I use to have my sword as #1, but then I thought one day.. "Wait, this is Minecraft... not Swordcraft!", and all I have to do is go over left once to get to my sword.. so

1. Map 2. Pick Axe 3. Sword 4. Food 5. Torches 6-9. Empty and usually used for blocks whenever I need them. Also occasionally I use one of those slots for bows.
What does everyone's hotbar look like? I'm curious. I usually always keep mine the same, habit. We each get 9 slots I believe.
Hotbar slots :
1) sword
2) shovel
3) axe
4) pick axe
5) food
6)
7)
8)
9)
i try to keep the last 4 open for building materials. But there's alway full. And I rarely ever carry a bow.
I generally keep mine pretty organized depending on what I'm doing at any given time.
My basic hotbar layout is as follows tho:
1. Pickaxe, 2. Cobblestone / Dirt, 3. Torches , 4. Other tool, 5. Map, 6. Food, 7. Bucket, 8. Bow, 9. Sword

1) Sword - looting and smite
2) Sword - sharpness... sometimes + knockback
3) pickaxe (all-purpose digging)
4) torches
5) shovel
6) dirt
7) cobble (alternately water bucket)
8) food (alternately pickaxe w/silk touch or fortune)
9) bow
Regular inventory includes:
Flint/steel
golden apple and/or potions
Enderpearls
wood
coal
2 stacks of arrows (or only a few if infinity enchant on bow)
additional stack of torches
redstone blocks
enderchest
gravel
