For 5 years I’ve heard people asking for “Tamable Dragons” In VMC. (I’m one of them) Now I know what you’re thinking. Dragons! For Vanilla Minecraft? This thing Again? Flight is too “Over Powered”!!! BUT…
It’s not flight that’s Over Powered, but the thought of ENDLESS flight that would be too OP
This is thought to be because Horses, Mules & Donkeys would no longer be useful anymore. Although it wouldn’t be entirely true if we had Wagons (For traveling purposes (You could bring about (any) 6 blocks with you)) and chariots (For stronger attacks (The faster you go) &/or to bring 1 of any block with you). Hiiinnt, hiiinnt! No?
(You can ignore that last sentence)
Ok. Getting back to the point…
What if we had TDs (Tamable Dragons) that aren’t too OP?
Now, before you could get TDs you’ll need to defeat the End Dragon X4 (Every time you defeat the End Dragon X4: 5 Dragons will have a 60% chance of spawning in the Over World (In non-loaded chunks)) (This is to make them rare enough so that their not too OP) (This is just 1 reason)
NOTE:
TDs would be a bit smaller than the End Dragon, are not as Strong as the End Dragon and can't break Blocks. They would also the Damage would NOT be as affective to use against the Ender Dragon as a Diamond Sword. (And TDs won't be affected by the End Portal block)

