I feel like a lot of things you can do with command blocks are pretty pointless. You have vanilla minecraft and then you have mods, things that command blocks do are things for people who essentialy want mods but are too lazy to use them.
Imagine you want to play a map. Would you want to download Forge, then download the mod for the map, then drag it into the mods folder and make sure it works for a map you might not even like? Or would you just like to download the map and try it out? Also not everyone has time to learn a programming language for a map they are creating.

I guess in that respect it's like convenient modding, less flexible but can get the job done. I hope they add a bunch of cool stuff in 1.9.

Mapmaking with command blocks would be a HECK of alot more work than downloading a simple mod!
Features added in 1.8 are fine. The game is actually maturing in a good way. However, although I understand that it takes time to refine the code base, just looking at 1.8's code doesn't impress me. At least it doesn't look like a whole year's work. They are paid full time professionals, and to be honest, they were doing a subpar job for the past few releases. Some heated hatred is truly irritating, but unfortunately I don't feel the urge to argue for them this time

They only had about 6 months of work days split between 3different games, and they managed to rewrite most of the game's core workings. Not to mention they are all hired on freelancers. I don't think many of them were actually professional programmers before being hired on.
Well, microsoft will either make minecraft really good, or really bad...
Microsoft paid 2.5billion for the IP. They are not going to risk anything until they get at least that much in returns. It is the among the most ever paid for a game development studio and IP. So please, get it out of your head that Microsoft is going to kill anything. They are a business, and their pgoal first and foremost is to make money.

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.

Well then that explains a lot. If 5 freelancers have to split attention among 3 different projects, then they are not going to deliver well on this million dollar game. Lets hope microsoft can put more man power into this project.

I think they are doing just fine. I know some others dont share that outlook, but alas, the last thing microsoft needs to do is force on new manpower.

I said good OR bad... It wasn't meant to be negative
Was 1.8 the "Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric" of Minecraft? I think yes. It'll be outstanding if they could fix the lag, but for me (and numerous other players), it's basically unplayable. And for the people who say "1.8 added lots o' stuff!!!", they only added roughly 2 useful blocks, and all the rest are just decoration blocks, 2 new mobs (Eyesore inducing bunnies and the Guardians), bland looking armor stands (that are useful with commands for some reason), and the rest of the update completely consists of a new rendering code, which was actually done for the worse and not for the better in effort of trying to "fix" notch's old coding. Why Notch, why did you have to betray us?

Why is everyone still posting about this? Someone should complain about 1.9 when it comes out and if it's bad, then it'll last a few days and that's it, Minecraft 1.8 literally came out months ago, it's getting old.

I know what it feels like to be rekt. Check out Mineplex, it's a very popular crappy server.
I'm stuck at home , yay!
Oi, do you want to change the world? Yup
Then get off your bottom and see how many things you can do to help the environment.

For how you play the game (if you're even able to play the game), this update is useless.
For how a lot of other people play the game, the new features are actually pretty cool.
Should I proceed to start a thread about the immense uselessness of the 1.5 redstone update, merely because I don't use redstone? No, because I just deal with it and move on. This is a game, people. Surely you won't get so angry over a games update.

Yeah, but you do have to think of the intense lag this update also added for some computers, and its snapshots didn't add a new crappy rendering system until the second to last one! Plus, it made my memory consumption shoot up like Mario or Sonic when they lose a life, only instead of going down, they just keep going up, and up, and up..

The lag should only be temporary. It's already a lot better for me in 1.8.1
So would Sethbling, and everyone who's made awesome 1.8 maps that weren't possible before. A great example is the Five Night's at Freddy's map:
