Is there a faster way to mine obsidian? It takes forever to do it with the diamond pick ax. I tried tnt ( noobish move I know ) And didn't nothing. Is there no other way to mine it faster other than efficiency? Thank You for any input.
So you tried to T-n-T obsidian too?!? It's not a noob mistake...it's genius! Perfectly reasonable. And of course I didn't let the fact that it utterly failed dissuade me. Try and try (and fail) again, that's my mot.... OH, who am I kidding.
Yes, it was a noob mistake, we all did it.
We're not proud of it...
Point and laugh children!
As far as I know, diamond pickaxe with efficiency is the fastest way.

My noob mistake was I didn't realise you could scroll down through the different tools and etc.
So for the first few days I couldn't work out how to mine gold and etc.
I never tried mining obsidian with TNT though I learnt from my friends before I had the game that nothing!! But Diamond a pick axe breaks obsidian.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.
When I first started playing MC, the 'tool tip', or whatever they're called, said you needed to use a diamond pick. . . so I did.
OP, efficiency is you're best bet.
Also, slightly off topic, I made a 'box' out of Obsidian on Creative and filled it with TNT. . . It shows the 'bang' outside of the Obsidian. Wierd. . . I also took damage when standing next to it. The damage went through the Obsidian!

You didn't?!? Well, it was a learning experience. I remember that tool-tip about the diamond pickaxe: It didn't say you couldn't blow up obsidian...
Thanks for the heads-up about damage through obsidian!
Seriously, a diamond pickaxe with Efficiency IV doesn't take that long. I think it is the fastest way when you consider everything. Picking the lava up in buckets is fast; but if you actually want obsidian as a drop, you still have to make a mold for your structure and turn the lava into obsidian in place. However, molding it is a great alternative to making a portal before you find diamonds in your world.
If you pour water on the lava lake and leave the water in place, you can keep mining layers of lava without worrying about falling into the layer underneath. The water just keeps turning the next layer underneath into obsidian. The only thing you have to be careful of is not to go beyond where the water will stop flowing naturally (8 blocks away from where you pour it). Also, you want to be careful not to allow yourself to drown.
If you're just looking to get rid of a lava lake and really don't care about not getting the obsidian or lava as a resource, then dropping sand or gravel into it is the fastest way to do that.

Why did I never think of doing that. . . . I used to check under each block before mining it. DUH!
Also, can you make a flat portal. . . one that is lying down?

Corrected my spelling error. Thanks (I'm such a bad typist!). Hmmm on the portal. Never tried it. How would Steve lie in it though to enter the Nether?

No problem. I thought for a minute you might have felt sorry for the blocks . . .
Maybe he would fall through it, into the Nether. . . .then be stuck there. Hmmm.
The enchantment "Efficiency" on a Diamond Pickaxe. It only takes a fraction of the normal time to mine blocks (varies throughout levels). This is a good investment of stockpiled Experience.
Design dirt molds around where you want Obsidian. Find a large lava source nearby. Build a Storage Minecart system and preferably normal Minecart rail between both locations. Fill the Storage Minecarts with empty buckets and clean out your entire inventory. Collect the lava in the buckets, put them back in the Minecart w/Chests, push them, ride back to the mold area, and begin work. This is a good investment of stockpiled Iron and Rails, and it is much quicker than the first method.
I disagree that the lava bucket and mold method is quicker that straight mining with a diamond+efficiency pickaxe. First, you have mine all that iron to make the buckets, Then, in MCXBLA, buckets currently don't stack, so to get a decent amount of obsidian to your build site requires either many, many trips to the lava source or effectively building a railroad and a bunch of minecarts with chests. Conversely, mining through water with a pickaxe means you can just go to it. By mining through water, you don't have to worry about falling in lava and you get to collect every single block that drops from your pickaxe. You can stack them to 64 in a single inventory slot. So, from an average lava lake you can collect ample obsidian to build a castle with just one trip with 1 pickaxe and a bucket of water. Then, when you start to build, you can just go ahead and do it normal-like. Much quicker overall. The only time I'll resort to the mold method for obsidian is to build a portal in a world where I haven't found any diamonds yet.
BTW, mining through water (or with water right beside the block to be mined) ensures that diamonds and other precious ores never fall into lava even if lava is right below them. Works every time. I never leave home without a bucket of water; and haven't lost a diamond in lava in ages.
An efficiency III pick actually breaks it in 4.5 seconds, according to the wiki. Very tolerable indeed.
Efficiency IV (with Unbreaking III) is the best pickaxe enchantment I've gotten so far for obsidian, but I just saw on the Wiki that Efficiency V does the job in 2.5 seconds. I don't see how a Fortune enchantment would do much - it doesn't give you multiple drops of obsidian does it?

I've never received an efficiency enchant higher then III. I'd love a V though. 2.5 seconds to mine a block of Obsidian... Yes please! Fortune only works for blocks that drop an item different from the block. ie; Gravel, Lapis Lazuli, redstone, glowstone ect. I think Phoenix just got his enchants mixed up. I do it all the time. lol
Are sick and tired of mining obsidian for hours and hours collecting just a few stacks? Are you arguing over what the best pic is to mine this obsidian of yours? Introducing an automatic way to farm the resource with dan's design. Using withers, the obsidian is generated from the end is harvested AUTOMATICLY. By the end of that day, you'll have more obsidian than you do dirt! Cheers!
seriously though, anything other than the Diamond pickaxe will take you ~4 minutes. And, you don't get the block after it breaks.

My brain failed and somehow mixed Fortune and Efficiency. ._.
And I went by using my phone as a timer, so go figure....

I guess it will take only around 2 seconds, not a long time if you ask me.
We do not have beacons... yet