Types:
(“Tamable Dragons” are a bit smaller than the “Ender Dragon”)
(Just for fun) There could be 4 different Variants of TDs.
Igneous/Fire, (Blows/Shoots fire & can shoot lightning & can’t Burn).
Aqua/Water, (Spits/Shoots a Guardian’s harming/mining fatigue ray & can shoot Ice & don’t need Air (You can breathe under water while riding them)).
Terra/Thorns (Coughs/Shoots Dirt (With a temporary fogy affect) & can shoot Stone Shards/spikes & have more Health).
& Eris/Air. (Gasps/shoots Poison & can shoot a Shulker’s Levitation Projectile (With a 3 block knockback) & are Faster).
Each Dragon has 15 Hearts of Health (Except for the TERRA/THORNS VARIANT that has 20-25) & 15 Bars of Hunger. They also have 3 more Oxygen Bobbles than you (Except for the AQUA/WATER VARIANT that doesn’t have or need any Bobbles).
They also have an Attack Meter right on top of the Health & Hunger Bars, with the altitude over it (The distance between the Dragon and the closest block under you).
These Dragons can turn into Zombie Variants as well, and can spawn with a Skeleton Variant to! So there would actually be 12 Variants. Plus! If the Ender Dragon hits your Dragon with “Dragon’s breath”, it will turn into an Ender Dragon (Only in the End). (To encourage people to not use dragons in the End) That’s a total of 13 Dragons PLUS the random colors they come in! (Not including Zombie & Skeletal types (Except for the Zombie Dragons eyes))
Finding:
(Can ONLY spawn AFTER you beat the “Ender Dragon” and used up your “Elytra” Glider and get 500 XP (You would get ONE 500 XP Achievement)) For the first test they could be added to the game through a “summon” command (Snapshots). (“Commands” can be used to change its attributes)
To find these Dragons would be rare, with only a small chance of spawning. They can also spawn with or without their front legs. (The Body, Eyes, Scales/Spine, Horns, Wings and the Wings interior’s Colors would be random)
Igneous/Fire: (Spawn in HOT BIOMES &/or the NETHER around/close to Mob Spawners.
They will attack you on site and love to flap their wings & fly).
Aqua/Water: (Spawn in COLD BIOMES &/or in OCEANS around Temples or Igloos.
They will flee from you and love to swim & turn water into temporary Ice).
Terra/Thorns: (Spawn in FOREST BIOMES in wide open areas.
They will sometimes shoot Dirt at you and love to Jump & push).
Eris/Air: (Spawn in (FLAT) COLD or PLANES BIOMES or End (Far outer lands and only a 1% chance of spawn) flying in the air.
They will shoot you with a Levitation Projectile if you fail to tame it and loves to fly and shoot Levitation Projectiles to mobs in a Hostile state (Except for animals)). This last bit would encourage people to go DRAGON SLAYER.
Skeletons & Zombies can spawn on top of them 2.
Taming:
To tame a Tamable Dragon would be different for each Variant.
Igneous/Fire: (The hardest to tame (Do to their Hostile nature and Flaming Breath), and require you to use Golden Apples or Golden Carets to calm them down for a while (Enchanted Golden/Notch Apples will calm them down for good). Once calmed down, you’ll need to feed them any type of COOKED MEAT and click on their Torso with a Saddle to finish taming it (Be careful not to feed them NON COOKED MEAT before you tame them, or they will become hostile again)).
Aqua/Water: (The Second Hardest to tame (Do to their fearful nature) Golden Apples or Golden Carets can also calm it down for a while (Enchanted Golden/Notch Apples Will calm them down for good). After it’s calmed down, feed it 64 of any FISH to add the Saddle).
Terra/Thorns: (Feed them any Golden Apple or Golden Carets, then any Stone, Rotten flesh, then any Crop to add the Saddle).
Eris/Air: (Feed them any Golden Apple or Golden Carets, then click on their Torso 3 times with your hand and lean wherever direction their flying towards (For a short random while)).
KILLING a Dragon would give you the “Dragon Slayer” Achievement (Worth 6-8 XP) for every Variant.
TAMING a Dragon would give you the "Dragon Rider" Achievement (Worth 5-7 XP) for every Variant.
Flying:
To FLY these fantastic creatures, just click the saddle to get on like you would a horse (You can get the saddle back form the Inventory. BUT you won’t be able to interact with the dragon while sitting down) then Hold the “Jump” Button to lift off.
Tap the “Jump” Button to flap your wings and stay airborne (You’ll sometimes start to loose altitude at random times).
Click the “Turn Left” Button to turn left & click the “Turn Right” to turn right. Click the “Go Forward” Button to go up (the longer you hold, the more you face strait Up & Fly up faster) & click the “Go Backward” Button to go down (The longer you hold, the more you face strait down & fly Down faster (Dangerous)).
Hold the “Jump” Button to do a “Barrel Roll” (You go slower, BUT you can fly through smaller spaces by tuck-in your wings) & Hold the “Jump” & “Go Forward” Button to “Flip Backward over/Dodge” Other Dragons behind you or “Dodge” Arrows. (You have to be at least 9 blocks of the ground to do this)
You can’t fly if your wings don’t have enough space to open completely! (20x15 block space needed.) And you can’t fly dragons for any more than 0.8-3 minutes. And if your Dragons health is anywhere less than half way, flight will be diminished to less than 1 minute. You’ll have an “Energy Meter” to tell you how long you have left Before the Dragon stops flying of energy drain. You can fill it back up by waiting 1 MC day, or feeding them Zombie Flesh to speed up the process. And they can’t fly if their Health is to low (10%). (Dragons will need to get back to Full Health before they can get their “Energy Meter” to fill back up)
NOTE: Some Dragons can fly longer than others. (Some Dragons have a longer “Energy Meter”), BUT you can change the Length/Flight time of each Dragon by using Commands. (The same way you can change/choose the Variants (Like you would with the Horses Speed))
Worming: If you’re riding a Dragon, and the Dragon your flying dies or your flight limit is at 0%, you might fall to your death! (Elytra recommended) & “Tamable Dragons” fly 20-50% slower than using the “Elytra” Glider unless you’re holding the “Sprint” Button. (This will use up your “Energy Meter” and will slow down your “Attack Meter”) or use commands to change this attribute.
Fighting:
Each Dragon variant has its own unique fighting ability, but the basics are all the same.
You’ll have a Power/Attack meter that you’ll need to look at to achieve your stronger attacks (Much like the Horses “Jump Meter”). Hold your “Attack” Button to use tour ability (The attack meter will start to fill up until you let go of the Button or until it reaches the end of the meter. Afterwards, it will start to go back down (Once the meter starts to go down form the end of the meter, you’ll have to wait until the meter goes back down, to use the Dragon Attacks, BUT you can still break blocks and/or fight like you would with a Horse while waiting for the meter to go back down)). Let go of the “Attack” Button after your meter reaches 80% to Use a stronger attack.
Igneous/Fire:
Regular Attack: Blows/Shoots fire. (Will linger where it hits if it doesn’t hit an Entity)
Powered Attack: Shoots lightning). (The same amount of Damage as Lightning)
Aqua/Water:
Regular Attack: Spits/Shoots a Guardian’s harming/mining fatigue ray. (Same amount of Damage as a Guardian’s harming/mining fatigue ray)
Powered Attack: Shoots Ice or Ice Shards. (5 ½ Hearts of Damage & a Slowness affect)
Terra/Thorns:
Regular Attack: Coughs/Shoots Dirt or Thorns. (3 ½ Hearts of Damage & a temporary Fogy/Blindness affect)
Powered Attack: Shoot Stone Shards/spikes. (7 Hearts of Damage)
& Eris/Air:
Regular Attack: Gasps/shoots Poison. (The same amount of Damage as a Poison affect)
Powered Attack: Shoot a Shulker’s Levitation Projectile (With a 3 block knockback). (The same amount of Damage as a Shulker’s Levitation Projectile)
But every time that you kill 30 Entities with your Dragon, you will lose 1 XP. (Hostiles are worth 2-3 Entity kills) (You can get an Achievement for Dragon kills for each variant and (Wild) Dragon Slaying)
Breading: Still progressing

