I remember when we were all talking about how to make the Ender Dragon fight less monotonous. We talked about the Xbox version as well, and the Xbox version is what ended up in the PC version too, which is good. However, there are still some things that I just don't get about the fight.
Problem #1
When the Ender Dragon flies to the center of the island, she just stops. Like, she doesn't decelerate; she just STOPS. Like, she is moving really fast at one point, and then she just literally halts in midair when she gets to the portal, and then flaps around her wings without propelling herself anywhere. While it doesn't matter whether movements looks realistic or not, the way the dragon just freezes its horizontal (and vertical) travel at that point looks really unnatural, and the majority of her majestic movements are fluid and realistic, so it's inconsistent where she just stops at the end portal when she was originally making really realistic and cool looking movements. This should be fixed easily.
Problem #2
This is also to do with when the Ender Dragon flies to the central portal, however it relates to gameplay, not aesthetics. Once she stops, she then starts spewing ender acid in front of her, which deals lots of damage. However, this only goes over a certain area, and the dragon's head doesn't follow you around to attack you with acid. This means that this is the prime chance for you to go in and deal lots of damage to the Ender Dragon with a melee attack. I like this part of the battle since it makes it much less tedious, because you can actually deal some damage. HOWEVER... while the dragon doesn't spew acid if you aren't within 50 blocks of her, she doesn't TRY to HIT YOU, at all. She goes down, then stays facing the same direction as she did when she flew in, and spews ender acid in that direction, not turning to face you, completely ignoring your devastating attacks.
My idea is that when you are near the dragon and she is breathing ender acid, every 4 seconds she should swerve around to face you. She wouldn't swerve instantly, so you would be able to run out of the way for you to avoid the dragon's breath, although you'd have to be prepared to do so, otherwise you would just be hit with a splash of the acid, which is really powerful. Speaking of this power, I also believe that the acid should deal a bit less damage than it does now, since you are more likely to be hit with it, and at the moment it's completely devastating if you're in it for more than half a second. It should deal 2.5 hearts of damage per half-second rather than 3.
Problem #3
This is not much of a problem, but, why does the dragon go to the middle at all? It makes no sense. If she wanted to use her acid breath she could just charge down and use it on you. Obviously that would be completely OP, but it still raises the question, why does she go down to the portal? It seems like she does it purely for the purpose of letting you hit her. Purely for the balancing of the boss fight. It makes no sense at all, it makes me cringe when I see it happen.
At least with my idea she would actually somewhat attempt to defend while in this helpless state, and make her going down to the portal more logical. Only an idiot would not know to avoid the dragon's head when she swoops down to the portal frame, so making her briefly turn to you every few seconds would add some more challenge to this, and you'd still be able to avoid damage if you are good, so it wouldn't be OP.
I am not trying to bash Mojang at all here, and I am quite happy with how the fight is now. I'm really glad that the terrible dragon fight from 1.8 and before was changed to how the Xbox fight was, which is way more exciting and not exactly easier OR harder, but more enjoyable. However parts of the fight are just illogical and a bit too easy. I want to fix this. Anyways, thanks for reading my suggestion, let me know what you think in the replies and if you have any suggestions for how to improve the idea. Have a nice day!
I have to agree, with everything here, though I do have a suggestion. Maybe when the dragon comes down to the ground, the texture on her wings can show some tears, and maybe she could land on the ground, showing that her wings are damaged and excusing her for coming to the ground.
Yes, all of these problems listed are quite valid, considering that it just seems un-natural when the Ender Dragon just... stops like that. Also, the fight could use the extra difficulty.
- Maybe reduce it's health points to allow making make the battle more hard and exciting but still less "grindy".
- Instead of being able to predict the breath weapon attack based on some arbitrary and nonsensical location, make the dragon able to breath anywhere, but give the player a clear "tell' that the next attack is going to be a breath weapon attack. Heck, it could even something as simple be making the dragon's life bar blink a few times a few seconds before doing it or something just as easy to code in.
- I'd rather the breath weapon be a little bit less devastating, but that the dragon can catch you more times with it.

