The lance is a weapon designed for use on horseback. It appears and acts as if it is three blocks long. Holding left click activates it, otherwise it's raised vertically in the air. In order to use it, you must charge someone and insure that your cursor is pointed at them as soon as they come into range. It does no damage to anyone who gets too close (you can't swing the lance into someone less than three blocks away and hurt them, they have to be hit by the point).
Its damage and knockback are dependent on how fast the horse is moving. If the horse is moving at maximum speed, it does maximum damage and knockback. If it's going half speed, it does half damage and knockback. This is regardless of different horse speeds.
At maximum speed:
Gold/Wood: 7 () damage, 1 extra block of knockback.
Stone: 8 () damage, 2 extra blocks of knockback.
Iron: 9 () damage, 3 extra blocks of knockback.
Diamond: 10 () damage, 4 extra blocks of knockback.
The trade-off is that it's harder to aim on a horse.
Off of a horse it does ½ damage/knockback at sprinting speed, and only ¼ knockback (no damage) at walking speed.
It shares all enchantments with swords. All current sword enchantments work and seem balanced with this. No new enchantment is necessary just for lances.
(Replace the ingots with the appropriate material.)
Durability of all items in the game based on material:
Gold - 33 uses
Wood - 60 uses
Stone - 132 uses
Iron - 251 uses
Diamond - 1562 uses
Thanks to Cerroz for helping me out with this beforehand.
Oh, finally a weapon with a unique twist. No scale tipping, reasonable practice. I would however recommend adding in some swing damage, if only for the fact that you're bludgeoning with a giant stick after some point.
Please bear in mind that I know of 2 definitions of lance:
Standard jousting lance, used to dismount opposing riders in a joust
A powerful blade attached to the end of a pole. In many cases, more like swords than spears; though classified as polearms nonetheless.

The reason I didn't is because you could then just wave it back and forth to constantly push back whole waves of enemies, which would be easy since turning is as easy as slightly pushing the mouse. It doesn't use the standard cooldown to keep itself balanced, and removing the knockback but not the damage seems weird. Plus, it balances out the whole "doing more damage than a diamond sword and knocking back people really really far, especially with enchantments."
For the purposes of this suggestion it has the use of the first with the deadliness of the second.
I had an idea like this, though it was a little different. I support this but I have a question, would it always do full damage if the horse is at full speed no matter what speed it is? If you get a super slow horse and it goes at full speed it would deal a lot of damage, right? And does it working donkeys and mules?
I see where you're coming from with the lance not being useful too close, though tradional lances can "pummel" (hit someone with the hilt) at very close range. If i may suggest a kind of blind spot:
Left click to swing/charge (high damage, long range, targets must be [3.5 or 4] - 2.5 meters)
Right click to pummel (Half sword damage, max range 1 meter)
So if an enemy stays >1,<2.5m they can attack you without being hit back. Little more strategy. Up to you, naturally. Just a suggestion.

Yes. The idea is that you have to be on a moving horse for it to be effective. If you're on a fast horse, it's harder to avoid you but your aim is less accurate. If you're on a slow horse people can see you coming and dodge out of the way. And forward momentum on a horse is hard to stop regardless of speed.
I don't see a problem with it working with donkeys and mules. I think it'd look silly, but there's no real reason not to let you do that. Maybe it'd work with sprinting pigs too, as ridiculous as that is.
How about Diamond or Golden ones to match up with the other Horse Armours, too?
How would Shields be affected by Lances?
Now I want a Banner on a stick to hold while riding a horse.
I can already imagine the Lances protruding out of walls and roofs.
I agree with Yoshi9048's proposal of including an alternative "swing" attack, but only if it's a close range one with the strike of the handle.
Copying every Sword enchantment seems a bit too... well, copy and pasted for my liking.
Overall, I think this suggestion is a-okay: I've always wanted a more unique Horse combat.
All tiers would be are lesser-or-greater-powered versions of the same thing. There is no significant difference. I didn't think it important enough to talk about. I guess there would be tiers? Because everything else does? But if that's so, I'd give diamond lances the stats you see above. If more people ask about this enough then I'll do something about it, but right now I still consider it unimportant to the suggestion.
Lances are the same against shields as swords are: knockback, but no damage.
I'm not going to come up with new enchantments for it. It's simply not different enough from a sword to have unique enchantments.
Oh, I misread that, I was referring to a left-click swing component. Would that be disabled? Or would there be some damage to that?
There isn't a swing. The lance sticks up vertically when equipped, so you don't hurt things unintentionally just by walking around. When you hold left click (attack), it sticks the lance out in front of you, doing damage to whatever you run into. If you release left click, you hold it vertically again.
This isn't valid criticism. You might as well just say "it's bad because it's bad, support = nah"