Customization: You don't need to read this.
(You can customize your Dragons Only in creative mode.)
To Customize a Dragon, you’ll need dyes to change the parts of the Dragon (The Body, Eyes, Scales/Spine, Horns, Wings and the Wings interiors) according to the colored dye you use. (Click the part of the Dragon that you want to change the color of with the dye of your color of choice)
My thoughts: You don't need to read this.
The reason I didn’t add “Dragon Armor” is because it would be too OP. and I added Variants to make them more fun to play around with. And sense you would expect DRAGONS to breathe Fire, I desisted to add some combat mechanics. These might be over powered, but I would be disappointed if they could only fly.
I personally don’t see Constant Flight as too OP, but I can see why others might see otherwise. I guess my Asperger doesn’t let me. But the only reason I can think of that would make Constant Flight too OP would be that Horses wouldn’t be as useful. But that makes me think about the fact that you can ride Pigs too, BUT they aren’t as useful as horses (If of any use). Except Horses would still be useful, especially if they fix the ability to add chests to your horses.
I think that instead of having Dragons that you can fly forever, that you’ll should have a time limit, as well as Danger. But I also thought that because their “Dragons” that they should be able to shoot FIRE, and maybe even Ice. I think that this aspect would make them more fun to use. And worth it for the “Gold Apples” that I thought would help UN OP them a bit. (I think that you should be able you Toggle this with “Commands”)
For the Fighting aspect of them, I thought would be a good Idea to add STRONGER attacks that would be harder to do but cause more damage, and different Variants of attacks each with their own use and purpose.
I also think that they would also be great for “Hunger Games” and “Team Wars”, as well as “Custom Maps” and “Structures” and also Movie Based Creations that recommend Dragons.
And YES. I’ve been asking and talking to people (Friends, Family and Strangers) and having LONG discussions about what they would think if Tamable Dragons where added to the Game. Most if not everybody thought and/or Sayed that would be “COOL”, “GREAT”, “Awesome” and “Fun”. But Most didn’t seemed to care about OPF (Over Powered Flight). If any, But I know that people in these threads might think the same way but wouldn’t want other people’s Ideas of Dragons if they’re not specific enough about their vision. So I hope that this thread isn’t too “vague”, (if vague) and is specific enough for you.
If you’re wondering about why I think that it would be a great idea toned “Netherwart” to get them to bread. It’s because a lot of people see them as unholy creatures. (Well, At least the Catholic people and a couple of other people I know)
I don’t really care too much about the variant attacks, so I’m not sure if you’d like me to change their Damage.
It seems like even though people want “Tamable Dragons added to the game! But will look for any reason to go against Threads for Tamable Dragons. But I can see why. People don’t just want Tamable Dragons added to the game! But the perfect Tamable Dragon Idea for VMC. Witch I agree would be a good idea, but it also shows negativity towards the Idea of Tamable Dragons.
That is why I’ve decided to try to create an Idea for the perfect “Tamable Dragons” (Well, close enough ). (This Idea is still a working progress. But I don’t know what I should change)

10 minutes of uninterrupted flight is insanely OP, even if you have to wait 15 minutes for it to recharge. Flight means no obstacles, straight lines to destinations, which means covering thousands of blocks, or tens of thousands using the Nether (which would admittedly be slower due to smaller spaces). I have to assume they fly about as fast as a Horse runs, so it could cover about 8500 blocks befor needing to stop.
On top of that giving it attacks is overkill. The dragons do have low health which is good but I don't think any flight beyond the Elytra can be balanced.

It's still overpowered. There's a reason there's only one (untameable) dragon in the game, and no direct-attack potions or enchantments; being able to hurl fire and lightning unbalances every aspect of combat. Similarly, unlimited flight is only in Creative because it unbalances Survival. The Elytra is the closest thing we're going to get, and it's not only a complete end-game item, it's not even real flight. As much as I like dragons, they just don't fit.

Based on your responses: What if Flight was no more than 3 Minutes & takes 1 MC Day to charge up the "Energy Meter" and fighting with Dragons took 10xp for every kill?
What if "Tamable Dragons" could only spawn after you've defeated the "End Dragon" and have them a little smaller than the "End Dragon"?
And maybe a "Dragon Slayer" achievement for every variant. And every time you kill a Tamable Dragon you get 8xp?

Yea, flight time should only be a few minutes. Other than minecraft not handling these things too well, you would be able to easily escape from an engagement.
If they are only 3 minutes of flight and 20 minutes to recharge then there wouldn't really be much point in having them because it would be easier to just make permanent ways to get to local things. I just don't think it can be implemented in a balanced way regardless of how long the the flight and recharge times are. I think that this would be too big of a feature to just drop in the game and a lot of things would need to be changed to accommodate it.

