We all know mods are fun, but they're a great way for criminals to spread viruses and steal your private information and mods can harm your game. But mods are inspire by creativity and add fun content to the game, also the community is working on make easier ways to install mods without harming your game.
If you download them from the right place, there's absolutely no danger, all the mods here, on the Minecraft Forum, are safe, no worries, Hakuna Matata.

Yes, the only way a virus can spread is if someone downloaded it
All mods on these forums are completely safe. Any Malware put up for download is taken down, so the mods you get here are 100% safe.
Now, as for how safe the mods are IN-GAME....I know this one mod, Lycanites Mobs Mod....It's fun but it will kill you repeatedly, no matter what gear you get. The mobs are brutal.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
Not only mods, there are also other things that give minecraft that little extra. Try multiplayer. Interacting with other players and playing minigames online is much more fun in my opinion than singleplayer mods.
However if you setup a small server and play mods with your friends, it can also be very very fun! (Actually more fun than playing on those public online servers )
Yeah, tried multi for a while, i got tired of playing with immature players.
Also who voted they can be dangerous? I WANT NAMES!
If there was an infected mod put up here on the MCF there is ususally always a Guinea Pig (sometimes me) that downloads the mod. If it is infected it gets reported quickly and taken down
If you download your mods from the right place, the risk of installing a virus or having your information stolen is reduced to a negligible amount. Both Curse and the Minecraft Forums have checks in place to prevent the user from being harmed by the content they download. Unfortunately the modded minecraft community has been plagued with a swarm of malicious organizations which masquerade as a genuine mod developers. These sites not only harm the user, but the developers as well. Unfortunately these sites tend to get higher google ratings due to how they operate, meaning legitimate content is pushed down in search results. Fortunately there is an awareness movement going on right now called StopModReposts, this movement is working to spread awareness and protect users from these sites. This group has compiled a list of sites which are not legitimate and should never be trusted, unfortunately it is a very long list, and it keeps growing. You can find their list here.
Here are some tips for staying safe while installing mods
Only download mods from trusted sources, minecraftforum.net curseforge.com minecraftforge.net and to a smaller extent planetminecraft.com. Links to other download locations are usually safe, as long as they are listed on one of those sites. For example, I store a list of all of my mod downloads on my own website, darkhax.net I link to this site from all of my mod posts.
Avoid mod installers. If you download a mod and it is an executable (.exe) file, you can almost guarantee it is malicious. There are a few exe programs which can be trusted, such as the FTBModLauncher, and the ATLauncher. Curse has also launched a new client. these tools are specifically designed for managining mods, and come from reputable sources.
I would like to add to the excellent information by stating that if you are indeed worried about contracting a virus and/or malware then do yourself a favor and get a decent virus scanner and malware scanner. You've several options for a virus scanner and Malwarebytes is probably the best in malware detection available currently. Set them up to scan all incoming/downloaded files and to update daily and you will be safe. Most will even scan zip/rar files before you even unpack them.
I'd also like to suggest, if it is still possible, renaming this thread to "Are mods safe or dangerous to download?" I came in thinking it was going to be a debate over if mods add or subtract from gameplay.
As long as you download from Minecraft Forum, it's all safe, I've never downloaded a single virus from here, and I've neither seen anyone downloading one, if you stay in Minecraft Forums you'll stay safe
If you get one from Minecraft (Forge) Forum, it's 95% safe, and the moderators make sure of that. It's VERY doubtful you'll get a virus (unless you mess up on the Adf.ly/Adfoc.us/any other revenue site, or snag one before the moderators see it); and after 100+ mods I've used, I should know. If you REALLY, absolutely assuredly positively definitely, need some guidelines, here are some:
DON'T go for fresh mods. If a mod is ~2 days or younger and has no comments, avoid it.
DON'T download one from a third-party site.
DON'T bother with Birthday Cow or Creeper Steve mods and stick with things that actually provide aesthetic or practical purpose; E.G. IC2, Simple Recipes, or MrCrayfish's furniture. It may not save you from viruses, but it will save you from some lag.
DO try mods with a large following. They are as safe as a seatbelt.
DO try mods from people who have multiple mods. Remember: people gain reputation.
On certain websites their differnt mods or for differnt versions so I suggest Skydaz installers
Skydaz is a third party site with a bad reputation. The mods uploaded to that site are done so without the developers knowledge, or consent. Mods downloaded from that site are not official or supported by the author, and may have been tampered with. A third party site should never be trusted.

I would use minecraft forums, but I'm new to PC edition so I don't know how to install mods
if you download the mod from the mc forums then the only danger you face is a corrupted world so there really isn't anything to worry about. however there is always the possibility that you download something bad so just scan your computer after download and you should be good. If you want the beyaond safe route use mod packs such as ftb, tekkit and the at launcher to do your modding.

If you get a virus from downloading one, then that's on you for choosing a suspicious site to download from, all of which are absurdly easy to spot.
Sites like MinecraftForum and PlanetMinecraft are really the only good sources for legitimate mods, as well as well-designed sites created specifically for a mod, like Pixelmonmod.com.
Sites like Minecraftdl.com, where they claim that every mod there is available for all versions of Minecraft and have popular mods uploaded by someone other than the person who actually created the mod, are obviously fake and shouldn't be trusted.
It all comes down to how much common sense you have.

They are fun and safe if your not stupid. You only get mods or anything for that matter from the official source. Then you won't get viruses
I guess theres the possibility of danger if more installation processes involve opening .jar and .exe files
