Nintendo shut down the Pixelmon mod! It's so ridiculous, the mod doesn't even use the title of "Pokemon", it just has low-res models that happen to look like Pokemon! And it's not like the developers are making a profit from it.
This is like what happened with GTA V and it's modding community!
We need to boycott Nintendo, do not buy Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon when they come out!
EDIT: Let's make this the most popular thread to spread the news, and also go sign the petition that the developers started that already has 2000 signatures!
Personally, it's not really the fact that the mod itself has been taken down. I only tried to play with the mod once, and I thought it was okay, although I wasn't really interested in playing Pokemon and Minecraft at the same time.
No, what bothers me is that Nintendo seems to view fan creations as some kind of threat, like they're trying to compete with Nintendo rather than appreciate Nintendo's games and characters. I could understand if this was a clone of Nintendo's game that was made without giving credit to Nintendo. I would still be angry with them if I used that clone, but I could understand why they would do that. But this isn't a clone, this is a fan creation. With similar gameplay, sure, but it's not like it's going to stop people from buying Nintendo's products.

Thing is you don't get it. Nintendo had to shut it down because it was allowing people to just about play pokemon for free. Nintendo is a great company, and even if you get a lot of signatures, they won't do anything. Don't call nintendo jerks. They were just doing what they had to do to stay in control of their IPs. If you want to go ahead, go ahead, but I will not support this. Technically, Pixelmon was in a way breaking copyright.
Hah...because a few children from the Minecraft community who refuse to purchase Ultra Sun and Moon will make a huge difference in the sales.
I understand why you're upset, but please don't be so immature about it. You don't need to try and convince a whole forum to boycott Nintendo (with four exclamation marks) because they rightfully shut down a mod that, as ThisCheckMiner mentioned, was essentially Pokémon for free.

I don't seem to have articulated my point clearly enough.
For one thing, I don't particularly enjoy the Pixelmon mod either. I'm just a little salty because our modding community is being attacked, like GTA's was. By the way, did you see how the Steam reviews for GTA went from "Overwhelmingly positive" to "Overwhelmingly negative" basically overnight?
That's besides the point though. My point is, if the developers of the mod just changed the name of each Pokemon, they should be able to continue to develop it, because without the Pokemon title or Pokemon names, Nintendo has no reason to shut it down, because they can't possibly claim that some amorphous blobs in another video game belong to them.
It's sort of how like the community can recreate songs with minecraft note blocks without someone claiming copyright because the "song" is just a series of notes produced by blocks that happen to sound like a song.
And my final point about boycotting their new games, anything does make in impact guys. Just take for instance the 2000 signatures already on the petition. The voices of the Minecraft community matter.
I'm just trying to share this news with the forums, not really trying to get them to rally. I guess I could have left out the exclamation marks (greencomet).
The way copyright law works, it's all or nothing for Nintendo when protecting their copyrights. Either they take every project that infringes on them down, or hey lose the exclusive copyright if they don't. If they make exceptions for popular projects like Pixelmon, or Pokemon Uranium last year, actual bootleggers can use those in a court case that Nintendo isn't actually properly protecting their copyright. And everyone would be able to use it.
So don't blame Nintendo, they have to take action whether they actually want to or not. Better blame Copyright Law, as it is very outdated and doesn't take any changes over the past decades into account.

I wonder how Sega gets away with it though, considering the massive numbers of fan games and ROM hacks. (Although I suppose technically Nintendo does get fan games from kids on Scratch or Newgrounds...)

We need to boycott Nintendo, do not buy Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon when they come out! You'll have to put me at gunpoint or something. I am WAY hyped (over nothing, I guess)
EDIT: Let's make this the most popular thread to spread the news, and also go sign the petition that the developers started that already has 2000 signatures! Ah, yes. This will become an extremely popular thread which will ultimately lead to a boycott which will kill gaming giant Nintentdo. In all seriousness, this won't make that much of dent in GameFreak's revenue. Let's take Ultra Sun/Moon's price (excuse me for using US dollars) which is forty bucks (minus on cent). Multiply this by two thousand (heck, let's be generous and say three thousand). This equals roughly 119 thousand dollars (excuse me for not having a calculator on hand). That seem like a lot. But if you take the probably, let's say, five million copies they will sell, they'll end up with about 199 million dollars. That's a lot. This is all ignoring sales tax, but I think you get the gist. This is also assuming that none of the boycotters will give up and end up buying the game.
Replies in bold.
You have to remember that the people at Pixelmon took a risk by making the mod; they had known that Nintendo was trigger-happy with defending its copyrights. Instead of hating Nintendo, I think you should be thankful that Nintendo allowed the mod to go as far as it did.
While it is true that copyright laws work in a strange way, Nintendo definitely could have done something other than shutting this project down. For example by giving it official permission to use their intellectual property up to a certain degree. This has been done numerous of times before and usually with great success.
Microsoft owns the right to .NET, a programming framework which is specifically targeted at combining two of their favorite languages (C# & VB) in order to develop applications for the Windows environment. This got some people within the open source community quite excited and Project Mono became a thing. I quote: "Mono is an open source implementation of Microsoft's .NET Framework based on the ECMA standards for C#and the Common Language Runtime.".
And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to shut them down, instead they tolerated its use. At this time Microsoft is even donating to the project!
Just so we're clear here: the Mono project basically allows me to use Microsoft developed features for free. Instead of purchasing a Microsoft Windows server to run IIS (= Microsoft application server, something to run websites on) I can now simply grab Apache (webserver) + Mono + mod_mono for free and get my hands on a free .NET application environment. For context: I actually purchased a license for Microsoft's Visual Studio and right now I'm involved with several projects where I use Visual Studio to develop Mono powered .NET web applications, run on FreeBSD.
And this is just one of the many examples out there. Also noteworthy: there have been several projects which Microsoft did shut down.
Nintendo didn't have to shut this down, that's bollocks. There were plenty of ways around it, but Nintendo chose not to.
What companies like Nintendo forget (which Microsoft did keep in mind in the example above) is that such fan-based projects are also a huge advertisement source, and the company itself doesn't have to invest one single dime into it (why do you think Microsoft decided to sponsor Mono?).
This has nothing to do with copyright or protection of intellectual properties. That's simply the ruse Nintendo is using. That's simply their easy way out. This is all about Nintendo not wanting to take the effort to look into this project and therefor they simply downed the ban hammer. No effort = no invested time = no involved costs. For a company time = money afterall.
I agree with this. There are legal ways around this and come to a compromise, but Nintendo opted to take the shortcut like always and slam the ban hammer down. I am quite furious with a company that I actually paid good money to get products from, only to have my loyalty thrown in my face. They act like we don't care. That we're just a cash cow to be wrung dry of money. I'm not going any further. This is where I draw the line.