I don't like this idea, it's suggested quite a lot and I feel that it wouldn't fit in minecraft. AHen you get a dragon than you don't need to explore the end to find the elytra, because the dragon can fly. I also don't like their fighting or customization or types, no support.

You can ONLY get Tamable Dragons If you've defeated the End Dragon.
The Elytra Can fly for a longer period of time, but is harder to maintain flight.
My idea for Tamable Dragons cant fly for more than 1-2 minutes before you have to wait 5 minutes to use it again.
Yeah, I know, so you can just beat the dragon take the egg and leave the end.
Its not that hard to maintain flight, and if it lets you fly farther and longer it's better.

Also, Why? We don't need more ways of being transported, we got ender pearls, elytra, horses, minecrats, slime blocks and our own legs.
Other reason of why I dont like this idea is because I can't really think of a good way to park him somewhere, would it just be there waiting for you? Would it fight every single mob or let himself be killed? Also, I think the dragon is meant to be an epic boss, found only in the end, to make that dimension more unique.

The Ender Dragon was never meant to be the only one added to the game. The developers planed on adding red dragons that you could tame. the only reason that they weren't added was because they where too OP for the gameplay, and people wouldn't want to go to the End to beat the Dragon. (Sense killing the Ender Dragon at the End wouldn't be any different than killing Dragons in the over world, nor would their be any reason to kill the End Dragon. (Unlike my idea)).

All of what they've said. Sure, it may be more convenient flight than Elytra being that you wouldn't have to use Punch 2 or the -40, 40 degree trick, but also being able to shoot fire? Unbelievable. Not to mention that the ED is still pretty easy, so what would keep you from farming TD's and getting a lot of them? Even if it's really rare, rare does NOT mean it's balanced. Also, breeding issues. Very overpowered.
The "every 30 kills" XP loss would be broken- XP is not hard to come by. You would need 289 XP orbs to get to level 17, and that would lead to 8670 technical "mob" kills. Even with the 2-3 hostile mob count for killing, that's still a minimum of 2890 hostile mob kills. At level 17.
Also about dragon armor: We don't need a new tier. We have plenty of armor already, and just because it's rare doesn't make it balanced.

They'll have to code the dragons from zero then, if the dragon is too big for the end portal, then it is bigger than a horse, and they dont have to actually ''fit into the portal'' to enter, they just touch the block and boom, they're in, shooting lighting is too op and chaotical, and flying while doing that... sorry, there's no way you can get this idea to be good inside my mind, sorry

Types: That's cool, that makes it kind of like horses.
Finding: I like that you tried to make it so that you would need to find an Elytra first, but forcing the player to use it up is pointless. Also, achievements don't and shouldn't give you XP. The front leg spawning is unnecessary.
Taming: I think you should come up with a new method for taming. Simply feeding them food is not very interesting. Revamp that part by adding a new item or method for dragon taming.
Flying: This is where things start to get complicated. In singleplayer, unlimited flight is fine; you've effectively "beaten" the game at this point. Even still, this should be changed. Perhaps closer to Skyward Sword-style flight mixed with Elytra. You constantly lose altitude, however, you can press the jump button to flap your wings and gain some altitude. This takes up some stamina. Stamina slowly recovers over time, but once it runs out, the dragon will be unable to flap its wings or recover any stamina until it lands. In addition, mechanics like nose-diving can be used to speed you up and increase the distance you can fly without consuming stamina. This makes flying more skill based and helps to differentiate it from other forms of transportation. Once a dragon lands, it can't fly again until its stamina fully replenishes, which, for balance reasons, takes longer than normal. If a dragon's stamina is 80% depleted, it takes four minutes to replenish.
Fighting: I actually don't like this part. However, if it is implemented, it should consume stamina, to make you think carefully about using your dragon for battle. Stronger attacks would consume more stamina. This cost is enough to remove the XP cost.
Breeding: Yeah, breeding would be overpowered. You can create an army of dragons while trying to get the perfect mount.
Customization: That's cool and all, but I personally think editing should just be performed through /entitydata, so a whole new interface/mechanic isn't required.
So, this can be balanced for singleplayer usage easily enough. But multiplayer is another thing. Some new guy comes onto a server and is obliterated by some guy raining death from above on his dragon. Actually, come to think about it, the same thing can happen if a new guy runs into someone with diamond equipment. Thus, a new guy would just have to come up with strategies to survive in these cases.
Main problem for me is, we have no precedent. It will be difficult to make this fit into the game, as we don't have any other mythological friendly creatures.
Overall though, I do like it. I'll give it 70% Support.

