I've always wanted there to be more ways to craft and use certain items in minecraft. Wheat and tallgrass are some good examples, which is why I suggest they should be able to be crafted into an item called a "Plant Ball".
Plant Balls can be used as fuel in a furnace to smelt 24 operations or 5 of them can be crafted with some sugar to create a slime ball.
So you may believe that the slime ball recipe is overpowered, but requiring 45 whole wheat per slime ball balances it out pretty well.
EDIT : If your going to say that it's redundant, don't bother, it's already been said multiple times.
This seems pretty redundant, there are already plenty of fuel sources and slime balls come from. . .slimes.

Plant balls are the only type of fuel that is better than coal (excluding coal blocks) and slimes can only be found in certain areas underground or in swamps.

Why would I use them over coal (I regularly mine 2,000 in around 3 hours, and that's not with Fortune. For perspective, that would cook all the food I've ever cooked in a world with over 1,600 hours of playtime on it - or only around 0.2% of my total playtime spent getting fuel to cook food), charcoal, or even wood? You need shears to get tall grass and it is easier to grow or find wood than wheat. Fuels like coal and charcoal are also more convenient in that the number of items they smelt divides evenly into one stack, or waste is negligible (43 planks will smelt 64 items with 1/3 of a plank lost); with plant balls you have to smelt 24 or 48 items, or top off/unload the furnace at least once (or automatically) if smelting 72 or more.
It isn't that hard to find slimes either; just do some caving or make a slime farm, and slimeballs are not essential for survival and slime blocks have some properties that merit making them a bit difficult to obtain (they are more useful than packed ice, which is really hard to get unless you are lucky or do a lot of exploring).

That's usually a bad line of thinking. When you add more ways to craft one thing, you can ruin it for the original ways. This is a pretty out-there idea for a fuel source...
If you go to the Nether and run out of lava. Something's wrong.

You're too vague I never saw you say it was a fuel, now what it can make a laser gun. And seriously, other than fuel and slimeballs why should this be implemented in the game.

I don't support this suggestion since it was way too vague as well as artificial (not natural) since it involve the production of counterfeit haybales.
Only enough lava in every chunk to melt over 11,000 items (most of the obsidian is the result of me pouring water on lava, so it is otherwise available for fuel; a popular misconception is that lava only exists at y=10 when it goes all the way into bedrock, filling up vast networks of caves, which are most common in that range).
Likewise, how much coal is there?
(16:0),Coal Ore,7794150
Including the around 750,000 coal I've mined, about 158 per chunk, enough to smelt 1,265 items - per chunk, which is a very small area (on a render distance of 10 you load 441 chunks). If you mine coal while mining other resources (e.g. iron) you'll always get more than enough.
In other words, there are plenty of existing fuel sources, and even the ones which are not renewable (lava, coal) are essentially unlimited and otherwise there are many fuels which are easier to grow or craft.
You're too vague I never saw you say it was a fuel, now what it can make a laser gun. And seriously, other than fuel and slimeballs why should this be implemented in the game.
Why is this vague? What about laser guns? I already mentioned it was a fuel in the main post. And I guess theres no reason for it to exist other than those things, but why does it matter?

Why do you think it's vague and artificial? And what do you mean by "counterfeit hay bales"?
You don't even need the Nether; this is from a world I have with about 54,000 chunks; yes, from the Overworld:

He's not. He's saying that coal is ridiculously common and there's no reason to make these plant balls when coal is more convenient, especially with a Fortune III pick. Even lava is more convenient, it seems.
I'd agree with him, and I'd say the same for your slime ball recipe. Slimes are somewhat difficult to reach sometimes, but once you find them you obtain a ridiculous amount of slime balls.

If he wants to tell me that we already have enough fuel types, he can tell me that. This isn't the first thread I've made where he's gone ridiculously out of his way to prove me wrong.
I'm just really not getting this. Why is a plant violently mashed into a ball more capable of being fuel than a solid piece of coal..? And this giving another use for wheat is meaningless if I can just get other good fuels for way less time.

Actually forgot about blaze rods. xD
Also, lava isn't renewable, but true.
I think this idea is alright. Not perfect, but alright. You might want to lower the burn time. Partial support.