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
This suggestion has some issues. How will damage and knockback be calculated if you have a slow horse going at max speed? Also, how much durability does the Lance have for each tier of materials, if we can craft the Lance out of other materials? Likewise, is the damage different depending on the material you used to craft it? Oh, and making the Lance have all of the enchantments that the sword could have is a bit "copy and paste" in my opinion. Perhaps you could make up some new enchantments for the Lance?

Max speed of the horse compared to other horses is irrelevant. See my above comment. Max damage is always the same regardless of horse.
I am aware of the 'tier issue,' but I don't consider it a real issue or problem. The stats you see would belong to diamond. Take a point of damage and a block of knockback off for iron, stone, and wood/gold, and that'd work. All tiered items have the same durability. I will work it into the actual suggestion sometime soon.
No, having all the enchantments of the sword is non-wasteful. I don't need to make up bogus enchantments when the game already has all the ones you could ever need. I did put some thought into it before I wrote that down, you know.
No support? As opposed to partial support? What's wrong with the actual idea that you wouldn't support any of it?

it is. that's just simply putting it. I could also say, that item is so unoriginal, there are like 1000000 (a million) suggestions for lances on the forums. its also overpowered, 10 damage? you might as well say that zombies always drop diamonds. no support.

Is the idea too horrendous to ever be good, or is it just that one damage issue that's holding it back?

Damage as an issue? When you think about it you can't attack that often for this weapon at its full potenial,Otherwise the sword and axe are stronger than this with enchantments as they can attack more often, and more easily
-I give support for basic skilled weps, although I would like this to require more skill to use, ie timing when you bring down the lance to attack attributes to its potential damage or knockback, or both

Just because it's suggested a lot doesn't mean it can't ever be good. If it's balanced, if it works, then it doesn't matter how many failures there were before it. Check the Hall of Fame in the Please Read This stickied thread for examples.
10 damage, if you can precisely hit someone with the point, on a hard-to-control fast animal with lots of momentum, with little opportunity to do it quickly and repeatedly. I do not believe this is overpowered. The comment below explains it in a different way.

I think attempting to control the horse in any given terrain and aim at the same time is enough of a skill cap. Especially when I'm trying to keep the mechanic simple to fit with the rest of the game's mechanics. It's not the same skill as the timing mechanic requires, but I think it's one more suited to horses.

We'll know what you say when you say "overpowered", but "unoriginal" doesn't really prove anything. Even suggestions in the hall of fame have had similar threads before them. I'm kinda disappointed that you got 2 upvotes for that post. I wish people would give some thought into what posts they give +rep to...

"unoriginal and overpowered. no support."
Unoriginal? No, because it's the first weapon for Horses.
Overpowered? Well, it can only be used a Horse, with the right terrain, and someone could easily put down blocks as defence, but it might be.
When I give this more thought, I can imagine people doing sharp turns at "close" range to the player in a figure 8 pattern to hit them really frequently. There is no law saying that you need a long running start, and a horse has only 1 speed (Full speed): You can't do 25% or 50%, it's always 100%, so yes: This is over powered! You need to remedy this. Perhaps this calls for a long cool down.

If you don't like it when people don't support a suggestion because of Issues that they point out, then don't make a suggestion. All because you have a good amount of attention doesn't mean that you decide whether or not people can support your idea or not.
