There are so many people saying "it's going to be impossible to deal with a group of mobs! The game is ruined!".
You're overlooking a major thing; you can still hit while the sword is in cooldown. Yes dealing with mobs is going to be slower, but it's not going to be impossible. You can still spam-click your way through a crowd of zombies to clear them away, you just won't do as much damage to them. It's that simple.
Also, as several people have pointed out, this is not a final thing. It is still going to change in future snapshots.
Now quit whining and go and play your PvP before it's RUINED FOREVER!!!!

And this new feature will make players use shields more often!
Rip pvp PVP will be pretty much ruined if there is a attack indicator. I hope that there is a game rule for that. Hope hypixel and mineplex will not update to 1.9
You say it sucks, but you don't know anything about it yet?
Stop disliking before you even know what it is about!
The spam-clicking required ZERO skill. it was just whoever could get higher ping, and who could click faster. Now it actually requires you to know when to sllice, and you just can't take out hoards of 1000 zombies whenever you feel like it. It's cool I think.
I think this is the best thing they could've done for PvP. As many people have said in this thread already, spam clicking your sword requires no skill. You'll now have to think about what you're about to do and constantly as you do it. The perfect timing between blocking with your shield and swinging with your sword for maximum effect. No more getting lucky kills mindlessly running at people spamming away. In a situation like UHC or Hunger Games, waiting for a fight between 2 players to finish so you can swoop in and clean up the surviving injured player may no longer be a viable strategy because that player is now more able to defend themselves. This is definitely doing to change PvP in Minecraft, but for the better. It will be more methodical. I think the original poster just hasn't thought everything through or actually done any testing with the actual changes, because I'd wager there will be very few 5 year olds that will be successful with these new mechanics. I think you'll see a much larger gap between people that are good at PvP and those that aren't, given that now more to it than clicking your mouse as fast as you can. Very excited for this!
this is even better. Spam-clicking is still a thing, you CAN spam-click, it's just highly situational (primarily for max knockback). Half-spam-clicking is also more situational (maximum DPS, but allows less control over whether you crit, and takes less shield time than waiting for the bar to fully charge)

Arrows fired from undrawn bows should only knockback the percentage for it was drawn.
The most emphatic objections to the new mechanics are from those who exploited the old game mechanics. This shake-up of learned click patterns shows there was no play in PVP in the first place, only blind reliance on clicking. It is a refreshing change to make players think when in battle.

Sentence 1: I disagree. I think it's a nice situational strategy to arrow-spam, and highly counterable and risky (if they flank you they will get a free hit, and the damage from arrow-spam is quite low).
The rest: yeah, I guess 1v1 PvP was based on block-hitting, which was a glitch. I feel like it was pretty strategic though; it's just that reflexes were a lot more important than strategy. And honestly, since people complained about 1.8 beta (which brought the main combat mechanics in the first place), I'm not really surprised they're complaining now.
I think that pinning down a player with knockback from a rapid barrage of undrawn bow shots is an exploit that needs to be fixed, as it denies the other player any counter to it.
A bow spammer can sneak up on a player in a UHC gathering apples in a tree and the bowspam at 3-block range traps the player in the tree, I can also trap others in this way with bowspam, and it's the full knockback from quick, tiny shots that does it.

You have got to be kidding me. It is incredibly easy to flank an enemy attempting to do this (due to the slowness of the projectile and the fact that every projectile has to land for a long time for it to be effective in a 1v1 setting), and if you do you gain a massive advantage.
Oh, also, blocking is a hard-counter to arrows now, so you got your wish

They don't shoot back? And you have enough arrows to keep doing it until they die? o:
I think you deserved that kill. Trading your mobility for someone else's if you plan very well and have a significantly better kit than them seems reasonable to me.
You say it takes no skill now, what. It took no skill before all you had to do was spam the mouse button or runaway because dr.spam wouldn't stop 'mlging' you and you sound like a spammer whos mad because all of sudden you have to do different things.

the current combat system is only mash2win and run around your target anyway.
..................
So much more complicated than that. Mashing and running is the first step, but block-hitting, manipulating crits and knockback, apples giving regeneration and health boost so it's best to do it after you get hurt but you might want to do it before, etc.
People don't like these new changes, because they are not used to it.
This isn't "worse" than the old combat system. It's New. Fresh. I refuse to play kitpvp because its unfair. people spam, and they win. the people who have been around awile get good armor AND THEY ALWAYS WIN.
With this new combat system, it will give new people a chance.
How will this ruin PVP? it's just removing a feature that never should have been added.
Now, If you are still thinking this will ruin pvp, look at the good features. new arrows for example.
these changes aren't making anything worse. they are just new. I bet in a couple years there will be another change. by then you will have forgotten about spam clicking and gotten attatched to these new features.
There will always be haters and I can't stop that. But I do what I can.
Updates things:
People #1: noo don't add this thing it will ruin everything
People #2: yes add it, it will make much better game
at last, after the update official release :
People #1, #2: yaay i love the new update, never doubt about mojang they are awesome
this happens everytime. and will keep happening.. :l
I'm just a very boring person.

1.8 was good, all the command block stuff they added... *Looks around and notices no one cares*

Nevermind, I'll just take my redstone filled pockets elsewhere...

1.9 now requires more skill and will make PvE/Survival finally a bit harder, stop complaining.
Also, mineplex is the number 1 server, shrekt m9
