I've done some searching but not found an answer to this problem. This looked like the best place to ask about it.
I tried downloading a few custom maps and they are all installed properly and can be run in the game. However, they do not fully function as if (and this is my speculation) command blocks or scripting is not running.
The game starts as normal but then does not behave like walkthroughs on youtube. After the introduction text, other characters do not interact (no text) and the elevator cannot be entered, which is the means to leave the initial location.
After some searching, I thought perhaps command blocks were not enabled. But the solutions offered apply to servers and not to clients running their own maps (in server.properties enable command blocks). Another bit of help mentioned cheats had to be enabled on private games but afaik chears are enabled as the game starts out by saying so.
Any insight as to why maps wouldn't work properly would be much appreciated.
I'm new to minecraft but eventually found the answer. I was under the impression that maps from previous versions would work correctly on current stable releases but that is not the case. The example above (Asleep 2) was created for 1.10.1 but my current version 1.12.2 cannot run it. Eventually I found how to run previous versions of minecraft and I can now successfully run Asleep 2 using 1.10.1. Later snapshot builds didn't work either and introduced a number of bugs.
The next problem is how to set up Microsoft Code Connection with the full version instead of the education edition. Problem one is 1.12.2 doesn't even recognize the "/connect" command so it's not as easy as Microsoft's (old) video suggests. But that's for another post if I can't figure it out

A specific example is Asleep2 ( http://www.minecraftmaps.com/adventure-maps/asleep-2 )

Thanks for your answer Julian.