I'd love more dragons to be added to MC, but I have to agree that outside of mods, I really can't see tamable dragons being able to be balanced enough to make it into vanilla. That said, it still is a cool idea you have

This is thought to be because Horses, Mules & Donkeys would no longer be useful anymore. Although it wouldn’t be entirely true if we had Wagons (For traveling purposes (You could bring about (any) 6 blocks with you)) and chariots (For stronger attacks (The faster you go) &/or to bring 1 of any block with you). Hiiinnt, hiiinnt! No?

Ok. Getting back to the point…
What if we had TDs (Tamable Dragons) that aren’t too OP?
Now, before you could get TDs you’ll need to defeat the End Dragon X4 (Every time you defeat the End Dragon X4: 5 Dragons will have a 60% chance of spawning in the Over World (In non-loaded chunks)) (This is to make them rare enough so that their not too OP) (This is just 1 reason)
NOTE:
TDs would be a bit smaller than the End Dragon, are not as Strong as the End Dragon and can't break Blocks. They would also the Damage would NOT be as affective to use against the Ender Dragon as a Diamond Sword. (And TDs won't be affected by the End Portal block)

Types:
(“Tamable Dragons” are a bit smaller than the “Ender Dragon”)
(Just for fun) There could be 4 different Variants of TDs.
Igneous/Fire, (Blows/Shoots fire & can shoot lightning & can’t Burn).
Aqua/Water, (Spits/Shoots a Guardian’s harming/mining fatigue ray & can shoot Ice & don’t need Air (You can breathe under water while riding them)).
Terra/Thorns (Coughs/Shoots Dirt (With a temporary fogy affect) & can shoot Stone Shards/spikes & have more Health).
& Eris/Air. (Gasps/shoots Poison & can shoot a Shulker’s Levitation Projectile (With a 3 block knockback) & are Faster).
Each Dragon has 15 Hearts of Health (Except for the TERRA/THORNS VARIANT that has 20-25) & 15 Bars of Hunger. They also have 3 more Oxygen Bobbles than you (Except for the AQUA/WATER VARIANT that doesn’t have or need any Bobbles).
They also have an Attack Meter right on top of the Health & Hunger Bars, with the altitude over it (The distance between the Dragon and the closest block under you).
These Dragons can turn into Zombie Variants as well, and can spawn with a Skeleton Variant to! So there would actually be 12 Variants. Plus! If the Ender Dragon hits your Dragon with “Dragon’s breath”, it will turn into an Ender Dragon (Only in the End). (To encourage people to not use dragons in the End) That’s a total of 13 Dragons PLUS the random colors they come in! (Not including Zombie & Skeletal types (Except for the Zombie Dragons eyes))
Finding:
(Can ONLY spawn AFTER you beat the “Ender Dragon” and used up your “Elytra” Glider and get 500 XP (You would get ONE 500 XP Achievement)) For the first test they could be added to the game through a “summon” command (Snapshots). (“Commands” can be used to change its attributes)
To find these Dragons would be rare, with only a small chance of spawning. They can also spawn with or without their front legs. (The Body, Eyes, Scales/Spine, Horns, Wings and the Wings interior’s Colors would be random)
Igneous/Fire: (Spawn in HOT BIOMES &/or the NETHER around/close to Mob Spawners.
They will attack you on site and love to flap their wings & fly).
Aqua/Water: (Spawn in COLD BIOMES &/or in OCEANS around Temples or Igloos.
They will flee from you and love to swim & turn water into temporary Ice).
Terra/Thorns: (Spawn in FOREST BIOMES in wide open areas.
They will sometimes shoot Dirt at you and love to Jump & push).
Eris/Air: (Spawn in (FLAT) COLD or PLANES BIOMES or End (Far outer lands and only a 1% chance of spawn) flying in the air.
They will shoot you with a Levitation Projectile if you fail to tame it and loves to fly and shoot Levitation Projectiles to mobs in a Hostile state (Except for animals)). This last bit would encourage people to go DRAGON SLAYER.
Skeletons & Zombies can spawn on top of them 2.
Taming:
To tame a Tamable Dragon would be different for each Variant.
Igneous/Fire: (The hardest to tame (Do to their Hostile nature and Flaming Breath), and require you to use Golden Apples or Golden Carets to calm them down for a while (Enchanted Golden/Notch Apples will calm them down for good). Once calmed down, you’ll need to feed them any type of COOKED MEAT and click on their Torso with a Saddle to finish taming it (Be careful not to feed them NON COOKED MEAT before you tame them, or they will become hostile again)).
Aqua/Water: (The Second Hardest to tame (Do to their fearful nature) Golden Apples or Golden Carets can also calm it down for a while (Enchanted Golden/Notch Apples Will calm them down for good). After it’s calmed down, feed it 64 of any FISH to add the Saddle).
