Ok this is probably a silly question, but I have never been to the End before. How do you make the Ender Dragon appear? I thought that if I got close enough to the bedrock structure in the center of the obsidian pillars that it would trigger him, so I skirted around the outside area and took out all of the crystals first. But then when I went to the center, nothing happened. Am I supposed to do something with an Eye of Ender?
Btw I am in normal mode, there are Endermen all around me.
Nope, just delete System32.
Seriously though, the dragon should be there when you first arrive... That's odd...
Ok so it's nothing that I'm doing or not doing? He's just supposed to be here automatically? I guess I should use a command to summon him then? From what I understand, if I don't beat him I won't be able to access the new End stuff.
So far the Ender Dragon is in a bit of an iffy state. It's almost exactly like the console edition but it also inherited the flaws in the console edition's version. Every so often the Dragon will hover above the portal to do the Ender Acid attack but if you're not near the portal and are just firing arrows for a distance she'll just sit there and do nothing. She also fires fireballs but they barely seem to work either being invislble or fired the wrong direction.
For the most part, the fight still revolves around the Dragon still constantly circling you basically doing nothing. I know there was talk about it being more aggressive as you destroy the Ender Crystals, so in all likelyhood it's just not finished.
So I spawned the Ender Dragon in. It had no health bar. I just kept hitting it in Creative Mode and after about 50 or so hits it finally died. However, there was no dragon egg, nor teleporter to the new part of the End. So I finally just watched a video and saw how far away it was and manually teleported myself there.
But, I understand that it's just a snapshot and will have lots of bugs like this, so whatevs.
Their bows now act exactly like a player's bow, meaning they require to draw back before firing
They are smart enough to keep their bow drawn back if the player gets in cover before they finish drawing, meaning if the player comes out of cover they'll immediately fire
I believe these were always the case (at the very least, the first one is), it just wasn't obvious since they didn't visibly pull back their bowstrings (even though they actually did charge their shots). Most people simply interpreted the behavior as "skeletons are now spamfests" when it was introduced because of the lack of visual feedback.
Insofar I'm fairly disappointed with the update, but that's almost certainly because a lot of things are unfinished. Especially the derpiness in the Enderdragon fight; I didn't even know it had the Ender Acid attack because I thought that not going near a giant freakin' dragon, even if it wasn't moving (I thought it was stuck on the portal actually) was an excellent idea.
I haven't fought the shulkers in a "fair" fight yet (just flew through the tower to see the loot) but they seem to be lackluster combatants. They have low base damage, and presumably standing underneath a block or placing one above you will nullify any threat that Levitation has. You can probably tank the shots and just snipe them whenever they poke their heads out, or just spam melee when you're in range.
The loot is also extraordinarily lame; beetroots? They're downright *awful* compared to even basic food items like wheat, their only boon being that the uncooked form has an okay hunger/saturation ratio (still worse than steak) and they're probably the hardest food source to obtain. I only hope that they get a huge buff, or preferably a unique use. The other loot in the cities are pretty crappy (enchanted diamond armor can and probably has been gotten long before you set foot in them) with the sole exception of the Beacon there; at least you don't have to go through the horrible slog of grinding for Wither skulls any more.
The aesthetic stuff is pretty good, but it usually is. Most of my complaints are balance issues which are allegedly going to be resolved, so hopefully Dinnerbone does a decent job of rebalancing it...

