But yea, would you recommend a specific requirement to run this overhaul at a point that its not a lag fest and can be considered "fun"?
Yeah, that's just weird man. I'd check out your 1.5.2 vanilla install and see how that runs, as I think a number of people report BTW runs better than it due to some of the optimizations I've made. The one exception might be a bit of stutter on chunk generation due to how I create strata, but that doesn't sound like what you're dealing with.
the whole reason the mod was called this was because the dev was mad that one update was mainly about wolves and he decided to make a mod of how much more they could do insted of wolves

Yea but that was on my old laptop which and an AMD e300 processor clocked at a pathetic 1.3~ gHz with a Raedon 4 something graphics built in, my new laptop has an i7-4720HQ clocked around 2.3~2.6 gHz with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M Graphics card. So going by the massive jump in power and tech, it would be reasonable that BTW SHOULD run better on this computer, correct? I ran a modded setup in 1.7.10 with about 100 or so mods, granted I was on a custom world type, but I was getting about 50-80 FPS there, with no lag (that was noticable). I'll have to go back and re-download 1.5 on this computer and try to set up a BTW enviroment and let you know how it runs. Hopefully I won't have to seek shelter inside a skeleton again XD
This was back on my old laptop, I gave the specs of my old and new one in a reply to Flowerchild, but I can only assume that it would run much better on this computer, seeing as its processor isn't made from leftover potatoes XD
About the mid game slump. I never liked how the crucible was a
loss-less system as well as the crucible itself never wears out. And
nothing really that you construct will run out either. I'm not a huge
fan of things lasting forever without any big drawback (Which is why I
strongly facepalm the new Mending enchant coming to vanilla).
Toad
at one point, buildcraft had users able to create giant redstone engine
powerplants which were free infinite power with no more user work. But
buildcraft went and removed that so that you still needed things like
coal or oil, which take work from users to get more of.
Even IC2
recently has been moving towards users needing to do upkeep with its new
Windmill/water wheel blade tiers. Where low tier lasts 3 hours, high
tier can last 7 irl days worth of play. I hope they find ways to add it
to more like the solars.
I do find those make things more fun.
The busy work and maintaining and hording limited resources. With a
loss-less crucible you don't need a mob trap at all if your good at not
dying. And theres no more choice risk, like if I make this sword, I'll
still get it all back any time to turn it into a hoe. As it is, to me
its a heres everything infinite durability so long as you don't die
adventurer. Not a here, go make a mod trap.
And well a lot of the mid game things your expected to do seem gigantic
compared to what was asked of you before. But you get along well enough
without doing them. So much so that I don't do them : P .
the mending enchantment only works when you're getting xp orbs, and it's also only found in dungeons
You get exp orbs in vanilla doing nearly anything. Not to mention the monster exp from ender farms which quite a few servers I've been on have a publicly accessible one. So I don't consider it a big drawback.
If I got say mending the first thing I'd put it on is a fortune diamond pickaxe. Since I'd only use that to mine ore that fortune works on. Well those drop exp orbs.

also, i think the mending enchantment is mainly intended for the elytra, which is an end game item
Isn't the damage that mini-slimes do a bit absurd? I mean, half a heart seems good on paper, but the fact that they do damage on contact without causing a knockback leads to rapid loss of health, and as far as raw damage per second they seem to do far more than any other mob. Also, is it me, or do their corpses seem to cause damage during the death animation?
I'm not entirely certain from your description as it's a bit vague, but it doesn't sound exactly right either. Install directions can be found in the readme within the download for the mod, with the one caveat that the new launcher Mojang released requires an additional step now:

They might pack a punch if compared with zombies or skeletons, but they're biome-specific like jungle spiders - they're there to protect resources you want. But even then, individual small slimes aren't thaaaat dangerous... (unlike a whole blob of slimes, but then you need strategy when splitting them)
Just out of curiosity, what resources do they protect?
Set up next to a swamp biome and see for yourself
The little something something hidden in somewhere aside, a there is a certain plant only grows naturally in swamps.
Also consider the water a resource. A large expanse of shallow water can prove quite useful when you settle in an area...

Ayy Chuffy,
Redstone uses the same spawning mechanics as vanilla so I don't know why you would be having trouble finding it.
You just need to get down into the deepest layer of strata.
Stratification levels are -
Medium stratification starts at Y = 50 and Dark Strata starts at Y = 26
Hey Vioki its actually your latest vids that inspired me to start again, but I cant get down that deep, I hit dark strata and no more mining - I presume I need diamond pick for the dark stuff? this is my issue - Do i just need to find a cave system that goes down that deep? if so that could be my issue
Yup, that's the idea there. Your first diamonds will almost inevitably come from cave exploration.
What I tend to do is dig down to the top of that impenetrable layer, say through the basement in my house as a mine shaft or stairwell, then dig along the top of it in one direction, listening for cave sounds like mobs and such as I go, and heading off in that direction when I hear them.
It rarely takes me very long using that technique to find a cave system that goes into the bottom strata, and many times my stairwell or shaft ends up intersecting a cave system like that before I even get down that deep.

There is also an interesting surface feature to look for.
Granted not every deep cave will have one of these, and I'm fairly certain not every one of these features will ring true.
However every time I've explored one of these I've always made it into the deepest strata.
If you see a number of cave entrances in close proximity, you're above a large and complex cave system that'll hit the diamond layer.

Sorry for making another post commenting having trouble installing the mod, but I'm having that exact problem right now.
I'm on a Mac, and I've followed every step that the .txt file in the downloaded folder for BTW provides. However, whenever I start Minecraft, the client still tries to update the .jar folder, and I end up with a new vanilla .jar. I've created a separate directory for the modded 1.5.2 folder (titled BetterThanWolves) and changed the name of the .jar and the contents of the .json file (as well it's name) to match that of the directory, as well as deleted the meta-inf file, but I'm still coming up with this problem.

You realized that the minecraft 1.9.4 uses the same sond of Wolf Howling than BTW?
Not surprising as what I am using is just an previously unused vanilla sound
