I'm having trouble getting Optifine to work on my machine. I updated minecraft last week (to 1.10.2), after not using it since like 1.9. I use magic launcher, so I went to Setup -> Mods -> Add, and selected OptiFine (1.10.2_HD_U_c3), and disabled the old version.
When I load minecraft,it doesn't see that Optifine is enabled (the only thing that I see is "/${version_type}" appears next to the version in the bottom left corner). I can get it to work by installing the .jar, and launching the game from the official launcher (switching the profile to the Optifine version).
Anyone have any ideas? I'm sure there is a simple step that I've overlooked, but I can't figure out what it is.

I'm on Win 10 (x64), if that matters.
Double-click the OptiFine JAR, select Extract, save the MOD file and use the MOD file with Magic Launcher.
I want to let people know that optifine, at least when I wen to download it, is not safe. When I go to Optifine.net and go to downloads, it sends me to its adf.ly link, but when I press skip ad, it opens a new tab with the page in the image below. This page will not let you change tabs, or close your browser, or navigate from your browser without use of alt+tab to get back to your desktop and closing its process/task using task manager.
The optifine download page takes me to a page that takes me to another optifine download page that takes me back to the original download page. It's a great big circle with no actual download of anything, just one annoying adfly page after another.
How on earth do I ever download optifine?
Scratch that. I finally found the download link VERY well hidden among the advertising images.
Actually, I looked into this a bit further with jd-gui today, and I think you are mistaken about where Minecraft gets its max texture size number from. Optifine for 1.10.2 calls bcx.B() from Minecraft's code, which does not query OpenGL's GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE. Instead, it loops starting at 16384 and shifts right each iteration, checking to see if it can successfully create a square OpenGL texture of that size in each dimension.
It looks like Minecraft's code also uses bcx.B() when setting up the texture atlas, so if a mod somehow changed that method to start the loop at 32768 instead (I hope that's possible), it might also allow texture atlases bigger than 16384x16384 on video cards that support them (e.g. gtx 1070 and 1080; idk whether the gtx 1060 also supports the higher gl_max_texture_size)

I just loaded up the same world in the C2 version of OptiFine and ran the same test. The falling sand (and anvil) is now always visible. So yeah, something went wrong between C2 and C3.
Have a question...
the Changelog for the last 1.10.2 Version says it works with Forge 2073 ... do i understand that right that this is the highest Version it works?
Because i have an Modpack with Forge 2088 and it crashes when i try to put Optifine in it..
Thats sad....because my PC works better with Optifine and i really like the Clean Water

Sky box is working if shader is of or internal. Shaders overwrite the sky with there own skies.
Skybox texture have to be in asset/minecraft/mcpatcher/sky/world0

Coming soon:

Yes, we know that adf.ly is full of malware. How does that related to optifine?
That worked. Thank you for the help!
Go into chrome webstore and download an ad-blocker extension
Holy moly! It could crash my data? Better be careful...
Anyways, on optifine.net, the mirror links should be fine. I use them since I've donated for the cape rather than using adf.ly's sketchy ad services.

adfocus could be a better alternative. I know files.minecraftforge.net uses it.

This is correct, the gtx 1080 should support 32768: http://opengl.gpuinfo.org/gl_generatereport.php?reportID=1458
The gtx 1060 should also support 32k textures: http://opengl.gpuinfo.org/gl_generatereport.php?reportID=1407
The MC check is starting from 16384 which is too low. It will be increased in the next OptiFine version.
Same virus incubator.
Fixed in next preview C4.