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

Ender Dragon is kind of a mess. I think Dinnerbone mostly wanted to mimic the console edition fight and go from there, as it's pretty much identical to it aside from the buggy fireballs it shoots. The ender acid attack is pretty lackluster too when you can just sit back while the dragon hovers and do nothing. Perhaps the dragon should have a shield while hovering over the portal that deflects arrows, similar to the Wither? That way you have to get close to it if you want to dish out the big damage.
Shulkers are bit weird. Their levitation effect isn't really meant to kill you, though it definitely can if you don't react accordingly and it drops you from a lethal height. It seems more meant to add the element of flying to combat. But until combat itself gets changed in future snapshots its yet to be seen how the fights against Shulkers will work.
As for the loot, I'm not sure what else they could have done. We don't really have items as of yet that would make good loot for end game dungeons, so diamond gear with mega enchantments seems like the best they can do unless they add some unique items that can only be found in The End. I presume eventually they'll add the items needed to re-spawn the dragon though.
AFAIK levitation arrows and potions are not going to be obtainable in survival due to the OPness. Seriously, hit someone with that and they'll probably die from fall damage.
New potion arrows and New the end islands to be disabled on all servers because it's too overpowerd. in End cities has diamond armor enchanted and Diamond sword with IV or V sharpness
I think only Beetroot,Purpur and Chorus fruit, plants on servers to be allowed
Considering most dedicated players will have gear much better than what the End City offers likely before they even fight the Ender Dragon, I really don't think the loot is that bad in terms of balance.

I dunno about the OP diamond gear. I do agree that You pretty much have to have good diamond stuff to go to the end (especially in 1.9), but I don't see how getting more would be a bad/lame thing. I don't know anyone who has kept a world for a long time and has never repaired or made new diamond armor or tools, except if you casually wore different armor or none at all.
I disagree that beetroot seeds are lame. Every food can't be as good as steak. There a 3 really good foods (golden carrots, steak, and pork) out of the 20 or so foods in minecraft. Pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, and cocoa beans aren't that good either, especially cocoa beans. I think that the beetroot seeds are more for "having every food in the game" than for replacing steak.
I actually hope they remove beacons. They are extremely useful and should not be cheap items. And if you can get a beacon from dungeons, what's the point of the wither?
But yeah, the snapshot needs work

I don't know anyone who has kept a world for a long time and has never repaired or made new diamond armor or tools, except if you casually wore different armor or none at all.
The armor and equipment you get isn't that great, and you can make better stuff yourself long before you set foot in the End (or even the Nether should you choose to ignore it). The gear is also slightly sub-par more often than not; I've only seen endgame-worthy armor once (pants with Prot. IV UB I). It's simply redundant way before you get it, it'd be like if netherforts or dungeons had leather armor in them.

The thing is, it's not that beetroots are bad, it's that they're horrible. Wheat outclasses them, and wheat is outclassed by a lot of things.
First, an individual beetroot only restores one hunger point, so even though they have a high hunger/saturation ratio you still need to spend tons of time eating food anyway which nullifies the whole point of a high hunger/saturation ratio.
Second, is that Beetroot Soup isn't even stackable. Hell, it's completely identical to mushroom stew, and mushroom stew is about as easy-to-get as food items go. And Beetroot Soup is the refined form of the most difficult-to-obtain crop in the game.
It's crap. Even melons and cookies are better than it, since at least you get large quantities of them and can stack them. Even Pumpkin Pie is better if you can get a decent farm for its ingredients going.
EDIT: Unbeknownst to me, beetroots also spawn in village farms. This at least explains (but does not excuse) their crappiness.
I actually hope they remove beacons. They are extremely useful and should not be cheap items. And if you can get a beacon from dungeons, what's the point of the wither?

Beacons are made redundant by tons and tons of things earlier on in the game; pretty much everything it can provide has a more portable form that can be obtained earlier on (e.g. food and regeneration potions for regeneration, armor for resistance, Efficiency for haste, etc). Quite far from useful, if only because it comes too late in the game to do anything.
Personally, I'm glad they put it in the End Cities, because that means you don't have to go through the ludicrous grind of summoning and killing the Wither. The less I have to deal with that horribly-designed concept, the better.
I'm not sure what he could have been testing. Maybe it was simply there as placeholder for something that hasn't been added yet? I would assume they'll replace it with something, not sure what the point of those floating ships would be otherwise.

AFAIK, they are trying to rewrite code as they go. While one big lag-fixing update would be great. It would take a while, and the community would whine, a lot. Anyway we'll have to see what full 1.9 brings.

But mobs forgetting that they were attacking you when you hit them should have been fixed before 1.8 even came out. I find it inexcusable.