Terra/Thorns: (Feed them any Golden Apple or Golden Carets, then any Stone, Rotten flesh, then any Crop to add the Saddle).
Eris/Air: (Feed them any Golden Apple or Golden Carets, then click on their Torso 3 times with your hand and lean wherever direction their flying towards (For a short random while)).
KILLING a Dragon would give you the “Dragon Slayer” Achievement (Worth 6-8 XP) for every Variant.
TAMING a Dragon would give you the "Dragon Rider" Achievement (Worth 5-7 XP) for every Variant.
Flying:
To FLY these fantastic creatures, just click the saddle to get on like you would a horse (You can get the saddle back form the Inventory. BUT you won’t be able to interact with the dragon while sitting down) then Hold the “Jump” Button to lift off.
Tap the “Jump” Button to flap your wings and stay airborne (You’ll sometimes start to loose altitude at random times).
Click the “Turn Left” Button to turn left & click the “Turn Right” to turn right. Click the “Go Forward” Button to go up (the longer you hold, the more you face strait Up & Fly up faster) & click the “Go Backward” Button to go down (The longer you hold, the more you face strait down & fly Down faster (Dangerous)).
Hold the “Jump” Button to do a “Barrel Roll” (You go slower, BUT you can fly through smaller spaces by tuck-in your wings) & Hold the “Jump” & “Go Forward” Button to “Flip Backward over/Dodge” Other Dragons behind you or “Dodge” Arrows. (You have to be at least 9 blocks of the ground to do this)
You can’t fly if your wings don’t have enough space to open completely! (20x15 block space needed.) And you can’t fly dragons for any more than 0.8-3 minutes. And if your Dragons health is anywhere less than half way, flight will be diminished to less than 1 minute. You’ll have an “Energy Meter” to tell you how long you have left Before the Dragon stops flying of energy drain. You can fill it back up by waiting 1 MC day, or feeding them Zombie Flesh to speed up the process. And they can’t fly if their Health is to low (10%). (Dragons will need to get back to Full Health before they can get their “Energy Meter” to fill back up)
NOTE: Some Dragons can fly longer than others. (Some Dragons have a longer “Energy Meter”), BUT you can change the Length/Flight time of each Dragon by using Commands. (The same way you can change/choose the Variants (Like you would with the Horses Speed))
Worming: If you’re riding a Dragon, and the Dragon your flying dies or your flight limit is at 0%, you might fall to your death! (Elytra recommended) & “Tamable Dragons” fly 20-50% slower than using the “Elytra” Glider unless you’re holding the “Sprint” Button. (This will use up your “Energy Meter” and will slow down your “Attack Meter”) or use commands to change this attribute.
Fighting:
Each Dragon variant has its own unique fighting ability, but the basics are all the same.
You’ll have a Power/Attack meter that you’ll need to look at to achieve your stronger attacks (Much like the Horses “Jump Meter”). Hold your “Attack” Button to use tour ability (The attack meter will start to fill up until you let go of the Button or until it reaches the end of the meter. Afterwards, it will start to go back down (Once the meter starts to go down form the end of the meter, you’ll have to wait until the meter goes back down, to use the Dragon Attacks, BUT you can still break blocks and/or fight like you would with a Horse while waiting for the meter to go back down)). Let go of the “Attack” Button after your meter reaches 80% to Use a stronger attack.
Igneous/Fire:
Regular Attack: Blows/Shoots fire. (Will linger where it hits if it doesn’t hit an Entity)
Powered Attack: Shoots lightning). (The same amount of Damage as Lightning)
Aqua/Water:
Regular Attack: Spits/Shoots a Guardian’s harming/mining fatigue ray. (Same amount of Damage as a Guardian’s harming/mining fatigue ray)
Powered Attack: Shoots Ice or Ice Shards. (5 ½ Hearts of Damage & a Slowness affect)
Terra/Thorns:
Regular Attack: Coughs/Shoots Dirt or Thorns. (3 ½ Hearts of Damage & a temporary Fogy/Blindness affect)
Powered Attack: Shoot Stone Shards/spikes. (7 Hearts of Damage)
& Eris/Air:
Regular Attack: Gasps/shoots Poison. (The same amount of Damage as a Poison affect)
Powered Attack: Shoot a Shulker’s Levitation Projectile (With a 3 block knockback). (The same amount of Damage as a Shulker’s Levitation Projectile)
But every time that you kill 30 Entities with your Dragon, you will lose 1 XP. (Hostiles are worth 2-3 Entity kills) (You can get an Achievement for Dragon kills for each variant and (Wild) Dragon Slaying)
Breading: Still progressing

