Forge for 1.8 doesn't support OBJ models yet, but it may in future. It does support B3D models now, though; so you may be able to use that format instead.

I know very little about models/rendering, so I can't help you all that much; but Forge itself has an example of how to use B3D models here.

I can't figure out how to render the B3D models in Forge 1.8? (The rendering of .obj models in 1.7.10 was pretty easy)
Does anybody know how the new mechanic is working? Or is there another way to create models which not only constist out of Quads and render them in minecraft? (I don't think I'm the only person interested in that)
Thanks man you are PRO (Ok every body how saw your videos knows that :))
I would never though about that ... but there is still a little problem, the game crashes when ever it tries to parse my model (The same as I used in 1.7.10):
com.techmage.magetech.utility.costummodel.ModelFormatException: Error parsing entry ('o essenceNode_Torus.001', line 4) in file 'magetech:models/block/node_essence.obj' - Incorrect format
I've tried to create a simple cube and use that but again ... it crashes
Hope you can help me to fix that too
EDIT: Ok I have fixed that problem, it was caused by some autogenerated text at the beginnen of the .obj file, now the model is working when the block is placed in the world:
But I've found the next problem allready, it seems that the IItemRenderer isn't in use any more, so I can't render the block in my hand and in the inventory like that, I don't know to much about rendering so maybe you can help me out with that again?
Did some digging too ... they commented the part out where is was called: ForgeHooksClient
Answer to his comment Removed, Modders let me know if this is needed anymore.
Yes I need it ;(
Really hope you can figure something out (Good Luck) ... and you are so friendly to share your solution

Heh I had the exact same reaction on that comment. I mean how would you even do stuff like this without IItemRenderer.
Oh yeah ofcourse I will share the fix or api or what ever it is in a new thread! I'll post a comment over here for you because I have a feeling that you will not wana miss it.
Hello everyboy,
I'm currently updating my mod to Minecraft 1.8 and now I found a littly problem ... is there any way to render a .obj model in the game?
The old ICostumModel and the AdvancedModelLoader aren't in anymore, or at least I can't find them ;(
And I can't just use the normal models because they can only render boxes, but how you can see in the picture below thats nod good enough for me
Hope you guys can help me fix that problem, or I have to lower the quality of my model a bit down ;(

Yeah I think I can export my model as B3D model with blender ... (There is an addon I believe)
Do you know how to render the B3D Model using MinecraftForge or need I to figure that out on my own? ;(

You can copy the obj rendering/loading code from 1.7 it works fine. Here is an example.
Not doing mc modding that much anymore because I am making a full blown game that does not have limitations that mc has. (rip Magiology for now)
I may come back if MC fixes it's rendering pipeline.

Here my ItemNodeEssenceRenderer if you wanna take a look at it
And my ClientProxy if you wanna see how my binding looks like

Haha thanks man! And yes I had the exact same error! XD
Oh yeah the item render in hand. I am reverse engineering some forge events and hopefully I will revive the IItemRenderer!