I was actually expecting people to reply saying something like "I think that the fight is already perfect and that these changes are unneeded" or "if it hit you multiple times with its breath then it would be OP" but instead I got your support comments. A pleasant surprise. I agree that the acid breath should deal a little less damage, since it covers a wide area and if it sometimes turned around to hit you then you'd be pretty screwed unless you had super fast reaction time. I just don't want it being really easy to dodge the attacks. The fact that the dragon only ever attacks in a specific area and never changes that just makes it basically impossible for any skilled player to even take any hits of the acid breath, which is a shame. Right now it provides more of an 'area of death' rather than an actual practical attack. So, the damage should be lowered, but the dragon should turn to face you every 3 seconds or something, so you could actually get hit. This would make the fight more dangerous. It is a bit too easy at the moment, but at least it's not tedious like the old dragon fight.
The Dragon is fine the it he is. It's a bit hard for me to defeat (especially the cages on two of the pillars). If it never went to the return portal then that would be too hard. And if he were to turn to faster while next to the portal, that would be a lot harder in my opinion. I mean, he can already knock you far away while hitting him while he's flying next to the portal (and if you're not skilled enough with water buckets, you may die).

That part is quite difficult, but this suggestion would not affect that part in any way.

I wasn't trying to suggest that she doesn't go to the portal, because that would definitely be too hard, and make the fight more monotonous like it used to be. The fight definitely needs that period of the dragon being easily hit.
And if he were to turn to faster while next to the portal, that would be a lot harder in my opinion.
She doesn't turn faster, she just turns. And it would only be every 3-4 seconds, which would probably be only once every time she goes to the portal, because she doesn't stay there for that long. (The Ender Dragon is female btw)
I mean, he can already knock you far away while hitting him while he's flying next to the portal (and if you're not skilled enough with water buckets, you may die).
I think that this only happens if you try to shoot her with a bow. The only way she hits you far away is if you are in front of her (where you wouldn't be, because of the ender acid breath), because she only flies away forwards in the direction that she is facing.

Did you really have to put this in such a massive text size?

There's already behavior to account for when a player isn't close when the dragon lands. When the dragon lands and there isn't a player within 50 blocks, she immediately charges at you instead as soon as she leaves this phase. Arguably, not getting near the dragon when she lands makes the fight harder because now you have to deal with an unstoppable dragon flying in your direction (arrows don't deflect her anymore) that will take most of your health away and knock you into the air. She does linger at the portal for too long before she decides to charge you, but she's immune to arrows in this phase so it's not like she's vulnerable.

If she didn't land on the portal then we would have another boring bow spam fest that lasts forever. She lands for the specific purpose of letting you do damage and making sure the fight doesn't drag on forever.

I can see where you got that from, but, I didn't suggest that she doesn't go to the portal at all, because I know that would be OP since you wouldn't have any chance to go in for melee attacks. The idea is to make her not completely helpless in that state, because it doesn't make any sense why she would just fly down to the portal and stop, and breath acid in specific certain direction that doesn't take into account where you are at all. If it was because she was tired, she would still do it even if you were over 50 blocks away, yet she charges at you after that, so she must be physically capable of turning around once when you are attacking her.
On Reddit, Notch referred to the ender dragon as a she, and suggested her name to be "Jean?" in the same manner he called the Player "Steve?".[5][/sup]
Dinnerbone later stated that he thinks the name is officially "Jean?"[6][/sup]
The Xbox avatar item 'Ender Dragon Pet' has the description 'A
cuter, friendlier version of his bigger, less playful Minecraft
sister.'- revealing that the ender dragon is female.
Also, she lays an egg after she dies. Only females lay eggs.
I think it's a good suggestion. The fight doesn't seem to be engaging enough, and it's kinda long and boring. (Says the girl who dies repeatedly even way back when it was stupidly easy...)