Customization: You don't need to read this.
(You can customize your Dragons Only in creative mode.)
To Customize a Dragon, you’ll need dyes to change the parts of the Dragon (The Body, Eyes, Scales/Spine, Horns, Wings and the Wings interiors) according to the colored dye you use. (Click the part of the Dragon that you want to change the color of with the dye of your color of choice)
My thoughts: You don't need to read this.
The reason I didn’t add “Dragon Armor” is because it would be too OP. and I added Variants to make them more fun to play around with. And sense you would expect DRAGONS to breathe Fire, I desisted to add some combat mechanics. These might be over powered, but I would be disappointed if they could only fly.
I personally don’t see Constant Flight as too OP, but I can see why others might see otherwise. I guess my Asperger doesn’t let me. But the only reason I can think of that would make Constant Flight too OP would be that Horses wouldn’t be as useful. But that makes me think about the fact that you can ride Pigs too, BUT they aren’t as useful as horses (If of any use). Except Horses would still be useful, especially if they fix the ability to add chests to your horses.
I think that instead of having Dragons that you can fly forever, that you’ll should have a time limit, as well as Danger. But I also thought that because their “Dragons” that they should be able to shoot FIRE, and maybe even Ice. I think that this aspect would make them more fun to use. And worth it for the “Gold Apples” that I thought would help UN OP them a bit. (I think that you should be able you Toggle this with “Commands”)
For the Fighting aspect of them, I thought would be a good Idea to add STRONGER attacks that would be harder to do but cause more damage, and different Variants of attacks each with their own use and purpose.
I also think that they would also be great for “Hunger Games” and “Team Wars”, as well as “Custom Maps” and “Structures” and also Movie Based Creations that recommend Dragons.
And YES. I’ve been asking and talking to people (Friends, Family and Strangers) and having LONG discussions about what they would think if Tamable Dragons where added to the Game. Most if not everybody thought and/or Sayed that would be “COOL”, “GREAT”, “Awesome” and “Fun”. But Most didn’t seemed to care about OPF (Over Powered Flight). If any, But I know that people in these threads might think the same way but wouldn’t want other people’s Ideas of Dragons if they’re not specific enough about their vision. So I hope that this thread isn’t too “vague”, (if vague) and is specific enough for you.
If you’re wondering about why I think that it would be a great idea toned “Netherwart” to get them to bread. It’s because a lot of people see them as unholy creatures. (Well, At least the Catholic people and a couple of other people I know)
I don’t really care too much about the variant attacks, so I’m not sure if you’d like me to change their Damage.
It seems like even though people want “Tamable Dragons added to the game! But will look for any reason to go against Threads for Tamable Dragons. But I can see why. People don’t just want Tamable Dragons added to the game! But the perfect Tamable Dragon Idea for VMC. Witch I agree would be a good idea, but it also shows negativity towards the Idea of Tamable Dragons.
That is why I’ve decided to try to create an Idea for the perfect “Tamable Dragons” (Well, close enough ). (This Idea is still a working progress. But I don’t know what I should change)

10 minutes of uninterrupted flight is insanely OP, even if you have to wait 15 minutes for it to recharge. Flight means no obstacles, straight lines to destinations, which means covering thousands of blocks, or tens of thousands using the Nether (which would admittedly be slower due to smaller spaces). I have to assume they fly about as fast as a Horse runs, so it could cover about 8500 blocks befor needing to stop.
On top of that giving it attacks is overkill. The dragons do have low health which is good but I don't think any flight beyond the Elytra can be balanced.

It's still overpowered. There's a reason there's only one (untameable) dragon in the game, and no direct-attack potions or enchantments; being able to hurl fire and lightning unbalances every aspect of combat. Similarly, unlimited flight is only in Creative because it unbalances Survival. The Elytra is the closest thing we're going to get, and it's not only a complete end-game item, it's not even real flight. As much as I like dragons, they just don't fit.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Based on your responses: What if Flight was no more than 3 Minutes & takes 1 MC Day to charge up the "Energy Meter" and fighting with Dragons took 10xp for every kill?
What if "Tamable Dragons" could only spawn after you've defeated the "End Dragon" and have them a little smaller than the "End Dragon"?
And maybe a "Dragon Slayer" achievement for every variant. And every time you kill a Tamable Dragon you get 8xp?

Yea, flight time should only be a few minutes. Other than minecraft not handling these things too well, you would be able to easily escape from an engagement.
If they are only 3 minutes of flight and 20 minutes to recharge then there wouldn't really be much point in having them because it would be easier to just make permanent ways to get to local things. I just don't think it can be implemented in a balanced way regardless of how long the the flight and recharge times are. I think that this would be too big of a feature to just drop in the game and a lot of things would need to be changed to accommodate it.

