There is no logic.
That's like wondering why "dust" transmits power, only sand and gravel obey gravity, people and mobs don't have knees or elbows, or why water/lava only flows 7 blocks.
It's a game- not reality.
They are just trying to make it look like a cake. Without the sprinkles on top, it surely wouldn't look as much like a cake. This leads me to a logical question: why can we not place pumpkin pies in the same way? Is there some kind of cake-ism going on here? Personally, I prefer pie over cake any day.

Agreed, they haven't. No game will ever match reality, or be "logical". It's a game. Each one has a "framework" or "rules" of gameplay that you have to follow. You deal with it and use your imagination to "fill in the blanks" (and MC requires a lot of imagination- "realism" is not one of it's strengths).
MC cake is a direct Portal reference, as illustrated by the achievement. Portal cake had cherries on it (not strawberries)
However, MC cake rather appears to have random sized red spots on it. What are they? Well it is apparent that cows and mooshrooms have a lot of common DNA. Mooshroooms can be milked for mushroom stew directly, but they and cows produced identical milk, and I suspect that milk has high mushroom matter content. When baked, this matter crystallizes in the frosting, and attains the characteristic mooshroom color.

Thanks for bringing a smile to my face. I must admit, with logic like that....I'm okay with no logic in a game.
Once you make a cake in Minecraft, it has white frosting and strawberries on it, everyone knows that.
But why do they appear? none of the ingredients of the cake should form the frosting and strawberries.
And yes i know i'm questioning Minecraft's "Ender" logic, but still, what is the best possible explanation for the mysterious toppings?
The milk had stawberries in it... idk

The developers prefer cake?

Me too. The cake is a lie.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Maybe the devs like cake with strawberry who knows.