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
My only counterargument to this is that Nintendo seems to market towards a casual audience, that is, people who don't want to put a lot of time, money or effort into their games. This might explain that Nintendo wants to get rid of potential competitors that can create games just about as good, because a casual gamer won't really care about any slight differences like story or the number of glitches/bugs that the game has.
Still, Nintendo really is a jerk in these situations. It's like if a kid went up to his father with a crayon drawing and the father threw it in the trash because it "might draw attention away from his own business."
My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.

Let's boycott Sony, because they don't know how to keep their accounts secure
Let's boycott Microsoft, because they can't do anything right, apparently.
Let's boycott Mojang, because 1.9.
Let's boycott Bethesda, because they're trying to add paid mods to their games again.
In fact, let's boycott gaming in general, because chances are, all developers have done something in the past that we wouldn't like.
Boycotts have to exist on a huge scale to be effective, and even then don't guarantee a change. You likely won't convince nearly enough people with a thread like this, and you'll never convince Nintendo.
Nintendo in this case is like a rich old man with a large estate (their IP) where a bunch of kids (makers of fan games) tend to sneak on to play. When Nintendo catches wind of them, they have the choice of either telling them to get off their lawn (shutting down the project), ignoring them, or inviting them to come inside for some snacks (officially supporting them/hiring them). Nintendo often goes with the first choice, but even though we may not like it, it is 100% within their right to do it.
Nintendo is not against fandom. They may not necessarily be supportive of it, but you can find fan art, fiction, videos, and even ROM hacking sites that haven't been touched by Nintendo. However, when it comes to fan games, that is in direct competition with their products. Think back to AM2R; when players of that game see the upcoming Samus Returns, because they've played the fan game, they might now say "I've already played a remake of Metroid 2, so there's no reason for me to play this." The makers of the fan game have unintentionally cut into Nintendo's profits even though they didn't make any money from their game. How much more, then, is one of the most popular mods made for one of the most popular video games going to compete?
Finally, I don't know where people are getting that Nintendo is greedy. They want to make money, sure, and perhaps they are a little greedy, but they are one of the least greedy companies out there. If they were concerned with making as much money as possible, they'd stop making consoles and be turning their most popular series into annual ones that are cheap to produce. However, Nintendo is more concerned with making fun and innovative games.
My only counterargument to this is that Nintendo seems to market towards a casual audience, that is, people who don't want to put a lot of time, money or effort into their games. This might explain that Nintendo wants to get rid of potential competitors that can create games just about as good Pixelmon was no-where as good in comparison to any of today's pokemon games, and that's coming from me, someone who dislikes nintendo, and nintendo isn't taking it down because it's a "competitor", it's because of copyright laws and the fact that the mod itself does use "stolen" data., because a casual gamer won't really care about any slight differences like story or the number of glitches/bugs that the game has.
Still, Nintendo really is a jerk in these situations. It's like if a kid went up to his father with a crayon drawing and the father threw it in the trash because it "might draw attention away from his own business." Except in that situation the kid's drawing would never be distributed globally nor would it escape the families household, meaning it's the same as having Pixelmon NOT uploaded, only used among a group of friends - and not contending with any of the "father's" work. Your comparison didn't work there.
Honestly, I myself am fine with Pixelmon's shutdown. It wasn't a prime mod for me or any of my friends after the first year of playing it. Although I'm sure other's opinions differ, and regardless you can still download the mod for all current versions.

Yeah, it's difficult to make a comparison considering this is dealing with trade of something non-concrete. That's why trash copyright laws exist in the first place.

But why? Nintendo owns the copyrights to Pokemon and they have the right to decide how we can use their property. Apparently, the developers of Pixelmon did not read Pokemon's terms of use, which read:
"5. USER RIGHTS AND RESTRICTIONS. These Terms grant permission to you, in your individual capacity, to use the content of Service made available to you for personal, noncommercial home use only. In no instancemay you: ... (ii) Modify, or create derivative works based on, the content;"
Meaning, you can't do what the developers of Pixelmon did. That was bad. If they had gotten permission from Nintendo first then they can make Pixelmon and maintain it, but it appears they didn't, so that was why it was taken down. End of story. Don't get me wrong, it looked like really cool mod and I've thought about playing it—though it looks like I won't be able to now—but Nintendo had the legal right to the property.

Minecraft 1.VR-Pre1

Minecraft 3D
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.
