You have to beat the Ender Dragon, then throw an ender pearl into the gateway portal that appears after defeating it (it shines a purple beacon into the sky for a few seconds after spawning). This should teleport you to another end island with lots of purple trees (called Chorus Plants) on it. Just do some exploring and eventually you should find one.
I've found one too. Only thing is, now you can get beacons without beating the wither. Doesn't that kinda beat the whole purpose?
This attitude doesn't make sense... (not just you, but on Mojang because apparently they're removing it)
The "intentional" method is to find a nether fortress
grind wither skeletons until you have the heads (I've heard they're so rare grinding would almost be necessary, not something you'd get by casually killing withers as you would other mobs)
Assemble the wither
Fight an intentionally OP boss
Craft beacon
vs. the boat:
collect ender eyes (likely by grinding endermen and blazes)
travel a long distance to a stronghold and activate the portal
defeat the ender dragon
pearl into the ender gateway
explore until you find a rare structure
survive shulkers
obtain beacon
Ok, both are:
"end game"
probably going to require grinding
probably requiring exploring the nether for a nether fortress (possibly other loot chests instead for ender eyes)
probably not be accomplished by almost all players in SSP
Difference being the one from the end doesn't require fighting an intentionally OP boss, would require less grinding (common drops rather than rare drops), and probably rewards exploring a bit more.
They're also not exclusive. A beacon only has max TWO effects (and one of those has to be Regeneration I IF you don't get the II version of your non-regen effect), and doesn't cover a huge area, so you'd likely want more than one. If you wanted 5 beacons, you'd really have to fight the wither 5 times? The grinding (especially if automated) to get the heads alone would not be fun and that's not really in "the minecraft spirit" now is it?
With the boat, especially assuming it's quite rare, doesn't make getting the beacon "traditionally" (at least once) out of the question. I could very well see someone getting 2 beacons, one from a wither and the other from the end boat. If anything, it rewards exploration in the end, assuming people bother to try and actually get that far (which I doubt even 10% of players would), and make it more worthwhile than loot of things already easily attainable in end game and some fancy light poles.

I agree completely,
That is what I was trying to say above but just not in so much detail.
I really wish they wouldn't remove this feature!
Also some people keep saying players would delete the end files/folder then get a new end and continuously get beacons but can't someone also just turn on LAN, allow cheats and then type /give @p beacon 64 ? what is the difference they are both cheating, no one is going to stop you...

The beacon was only there for testing purposes. Searge has already tweeted that he simply didn't have the time to remove them before the snapshot was released (I would link to that tweet, but I haven't figured out how to link to specific tweets yet...)
damn, I hope they stay. currently beacons are practically worthless in singleplayer because by the time you get one you are probably fed up with minecraft.
Having one or two beacons available relatively quickly, and in places a survival mode builder would actually want to go for other resources is much better than requiring mindless grinding of wither skeletons for 8 hours.
I found something really weird while traversing the end. After finding an End city. I found this:
It has a potion stand, a beacon and two chests. It's full of shulker and IT'S A FREAKING BOAT!!!
Has anybody else found this amazing structure.
(It seems to spawn near biger more extravagant End citys)
Yes I found one too. They're called End Ships and there's a chance of one generating near an End City. Pretty cool aren't they?
Quote me or click the "reply" button or I might not see your reply.
Yeah! Were they mentioned in the snap shot details at all?

You still have to kill the ender dragon, then find the slightly rare ship, so I say its more balanced.

Why does this ender boat even exist?
I have only conquered the End. Now I will conquer the world
Units! Onward to the rest of MineCraft!
Just a cool new structure for the End
Also they have loot chests inside
Why does the entire outer section of the End exist for that matter? Just adds more to explore, you really don't need to question it.
Just don't question it man...
its called a snapshot. you can get it using "edit profile"
I'm Waiting for the title of "Emerald Miner" then I'll keep it!
Interesting new dungeon. I wonder what will be inside!

Except that killing the Wither is 100x harder than killing the Dragon.
