I had so much trouble getting villagers to my base using the door trick. There does need to be a way. I think emeralds are a good suggestion or even holding a door could be pretty good.
The one problem is that villagers are coded to stay close to their village, so the coders would have to work around that when allowing players to lead villagers away from their houses.
I think it would be nice to have an easier way to move villagers in survival mode. Luring them with an emerald is reasonable, but maybe there should be an option to buy a villager spawn egg. Or I'd be fine with baby smuggling. Whatever.
I like to think that the villagers are smart enough to not be lured by your tricks. Besides, they're like, the natives, if you will, of the land. They know it better than you, ect. ect.
Craft a minecart, push a villager into it. problem solved.
No support.
Problem not solved, because you're going to need to constantly put rails in order for the villager to go, and it will only be going along the rails. Also, it would get in the way of building.

Minecraft is not medieval-themed!!! As a matter of fact, it doesn't have a set time. And when and WHY did putting reponses in the quote, especially long ones, become a trend in the Suggestions? It's rather inconvenient, mainly since the OP has to gather your quote up manually. Avatar made by Endergirl!
People are seriously arguing against this because they think villagers are too smart to be tricked?
1) Who cares how smart the villagers are? Call it bribe or paying for a settler. It doesn't matter. Minecraft has zero story and barely any real world consistency.
2) Even if villager intelligence did matter, villagers are dumber than a sack of bricks. I don't think they're going to be too smart for anything...
Problem not solved, because you're going to need to constantly put rails in order for the villager to go, and it will only be going along the rails. Also, it would get in the way of building.
I strongly disagree. The argument that it would require one to constantly put down rails is moot. If you don't have the resources yet, acquire them. it's not like rails require diamond. For that matter, you don't even have to have a large amount, or use powered rails for that matter. I've transported villagers via rail over 1000m before, and used only160 pieces of track (60 iron ingots and some sticks).
Mind you also, getting that 'first' pair of villagers is the challenge, and in my opinion,, SHOULD be a challenge. Especially considering how easy it is to get them to breed.
And no-body mentioned that you can 'turn' a villager zombie back to a villager, although you need to have a pot and golden apple.
It is that the exact way it is done is just a bit strange, which is why giving them an emerald for that would probabily work better.
Agreed. I think the mechanic of luring a villager is awkward.
I think it would be far better to buy a settler flag from a villager that you have good relations with and then place the flag whatever you want. In a few days (randomized in game time), the flag would vanish and a few villagers would appear at its location. Obviously, at that point, the village would have to follow the same rules as normal village.
No support. This is one of the last things you have to do in survival that have a little challenge in it. So, no, don't make it easier, mojang. Anyways, rails and a minecart are a solution easy enough.
I don't see it as a challenge as much as it is a nuisance. Therefore, Mojang should ignore you and make the sandbox game the most fun for the most people. If you prefer to transport villagers via trains, there's nothing stopping you.
That said, this isn't a high priority for me personally and would rather the Mojang team focus on more important things such as the mod API or world generation. Of course, what I say doesn't matter In fact, nothing any of us say in the suggestion forums matter. It's an echo chamber and Mojang completely ignores it.
Until the day a villager lures you into a trap with a diamond because mine crafts newly implemented a auto pilot feature took over and forced you to follow this villager with a diamond. How would you feel? Now how do you think an intelligent villager would feel if he was suddenly forced to follow you?
Villager space program, nuff said.
Simply trade something for the emeralds, such as wheat, string or rotten flesh.
You forgot to mention coal. Also, you can summon a villager with bizarre trades, such as 1 dirt block for 64 emerald blocks.

Well, they do, and as most of Minecraft players are very young, the game gets easier and easier. But I think that we should keep every challenge/nuisance that is still in the game just for our amusement. Otherwise, why don't we go and play creative?
I really don't see what this has to do with difficulty though. It's not a balancing issue like PvP or fighting the Ender Dragon.
All I'd like is a built-in way to start-up a new village that doesn't require cheating or building a ton of trains tracks that I then have to remove later. Building train tracks isn't hard nor is it much of a challenge to find the iron (either naturally or with a golem grinder), but it is a nuisance if you're goal is just to move a villager.
I want legitimate challenges (internal or external) not artificial ones created by an inability to interact with the world in an appropriate manner. Since this is a matter of option and I would never say my opinion is more important than any other players, I think it would be a reasonable option to add to the game for people that wish to take advantage of it.
My personal example? I don't like alchemy - I don't like how it's implemented and I never really wanted added to the game, but it's fine. I just ignore potions and carry on my life without using them (most of the time).

Livestock is MUCH MORE PLENTIFUL than Villagers; and for good reason.

Ok, so let's forget the bickering. The root of the issue is that Villagers are sometimes hard to find, and when you do find one, you may desire to relocate it (them). Considering the average distance between villages and distance to be relocated, using rail is far more efficient, at least in respects to time expended, than 'luring' would be. Ever tried to lure a cow for more than 1000 blocks (probably not, because they're more common.. but I digress)? With rail, you can build a tunnel just a block below surface, and run track as you go (stripping from behind if you run out of track.). I honestly don't see the benefit, considering the distances typically involved.
That said, the whole issue with villagers running around your 'mall' at night like they're on crack is a pain. I solved that by just leaving them in a cart. But I can see how the ability to lure could be helpful in getting villagers to behave.
We should totally be able to use emeralds to lure villagers to us. To add with the difficulty, you can only lure villagers after trading.
