feature?
This may seem like a small problem, but trust me. This is bad for the future of the og java version.
If Java Minecraft renamed to 'Minecraft: Java Edition' and not just 'Minecraft' then the og version will felt inferior.
It is also very inconvenient to say the name of a game based of the game engine.
So, my solution:
Leave the Java Minecraft name into just "Minecraft"
and other platform, because they have crossplay feature. Make their name into: Minecraft: Crossplay Edition
Therefore we will all still feel as if Java Minecraft IS the Minecraft that pros will play. And will always be superior than any other platform.
