It's about shapes and style rather than amount/usage of colours. The shapes and styles Peyton and Sheep used aren't simple at all.
Well the way I'm intending my pack for the challenge is a simple rpg styled pack. It's really hard to get the right theme and feel with just random colours and shapes, no other way I can do the challenge like that...
Still, I'm going to tweak a couple of my more detailed textures to make them a little more simple and stylised. Hard to come from more detailed textures straight down to simple. Things always look too bland for me without a smattering of detail.
Playing around with Fuzzlechan's palette. Not sure yet if I'm going to be keeping these.
The grass and dirt are great but the log looks a bit plain in my opinion. Could do with a dash of pizzazz.
EDIT:
Sorry Malcolm, didn't see the new page!
Your textures look a bit too gritty at the moment. I think you should use some cleaner and larger blocks of colour for your highlights (fewer single pixel lines or single pixel width dots used on highlights), I feel it would improve the aesthetic a bit. Nice colour choices so far though!
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try that, I had the feeling they weren't quite simple enough.
Really enjoying using that palette, it's has some interesting blends. I wish my own colour choices weren't so linear, gotta practise making palettes more.
It's not that it wasn't simple enough exactly, it's more that it would make it look cleaner which would imo improve the look. The shading looks a bit messier than it could be since it's a more complex style but with fewer colours.
I quit, or at least I quit with Speedy's palette. 'Twas a hard palette.
You should try converting to his updated palette, has more colours but looks like it has the same colour scheme. I really liked the colour combos you were picking!
I updated a few textures, I'm going to clean up the planks a tad too in a little bit. I'm going to add little clumps of detail (such as the ores) throughout otherwise rather flat textures, I think it makes it look pretty interesting but still simple enough imo. Let me know if you guys think it's pushing it too much and I'll flatten them out.
Huh, I might participate in this if I can pull myself together and get some textures going. I quite like the selection of palettes- it's nice to see some of the 16 colour ones from the PixelJoint comp reposted here.
@Alvoria, Good start. All I can suggest is to add some bigger shapes into the three blocks at the bottom, like what you've done with the stone.
Those are supposed to be the smooth variants of andesite, diorite, and granite respectively. If I add shapes to them they'll literally just be their rough counterparts. I was thinking of going with a bevel like the smooth slab... but I felt like that had been done to death. I don't know, is it something that people want?
Yup! Palette is perfectly fine. Also, nice Lyra.

That looks MUCH nicer imo! Way cleaner looking.
I'll make alternates of the ores just in case too, I'll see what others have to say as well before I decide which is okay to keep...
Some ideas:
Thoughts?
(Peyton's palette)
Don't know if I'm going to officially enter, but here's a palette:
@Steelfeathers noticed you and I had the exact same planks, weird coincidence o:
Well not exactly the same, but you're right, they are very similar. Drat, I didn't notice that. Hmm...I'll have to see what else i can do with them.
You can keep them if you want, it's totally fine. Not accusing you of stealing or anything, I know you wouldn't do that
Everything I've done so far. I think I've met all the requirements, so...
Like it so far! I do wish the image was bigger, though. It's hard to see it at that size.
@CheezLordy: Slow down! You're going to be done waaay before the rest of us.
New stuff from last night:
Some sand, grass, and birch trees
Also, I can't decide as to which texture to use for the oak log. I like the one with more contrast, but is it too much?
Nice! I like the one with more contrast as well, and no, I don't think it's too much.
Heh, most of my textures are just recoloured, so I'm sure you guys can do a better job than I have

I'm participating, woo!
Palette:
And here's what I've got so far, using Cooldude's palette:
Buuuut I might end up starting all over. Which do you all think would be better - style A (more detailed) or style B (less detailed)?
These look a lot better, great improvements. The grass is fine, looks pretty good imo
The first is pillow-shaded in places (pixel art no-no), the second could use more variety, but I prefer it over the first.
Here's a preview of my entry! All the Stone stuff you can handle!
I'm using Minihilly's Palette. And in accordance with the rules, here's the palette I made:
And yes, it IS designed to be as girly as possible. Enjoy.
That looks really good. And yea, an improvement over what you had before. So much stiff competition this time. I LOVE IT!