I don't like this idea, it's suggested quite a lot and I feel that it wouldn't fit in minecraft. AHen you get a dragon than you don't need to explore the end to find the elytra, because the dragon can fly. I also don't like their fighting or customization or types, no support.

You can ONLY get Tamable Dragons If you've defeated the End Dragon.
The Elytra Can fly for a longer period of time, but is harder to maintain flight.
My idea for Tamable Dragons cant fly for more than 1-2 minutes before you have to wait 5 minutes to use it again.

Its not that hard to maintain flight, and if it lets you fly farther and longer it's better.

The dragon breaks every single block it touches (Except for obsidian, bedrock and endstone), so having a tamable dragon would destroy your world, unless they code a dragon from zero, also, the dragon would be giant, and when you try to break a block on the surface, you accidentally would hit him.
Also, Why? We don't need more ways of being transported, we got ender pearls, elytra, horses, minecrats, slime blocks and our own legs.
Other reason of why I dont like this idea is because I can't really think of a good way to park him somewhere, would it just be there waiting for you? Would it fight every single mob or let himself be killed? Also, I think the dragon is meant to be an epic boss, found only in the end, to make that dimension more unique.
Having dragons everywhere just doesn't fits into my mind, sorry.

All of what they've said. Sure, it may be more convenient flight than Elytra being that you wouldn't have to use Punch 2 or the -40, 40 degree trick, but also being able to shoot fire? Unbelievable. Not to mention that the ED is still pretty easy, so what would keep you from farming TD's and getting a lot of them? Even if it's really rare, rare does NOT mean it's balanced. Also, breeding issues. Very overpowered.
The "every 30 kills" XP loss would be broken- XP is not hard to come by. You would need 289 XP orbs to get to level 17, and that would lead to 8670 technical "mob" kills. Even with the 2-3 hostile mob count for killing, that's still a minimum of 2890 hostile mob kills. At level 17.
Also about dragon armor: We don't need a new tier. We have plenty of armor already, and just because it's rare doesn't make it balanced.

They'll have to code the dragons from zero then, if the dragon is too big for the end portal, then it is bigger than a horse, and they dont have to actually ''fit into the portal'' to enter, they just touch the block and boom, they're in, shooting lighting is too op and chaotical, and flying while doing that... sorry, there's no way you can get this idea to be good inside my mind, sorry

Types: That's cool, that makes it kind of like horses.
Finding: I like that you tried to make it so that you would need to find an Elytra first, but forcing the player to use it up is pointless. Also, achievements don't and shouldn't give you XP. The front leg spawning is unnecessary.Taming: I think you should come up with a new method for taming. Simply feeding them food is not very interesting. Revamp that part by adding a new item or method for dragon taming.
Flying: This is where things start to get complicated. In singleplayer, unlimited flight is fine; you've effectively "beaten" the game at this point. Even still, this should be changed. Perhaps closer to Skyward Sword-style flight mixed with Elytra. You constantly lose altitude, however, you can press the jump button to flap your wings and gain some altitude. This takes up some stamina. Stamina slowly recovers over time, but once it runs out, the dragon will be unable to flap its wings or recover any stamina until it lands. In addition, mechanics like nose-diving can be used to speed you up and increase the distance you can fly without consuming stamina. This makes flying more skill based and helps to differentiate it from other forms of transportation. Once a dragon lands, it can't fly again until its stamina fully replenishes, which, for balance reasons, takes longer than normal. If a dragon's stamina is 80% depleted, it takes four minutes to replenish.
Fighting: I actually don't like this part. However, if it is implemented, it should consume stamina, to make you think carefully about using your dragon for battle. Stronger attacks would consume more stamina. This cost is enough to remove the XP cost.
Breeding: Yeah, breeding would be overpowered. You can create an army of dragons while trying to get the perfect mount.
Customization: That's cool and all, but I personally think editing should just be performed through /entitydata, so a whole new interface/mechanic isn't required.
So, this can be balanced for singleplayer usage easily enough. But multiplayer is another thing. Some new guy comes onto a server and is obliterated by some guy raining death from above on his dragon. Actually, come to think about it, the same thing can happen if a new guy runs into someone with diamond equipment. Thus, a new guy would just have to come up with strategies to survive in these cases.
Main problem for me is, we have no precedent. It will be difficult to make this fit into the game, as we don't have any other mythological friendly creatures.
Overall though, I do like it. I'll give it 70% Support.

I'd love more dragons to be added to MC, but I have to agree that outside of mods, I really can't see tamable dragons being able to be balanced enough to make it into vanilla. That said, it still is a cool idea you have
