If there is a feature that adds an extra element to PvP, and it's good... but you don't PvP... Then you wouldn't support it, by that logic. And who knows? Maybe you'll end up PVPing a year later. To evaluate an idea is to evaluate its merit to people who use it and are affected by it. I have NEVER refrained from supporting something due to my not going to use it. :l
At any rate "toggleability" isn't applicable to this system anymore. It's always active but you get to choose what resolutions it shows.
That's different, since when you play Minecraft on multiplayer (which I do), then I'm going to see the HD skins (or I'll have to disable it in the settings). If I wouldn't play Multiplayer, then I'd just have remained neutral on this subject.

You're not disabling it anymore, you choose exactly what you want to see. At any rate, you said yourself that clouds were okay, and I'm sure you like smooth lighting. I have to turn off both half the time because I camp out in the mountains on a server I go on and the smooth lighting drops ten frames. I'm having to go into options all the time to turn them on and off depending on where I am but I'm fine with them. Same goes for the FOV, I can't stand having it at 50 and have to turn that to zero. Then there's the light which always gets a slide to the right... See what just happened? I had to change four things before the game was perfect. There are many more settings that others must use that I haven't even touched. You set up what skins you see, once probably.
As many people have said above me, it wouldn't fit right. I typically use the default pack or a simplistic texture pack as I have a bad computer and seeing HD skins wouldn't fit at all. It would look bad and messy. No Support

It would seem that you didn't notice a few things while reading through this thread, but that's okay! Sometimes you have to take baby steps to understand a concept.
Let's start in the title: "Resolution blocker!"
Now, I know that large text can be hard to notice, so under the ernormous red text that said "read this before you TL;DR" I included a checklist of things that this suggestion included... which said this on one of them: "A solution to allow users to block any resolution skins they want".
Of course, some people like to skip introductions, so I made sure the bones of the OP drove this point home too. Under "Skin Handling", I made sure the point about being able to block certain skin resolutions was heartily capitalized on in the "Introduce a Resolution Blocking System" section. Cleverly named, no?
Others, more, like to jump to the conclusion of the thread and see the culmination of the poster's work, so I made sure to cover it in my pros and cons checklist as well, which is where I said "makes skins compatible with different texture pack resolutions, and allows you to prevent incompatible resolution skins from rendering.".
Of course, you're not alone if you didn't read any of it so I made sure to reply and clarify this important facet of the OP when people raised their concerns after not reading it. This would be the seventh clarification relating to being able to disable certain resolutions in the replies.
I've begun clarifying my thread to users that misinterpret this suggestion through PMs, but it would seem some people haven't noticed that either. Even then, it's perfectly understandable to miss the statement that seeing higher resolution skins is optional 12 times; we're only human, right?

I hope you have a lovely day!
Let's make one thing clear first. I've read every post in this thread in full and I still don't support. All your doing is trying to use the infamous It's optional excuse to protect your idea. I feel that something like skins shouldn't be optional as it would make players show up as Steve/Alex. Getting rid of the skin servers would cause A LOT of server lag as the server tries to handle all the incoming skins. One thing that also confused me in your post was you said how there would no longer be redundant skins but I don't understand how anything in the suggestion stops skin stealing. From what I've seen is you're basically calling everyone out who is making a valid piece of criticism by using excuses. My point still stands: Still No Support

Remember I was replying to this: "As many people have said above me, it wouldn't fit right. I typically use the default pack or a simplistic texture pack as I have a bad computer and seeing HD skins wouldn't fit at all. It would look bad and messy.". Notice you said it would conflict with your texture pack. It's a moot point and is no longer relevant. Most of the others who complained were offering up the same argument and eventually you run out of ways to tell people the same thing you told the people before them.
You should know the point isn't that it's optional. It's not really optional and is implemented to function along a gradient where you're always affected by it, but not explicitly. Optional is just an easy word to use. The skin system I have is set up such that you have two skins, mind you, so as long as you're reasonable with the res-block, there won't be a problem. The server will be fine distributing skin files so long as the transfers aren't given priority over other intensive server processes and transfers. It's also worth noting that the mod I used to get my HD skin pictures uses a 20$ a month server to distribute thousands of skins, yet they load instantly.
Getting rid of the skin servers eliminates many problems and if the server truly isn't equipped with the bandwidth or power to relay those skins, as I believe I evidenced in the OP, the server can partially or fully disable the feature and relay mid to LD skins easily due to their often being less than 10 kb. The redundant skin handling was discussed in passing here: "3. Redundant skin handling (ten people use the same skin, instead of there being ten skins stored, associate the first skin with the others).". Identifying identical images is simple. I don't want to get too deep into this because, simply put, I'm not an expert on this particular matter and feel more comfortable leaving it in the hands of Mojang-crosoft, but one method is simply cross checking random pixels between the new skin and the skins in the server database of the same resolution, then thoroughly comparing possible matches after several cycles.
Instead of having a skin server that lets me do this: https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftSkins/GamingPlant.png
I proposed that the server relays skins instead of the mojang skin server. I said it largely solves the skin stealing problem, and for good reason. I can't just scrape peoples skins by typing their usernames into a link anymore. I have to find a server they go on, get close enough to them to download their skin from the server, then I have to wade through the assets folder in my Minecraft client and find the unintelligibly named, extensionless file that has my skin in it. Let me be the first to tell you it's not fun stealing skins this way. I suppose an added layer of defense would be encrypting the skin files, but THAT might cause lag.
Also there is another thing I forgot to mention. What about the people who have bad computers? I know you would have a "resolution blocker" but that would be practically impossible. What would they look like with the blocker on? If you are thinking that you make it pixelated again that would also be practically impossible. I'm sorry but you need to think about this more.

@TuddlesT Users are permitted to upload two skins(of different resolution). If both skins do not match one of the users' unblocked resolutions, then they look like their texturepack's default skins. I'm against scaling skins so that was never an option i was truly open to considering in the first place. This system was contemplated with client-side scalability in mind. Not sure how you thought the res-block was impossible...
This was in the OP already, btw:
[quote]1. Introduce a resolution blocking system: Essentially, create a menu that allows the user to block or enable certain skin resolutions. This would be a menu in the options with a list of 6 checkboxes(1 for each resolution). Unchecking the 32x32 box, for instance, would make people with a 32x32 skin look like your texture pack's default player unless they had a second skin that was supported.Reason: It allows both high res and low res favoring users to have their way while also allowing them to have a broad range of accepted skins. Increases scalability.

@TuddlesT Then use a publicly available skin if you want an easy fix, or commission an artist to tailor you a skin(Or an HD/LD rendition of your existing skin); they usually charge less than $5. That's actually something I want to capitalize on too. This allows for so many possibilities for artists that are into Minecraft to not only hone their skills, but earn money doing it. Most Minecraftians use a premade skin anyway, and your using a publicly available skin would synergize very well with the redundancy interventions Mojang would need to implement.
Ya I feel I'm just getting attacked here: I won't change my support until I see a way that actually makes sense. No Support
Because telling someone to have a wonderful day is aggressive now, apparently. >.>
Sounds like a cop out when you don't even explain what doesn't make sense. :\
If there's something you don't like about my explanation or don't understand, rebut it. That's how I figure out how to better my system. My first draft of this suggestion was awful but without back-and-forth with others and detailed discussions I would have never been able to improve my suggestion as much as I did.
Instead of using Steve if there is no low res skin, could it just be an automatically downsized version of the HD one?
No, sadly. Automatically downsizing stuff makes you lose alot of fine details that may not like being downsized.Instead, users are permitted to use two skins of different resolution.
No, sadly. Automatically downsizing stuff makes you lose alot of fine details that may not like being downsized.Instead, users are permitted to use two skins of different resolution.
I know. All I'm saying is if they decide not to upload a low-res skin, it would look more visually appealing to have an automatically downsized skin than a bunch of steves running around for those who (like myself) will probably end up disabling the high res skins.
I love the idea and HD skins are cool and all but getting a skin is not something that people put a huge amount of thought into and downloading 5 different skins is kind of annoying just saying even if a skin packs were available for all 5 resolutions in one download. Also a skin author who takes a hug amount of time making a 1082x1082p now also has to make 4 more lower resolution skins sooooo unless you can find a solution to that....
Well it's the choice of that user if they don't want users to see them in a low-res skin. I'm not going to force people to do things they don't want to do. Personally, I'd probably have two HD skins simply because the concept design for my skin can't be done with what we have now.
At any rate, there won't be "a bunch of steves running around" because most people will upload at least one skin at a low or default resolution.
I currently have no support on this thread. Its because of the MODEL. I mean, look at your banner, look at the Villager, look at Jeb. the HD resolution does not fit with the cubic box with sharp edges. The thing we need first is we can change the mobs and the Player MODEL itself. Because the HD skin people are making, do not fit with a cubic model. People give a skin that have curves to a cubic model. thats just not fit man
Imagine an old game like the first metal gear solid. The model look horrible in this time. But, the skin of the horrible model just fit perfectly, because the skin is ugly too hee hee:P. But what if it have a Ultimate HD skin from the the latest Metal Gear Solid game. It looked undefyingly weird.
1.8 already have the block model, so you can now make real grass, round cauldron, a real looking ladder and much more
Luckily, the wiki says in 1.9 update could have the ability to change the mobs and the Player model, like the 1.8 you can change the block model.

Half Life: Source had an HD texture pack. All the characters and terrain had HD textures but still had the models from 98'. HL:S was made nearly indistinguishable from a game from today, even, save for the sounds. The concept of curves on cubes is perfectly fine when you look at some other iconic cubes... Like the companion cube or even the Astor Place cube(Even if their surfaces were flattened like Minecraft). Personally, I don't think the shape of the model has any bearing on the aesthetic.
